This devotional book was originally written for the Mission team from Sycamore Tree Church's first mission trip. But the reason you see that number so often is the frequency it gets used in the Bible. It rained on Noah for forty days. The spies scouted the territory in forty days which caused the people of Israel to wander in the desert forty years after they didn't trust God to lead them in safely. Jesus wandered in the wilderness for forty days after His baptism as He faced His humanity and learned that even in His human state He could defeat the enemy. Plus, check out Elijah, Moses and Jonah for even more forty day references.Since the very early days of Christendom the church has set aside the forty days before Holy Week as Lent. It begins Ash Wednesday and either goes through Easter, omitting the six Sundays, or the season is counted from Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday. Either way it's forty days to honor the days Jesus spent in the wilderness and forty days to ensure our hearts are prepared to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.So, whether you use this discussion guide as preparation for the holiest of days or simply to get a bit closer to your Heavenly Father, I pray you it helps you find your way into the abundance Christ promised.

Early in the Spring of 2015, I began to think about the people I know who've started their relationship with Christ as well as my own walk with Christ during those first several years. And as I did, I realized there are a few basic things we need to know as we begin this new life with Jesus. Our enemy, the devil, prowls around like a lion. (1 Peter 5:8) All he wants to do is steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). And much like the pattern we find in the wild, the ancient serpent will stalk the youngest of the flock because they're the easiest target. So I'm writing these short readings to encourage new Christians during the most vulnerable part of their journey. I want to remind new followers of the "Way" that the Christian life is best lived in community with others who are striving to follow Jesus. One of our first responsibilities as a new Christian is to spend as much time as possible with others who are being real with their faith. Just as a soldier would never go into battle alone and unarmed, we must remember that though our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12), it's still a battle. It's important to make sure we have other soldiers around us and we are armed with the Sword of the Spirit. (Ephesians 6:17 & Hebrews 4:12) One thing that the enemy will try to do is make you doubt your salvation. The last thing he needs is one more person confident in their relationship with Jesus Christ. As you read through these short devotions hold on to this truth: Salvation was yours the moment you acknowledged your need for a Savior (Romans 3:10-12), repented of your sins (Acts 3:19) and confessed Jesus Christ as your Lord. (Romans 10:9-10) Hopefully, you'll find other truths to hang on to as you move through the pages of this book. So hold on to what you have (Revelation 3:11), hang tight with your "platoon" (Hebrews 10:24-25) and use the Sword (Hebrews 4:12 & Ephesians 6:17) you'll find in the following pages for your weapon as the words that accompany the Scripture give you encouragement to stay the course.

Every year the world celebrates Christmas as if it's our birthday. These devotions for every day of Advent our designed to help those who want to grow closer to Christ celebrate the season remembering the true reason from Christmas.

This Bible study has been designed to remind us why we recognize the six weeks before Holy Week as Lent. Between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday there are 40 days--the same number of days that the Israelites scouted in the Promised Land, the same number of years the Israelites wandered in the desert and the same number of days that Jesus spent in the wilderness/desert after His baptism. We can use this time to reflect on all that God has done for us. Some Christians use this time to "give up something" to remind them of what Jesus "gave up" for us on the Cross. You are welcome to give up something important during this time if you'd like. However, it's not necessary. In the next six weeks we'll be looking at some "wilderness" experiences from scripture and comparing them to some of our own so that the next time we feel "lost in a desert" we will be able to draw encouragement and strength from the scriptures in this study. At the end of each study we'll look at what was "given up" (sometimes for the good and sometimes unnecessarily) because of the wilderness experience. While this study was originally written to be used during the Lenten season, you'll find it appropriate for anytime you'd like to learn more about how and why God uses the wilderness times in our life.
