The Insect Gazette is a magazine edited by Beatrice Beetle, in which a staff of insect-reporters interview other insects such as a praying mantis, a daddy long-legs, and a cricket rap group. The Gazette also reports stories about insects submitted by anonymous sources that deal with important environmental issues that are of concern to insects and humans alike.

Steven Johnson is a medical intern at a teaching hospital in New Jersey. He gets off to a horrendous start when a crazed preacher attacks Steven and is impaled on a scalpel the intern is holding in his hand at the time of the attack. The man dies. The family initiates a malpractice suit. Steven is placed on probation because of questions regarding his treatment of the preacher two weeks before the attack.His personal life becomes further complicated when a budding romance with a slightly older female attending physician, Dr. Chris Murphy, is threatened by his friendship with Jacqueline Martin, a stunning student nurse from Jamaica, who pursues Steven with graceful determination. A black cloud follows Steven about the hospital. The core drama of the novel erupts when a young postpartum patient, Anna Amin, confides in Steven that her husband has physically abused her. Steven is convinced that Anna and her baby are in imminent danger. He arranges for their immediate transfer to a woman's shelter. Anna's husband, Anwar, an Algerian exchange student, is furious. Anna's private physician is likewise astonished and angered. Anwar, on the advice of his attorney returns to Algeria, invalidating his wife's spousal visa. The INS on pressure from the Algerian Ambassador is compelled to seek Anna's deportation.Anwar lies to Anna's family, telling them she had run off with an American doctor, that she walks the streets without the veil and that she has brought shame on him and her family. Steven is convinced that Anna would be in grave danger if she were forced to return to Algeria. Her child would most certainly be taken from her. Steven, Chris and Jacqueline work frantically to prevent that from happening.

I tell of my early life experiences through a child's eyes and voice to portray events as I saw them, in my innocence and limited understanding. Peter, the little boy, not the adult author, describes his family, friends, and surroundings as they appeared to him at the approximate time he experienced them. This random gathering of memories and events is like a family album, where the connections between the pictures and the stories they tell, often can only be surmised. These vignettes will introduce you to my family, relatives, family friends, and my childhood friend, Mark Stillman. As this memoir begins, I am five years old. My mother has seven children to raise on her own. I am the youngest. My oldest sister Helen is sixteen. Geraldine is fourteen, Phyllis twelve, Tony eleven, Chickey nine, and Frances seven. The year is 1933. My mother is thirty-four. She has been separated from my father for three years The nation is in the midst of the Great Depression. My mother supports her seven children from a part-time sewing job and a meager Relief check. My aunts and uncles are practically the sole sources of our hand-me-down clothing and an occasional bottle of homemade wine. But financial help from relatives is impossible because they too live on marginal incomes.

This anthology of short stories by the author includes poetry, essays, and stand-alone excerpts from the author's memoirs and other works. Also included is a visit to Dante's Inferno, where the author adds a subset of level 3 where the glutinous reside. Level 3B is reserved for those who, with foreknowledge and for personal gain, abuse the environment.

In the 1950s, they didn't talk much about domestic violence, infidelity, or alcoholism. Fifteen-year-old Mathew Sweeney has no guidelines to help him navigate as he enters an internal journey of conflicting emotions. He is in love with Maria, with whom he works at a summer job at the community swimming pool. She is a junior and more interested in Jason, a senior who tools about campus in a baby-blue 1957 Chevrolet. His father, Danny, a sportswriter with a byline in the town newspaper, had been his early childhood hero. The newspaper editor fires Danny when his drinking causes his workplace performance to suffer. The Sweeneys sell their home and move into an apartment. Clara, now supports the family by working as a hostess at a local hotel. His parents are now in open warfare over his father's infidelity. Matthew and his mother leave Danny and move in with her mother. Matthew believes things could not possibly get worse, but he is mistaken. The unthinkable happens.

The sequel begins as a mulatto slave named Chambers, who had been raised as a white man is transported down river to be auctioned off in the Baton Rouge slave market. Chambers was despised by the other slaves on the Louisiana plantation and hated by his ignorant master, John Tibbets. Chamber's is unable to make a daily quota of picked cotton, and endures multiple vicious beatings. Unfit for farming, he was made a "driver," a slave who pushes the workers to produce up to levels demanded by the master. One of his duties was to deliver lashings to other slaves, an endeavor he performed with gusto. The slaves grew to despise him and conspired to murder him. He did not die, but was badly crippled and of no use on the plantation. His mother, Roxy, by then, a freed slave, bought her son's freedom. They return to Dawson's Landing. The remainder of the sequel is about the complex relationship between Chambers, Tom. and Roxy.
