This is a second novel about Podkayne, named after Robert Heinlein's character in his novel "Podkayne of Mars" and her family, including her new baby girl Friday. When they arrive with their interstellar cruise liner from Earth at Alpha Centauri they are set to change over to a very modern newly built and much larger ship. But it isn't just a cruise liner; it is a covertly built battlecruiser which is a combination mobile starfighter base. There have been indications of need for such increased firepower and her Mother is a highly respected Captain both in commercial lines and in military vehicles. She is to maintain a military presence all the while conveying passengers from Earth to Alpha Centauri and back again.But... such is not to be. They are suddenly attacked just after her mother and father take off on a two week vacation leaving her and her husband Joe, a highly decorated military intelligence officer, in charge of the Minerva. Joe and then Podkayne become captain while her mother ends up as chief admiral of the fleet. It is a crash course of new vessel construction all the while trying to protect all the planets that have been colonized as well as several friendly alien species.As the war progresses it is clear the enemy will not give an inch; the only choice is to seek out and destroy them before they can exterminate all the colonists. They cannot be reasoned with and refuse all communication. Nineteen year old Podkayne, just recently having given birth, turns out to be a natural instinctive captain and her husband defers to her while he seeks out intelligence on the location of the enemy strongholds. Podkayne, in the end, concludes what her husband has called the conflict "The War To End All Wars" in a way only she, with the help of her sister who is the ship computer also named Minerva, could ever come up with. In her heart she knows Heinlein himself would have been proud of her.

Johnson, a loner for some time, runs across a woman passed out from the noonday heat. He helps her and they seem to hit it off right from the first. This is very rare since after the nuclear attack which took out the entire grid, plunging the entire nation virtually back into the stone age, people don't trust each other.As it turns out they get together and she tells him why she was out where she was, looking for women in trouble, starving, destitute women looking for any way to make a living. Even at the only bordello within four hundred miles run by a woman named Magdalene. She suggests she can get him a job as a guard at what amounts to a fort and they head there.Along the way they run into a teenage girl Johnson knew the mother of; her home had been burnt to the ground and everyone killed in a marauding raid. They bury the dead and take her with them. Once at the bordello Jonson meets Becky, Sarah's sister, who also works there.The next day a major robbery hits the fort and some of the counting women are killed and lots of gold is taken. Johnson heads off along with others to get the gold back and seek revenge. As he leaves he learns they also took Becky, Sarah's little virgin sister...

Podkayne manages alcohol and food on her family's spaceship, the Mother Lode. Her mother is the Captain and her father is the First Officer and Chief Purser. She is just now 18 years and about three days old when her parents tell her she is named for Robert A. Heinlein's novel heroine "Podkayne of Mars". They also inform her she is exactly like Heinlein's Podkayne except she is a little sexpot. They also ask her to keep her sexcapades discreet as every man wants a woman without much of a sexual past to teach her himself. They don't believe she's a virgin waiting for her right man. The right man turns out to be Joe Potterby; he's leaving Earth because they forbid surgery to force out migration. He is going with the ship to Alpha Centauri. Poddy and Joe just hit it off... she becomes his girlfriend but, if Joe gets his surgery at the final port of call, as well as her virginity, they have to stop the sabotage of the ship from rival spacelines...
