Cette complaisance de ma mémoire aura eu du moins cet avantage de situer dans leur atmosphère les épisodes d'un récit qui risquerait de paraître invraisemblable, tant cette année 1902 est déjà lointaine, et par sa date et par certaines de ses moeurs! On était donc en 1902 et au mois d'avril. Ce jour-là, et quand vers les dix heures du matin, Hilda Campbell, mise en selle par Jack Corbin, suivant l'habitude, avait commencé de cheminer du côté du Bois, elle ne se doutait guère que le coquet cheval alezan brûlé qu'elle montait-sa robe favorite-l'emportait, de son pas cadencé, vers une rencontre d'une importance solennelle pour son avenir. C'était une bète très douce, qui répondait au nom énigmatique de Rhin. Cette appellation cachait un jeu de mots qui prouvera l'innocence du genre d'esprit dont étaient coutumiers les colons de la rue de Pomereu. Cet alezan avait été expédié, la semaine précédente, par le mème bateau qu'un rouan, et l'envoyeur avait dans la lettre d'avis, libellé ainsi le signalement de ce dernier: a Rome (Rouan se dit, en anglais, roan et se prononce, en effet, rome.)...
