The story of a priest named Romuald who falls in love with Clarimonde, a beautiful woman who turns out to be a vampire. The story opens with the elderly Romuald recounting a strange adventure during his youth. The day of his ordination many years ago, he saw a beautiful young woman in the church. He heard her voice promising to love him and to make him happier than he would be in Paradise, if he would just leave the church.

As soon as Phoebus-Apollo, standing in his quadriga, had gilded to saffron the summits of fertile Mount Tmolus with his rays, the good people of Sardes were all astir, going and coming, mounting or descending the marble stairways leading from the city to the waters of the Pactolus, that opulent river whose sands Midas filled with tiny sparks of gold when he bathed in its stream. One would have supposed that each one of these good citizens was himself about to marry, so solemn and important was the demeanour of all.

Les manches de son pourpoint cachaient les mains comme les manches d'un froc, et il entrait jusqu'au ventre dans ses bottes à chaudron, ergotées d'un éperon de fer. Cette défroque hétéroclite était celle de feu son père, mort depuis quelques années, et dont il achevait d'user les habits, déjà mûrs pour le fripier à l'époque du décès de leur premier possesseur. Ainsi accoutré de ces vêtements, peut-être fort à la mode au commencement de l'autre règne, le jeune baron avait l'air à la fois ridicule et touchant; on l'eût pris pour son propre aïeul. Quoiqu'il professât pour la mémoire de son père une vénération toute filiale et que souvent les larmes lui vinssent aux yeux en endossant ces chères reliques, qui semblaient conserver dans leurs plis les gestes et les attitudes du vieux gentilhomme défunt, ce n'était pas précisément par goût que le jeune Sigognac s'affublait de la garde-robe paternelle. Il ne possédait pas d'autres vêtements et avait été tout heureux de déterrer au fond d'une malle cette portion de son héritage.
