Philosophy has always turned on grammatical particles. With, near, next, like, from, towards, against, because, for, through, my - these words designate types of conjunctive relation arranged in a roughly ascending order of intimacy and inclusiveness. A priori, we can imagine a universe of withness but no nextness; or one of nextness but no likeness, or of likeness with no activity, or of activity with no purpose, or of purpose with no ego. These would be universes, each with its own grade of unity. The universe of human experience is, by one or another of its parts, of each and all these grades. Whether or not it possibly enjoys some still more absolute grade of the union does not appear upon the surface.

THOUGH it would seem that the sane and simple message of this essay could not be misconstrued, the fact that it has been wholly misunderstood in newspaper comment warns us that it is necessary to preface it by stating that it does not counsel all persons to drive themselves at all times beyond the limits of ordinary endurance, that it is not a gospel of over-strain nor an advocate of the use of alcohol and opium as stimulants in emergencies. It states that "second wind" is a reality in the mental as in the physical realm and that it can be found and used when needed - nothing more.

Pragmatism, by William James, has wielded an immense influence on modern thought on the rise of science and capitalism in America. In this classic book, James challenges philosophers of all classes to provide a net value to their systems; that is, how do they affect human life or make the world better or worse? James insists that no philosophy finally matters unless it impacts life in concrete terms. To lock down his philosophy he fashions a new model of truth, stating that whatever is beneficial is true. There are huge problems here, such as the rise of the subjective. James doesn't specify to whom truth should be beneficial (humanity in general? Subjective selves?), so his theory leads to strange quandaries. It would be "true" for a sound-minded criminal on trial to plead insanity, and it would also be "true" for the prosecutor to charge guilt and sanity. Obviously, confusing "useful" and "true" is a category obfuscation. As well, morality would suffer on this view. If lying is useful then regarding lies as truths is fully permissible according to James's line of thought. Nonetheless, Pragmatism is an important read simply because so much of today's world is run in terms of the useful rather than the ideal or intrinsically good. That is why art is marginalized, morality compromised, and capital generating systems glorified. James's Pragmatism is extremely useful in helping us to understand ourselves-and modern thinking-today.

The Principles of Psychology is a monumental text in the history of psychology, written by William James and published in 1890. There were four methods in James' psychology: analysis (the logical criticism of precursor and contemporary views of the mind), introspection (the psychologist's study of his own states of mind), experiment (in hypnosis or neurology), and comparison (the use of statistical means to distinguish norms from anomalies). James discussed experiments on illusions, too (optical, auditory, etc.), and offered a physiological explanation for many of them, that "the brain reacts by paths which previous experiences have worn, and makes us usually perceive the probable thing, i.e. the thing by which on previous occasions the reaction was most frequently aroused." Illusions are thus a special case of the phenomenon of habit. Principles is an important source for the history of psychology in the 19th century.

Pragmatism is the philosophy of considering practical consequences and real effects to be vital components of meaning and truth. Although Charles Sanders Peirce is considered the founder of the American pragmatism, it was developed later by William James.

"Pragmatism" by William James is the most famous single work of American philosophy. Its sequel, "The Meaning of Truth," is its imperative and inevitable companion. The definitive texts of both works are together in this volume, "Pragmatism and the Meaning of Truth." Pragmatism resulted from a series of lectures delivered by William James in 1906 and 1907. This series of lectures illustrates well the fundamental attributes of pragmatism. Written in an engaging and accessible style, Pragmatism is a valuable corrective to modern uses of the word, since the voice that speaks in its pages embodies precisely the opposite values from the pejorative senses the word has acquired. William James was a challenging thinker who deserves to be read and still has much to teach. As for Pragmatism, it remains a provocative, valuable, and important work, a classic of American thought. Pragmatism's sequel, "The Meaning of Truth," is its imperative and inevitable companion. The definitive texts of both works are together in this volume. In Pragmatism James attacked the transcendental, rationalist tradition in philosophy and tried to clear the ground for the doctrine he called radical empiricism. When first published, the book caused an uproar. It was greeted with praise, hostility, ridicule. Determined to clarify his views, James collected nine essays he had written on this subject before he wrote Pragmatism and six written later in response to criticisms by Bertrand Russell and others. He published "The Meaning of Truth" in 1909, the year before his death. "Pragmatism and the Meaning of Truth" show James at his best full of verve and good humor. Intent upon making difficult ideas clear, he is characteristically vigorous in his effort to explain his views.

For William James, pragmatism is the solution to the conflict between the demands of science and religion. He defends the relevance of temperament in each individual's adoption of a philosophy, and he understands the dispute between rationalists and empiricists as a clash of temperaments. Pragmatism is a moral commitment to a way of understanding the world that trusts that the involvement of intelligence and agents is real, and that our theories introduce new elements and modify the course of the future.

The lectures that follow were delivered at the Lowell Institute in Boston in November and December, 1906, and in January, 1907, at Columbia University, in New York. They are printed as delivered, without developments or notes. The pragmatic movement, so called, I do not like the name, but apparently it is too late to change it, seems to have rather suddenly precipitated itself out of the air. A number of tendencies that have always existed in philosophy have all at once become conscious of themselves collectively, and of their combined mission; and this has occurred in so many countries, and from so many different points of view, that much unconcerted statement has resulted. I have sought to unify the picture as it presents itself to my own eyes, dealing in broad strokes, and avoiding minute controversy. Much futile controversy might have been avoided, I believe, if our critics had been willing to wait until we got our message fairly out.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. THE pivotal part of my book named Pragmatism is its account of the relation called truth which may obtain between an idea (opinion, belief, statement, or what not) and its object.Truth, I there say, is a property of certain of our ideas. It means their agreement, as falsity means their disagreement, with reality. Pragmatists and intellectualists both accept this definition as a matter of course. Where our ideas [do] not copy definitely their object, what does agreement with that object mean? ... Pragmatism asks its usual question. Grant an idea or belief to be true, it says, what concrete difference will its being true make in any one's actual life? What experiences may be different from those which would obtain if the belief were false? How will the truth be realized? What, in short, is the truth's cash-value in experiential terms? The moment pragmatism asks this question, it sees the answer: TRUE IDEAS ARE THOSE THAT WE CAN ASSIMILATE, VALIDATE, CORROBORATE, AND VERIFY. FALSE IDEAS ARE THOSE THAT WE CANNOT. That is the practical difference it makes to us to have true ideas; that therefore is the meaning of truth, for it is all that truth is known as.
