Intriger og forviklinger udfoldes i fuldt flor i komedien Maskerade af Ludvig Holberg. Handlingen er omtrent som følger: Leander og Leonora skal giftes, det har deres forældre besluttet, men de to har aldrig set hinanden før. En aften mødes de tilfældigt til en Maskerade, og de bliver forelsket i hinanden. Men da de aldrig har set hinanden før, ved de ikke, hvem den anden er, så for at fastholde deres kærlighed, og ikke risikere at blive gift med den person, som deres forældre har bestemt, beslutter de sig for at stikke af sammen. Og således er vejen banet for adskillige genvordigheder for såvel Leander og Leonora, som for deres fædre – kan det mon ende lykkeligt…?Hans Peter Andersen har i denne udgave opdateret sproget, uden at gå på kompromis med Holbergs fantastiske komedie.

Komedien handler om den unge Rasmus Berg, der efter nogle års studier i København vender tilbage til sin fødeegn, nu som den lærde og belæste Erasmus Montanus. Han er arrogant og nedladende over for alle. For fin til at have en bonde som bror. Han skaber uro og snakken i den lille landsby. Folk mener at han spreder falsk lærdom, fordi han mener, at jorden er rund.

Barselstuen er en klassisk komedie af Ludvig Holberg, der gør grin med datidens mode med kvinder på barselvisitter. Handlingen i Barselstuen foregår omkring manden Corfitz på dagen, hvor hans kone holder barselstue for alle byens kvinder, der på tur kommer forbi for at gøre visit og sladre om de andre kvinder. Corfitz på 70 år er bange for, at hans meget unge hustru har gjort ham hanrej, og at han ikke er far til deres nyfødte datter. Gennem hans tjener og kvindernes sladder bliver han bekræftet heri, og han gør klar til at konfrontere sin kone. Men han spilles naturligvis et puds (eller flere) af den person, som han har mistænkt for at have forført konen. I denne version af Barselstuen er stavelsen moderniseret nænsomt af Victoria Jensen, hvor enkelte ord også er ændret for at gøre historien lettere tilgængelig for læseren. For at bevare Ludvig Holbergs elegante sprog og humor fra gamle dage er sætningsopbygninger og formuleringer overordnet bevaret, så det følger den oprindelige udgave.

Hovedpersonerne er to Brødre, af hvilke den ene er overtroisk, den anden vantro. Da imidlertid en Ven forsøger at helbrede begges Fejl, udarter den enes Overtro til Vantro og den andens Vantro til Overtro. Komedien viser altsaa, at enhver Fejl bestaar deri, at man løber for langt (omne vitium in præcipiti stare), og at Reformiver driver sig selv sa vidt, at vi glider over i den anden Yderlighed. Denne Komedie er dog morsommere at læse end at se.

Peder Paars udkom i fire dele 1719-20. Med dette værk, der suverænt spiller på et bredt felt af intertekstuelle referencer, slog Holberg porten op for en ny fiktionsdigtning i dansk litteratur. Som sådan har Peder Paars dog en forløber i Povl Pedersens Kærligheds Ændrings og Undrings Spejl forestillet udi den spanske Herremand Don Pedro af Granada hans Liv og Levneds Historie, der formentlig er digtet allerede i 1690'erne, men først vides trykt 1724, altså efter Holberg. Hvor forskellige de to værker end er, er de fælles om at gå bag om 1600-tallets renæssancebevægelse ved stofligt at genbruge en ældre folkelig fantasidigtning og formelt at parodiere den kunststil, det havde været renæssancens og barokkens ambition at skabe. 1700-tallets tidlige fiktionsdigtning simulerer således ikke at skildre en virkelighed, men har karakter af leg.Som model for sin helt Peder Paars brugte Holberg Cervantes' Don Quixote, fantasten, der er for optaget af at posere som ridder til at se den tarvelige virkelighed, han lever i. Som Don Quixote har sin følgesvend – og kontrast – i realisten Sancho Panza, har Paars som væbner fået den snusfornuftigt bondske Peer Ruus, der kommenterer sin herres tåbeligheder. Lewis Holberg, the author of the Narrative of Niels Klim, was the most eminent writer among the Danes in the eighteenth century. His works show a surprising versatility of genius, comprising Histories and Treatises on Jurisprudence, together with Satires and Comedies. He was by birth a Norwegian, but was educated at the University at Copenhagen in Denmark. Soon after receiving a theological degree from that Institution, he visited Holland and England, and resided about two years at Oxford. Shortly after his return he published an "Introduction to European History," and an "Appendix to the Universal History," in which he gives an account of contemporaneous affairs in the principal governments of the world. His historical labors were interrupted by a royal appointment to a professorship in the University. This office he enjoyed for five years, and then went abroad. In his Autobiography he has given an interesting account of his travels, both at this time and subsequently, and has described men and manners in a way highly entertaining, and generally just. He visited most of the cities of Southern Europe, abiding some time in each. He was well received by men of letters, and made many valuable acquaintance, wherever he went. After remaining one whole winter at Rome, and accomplishing the object of his mission, he returned to Copenhagen. His income was now small, and for two years he was oppressed with great pecuniary difficulties. It was during this period that he published in the Danish language, his "Introduction to the Law of Nature and of Nations." In this treatise, Holberg aimed rather to apply the principles of Natural Law to the Laws and Constitutions of Norway and Denmark, than elaborately to discuss the principles themselves. The work was coldly received at its first appearance, but, after ten or twelve years began to excite public attention, and passed through several editions.
