Hunt once again confronts Grant and insists on being transferred and President Grant calls on Hunt for one more impossible task. Hunt heads to New Orleans for a dangerous task that may be a oneway trip.

A man is killed every day in Coulson, and when they arrive, they find the whole town is against them. Clayton meets a woman that he has feelings for but refuses to admit it. He is afraid of where it may lead.

While riding to discover new land Charles is bushwhacked by two criminals on the run, and is robbed of his prized personal possessions, and rolled over a cliff and left for dead. Wind Fire returns home without Charles, and a massive manhunt is instigated by Hunt and the other available U.S. Deputy Marshals. Charles is found, and he is near death and is transported to a hospital in New Orleans for head trauma surgery. Charles awakens, but doesn't know who he is and is surrounded by people that he has no memory of.

After delivering the cattle to the Indians, Charles learns that a new Chief of the Sioux has taken over, and Charles is warned to have the white men off of the Sioux land in two days, or they will be killed. Charles says goodbye to his Sioux father that is lying on his death bed and receives a last request from his Sioux father that he isn't sure that he can fulfill.

Charles sets about buying more property to build a warehouse with a store front and sets his eyes on the vast expanse of land where he was bushwhacked and travels to Kansas City to talk to the land's owner to make the largest land purchase of his career, and makes a surprising discovery. Charles goes to his construction sites and returns to Philadelphia with his family and together, with Darren, they make plans to begin a massive construction job and Charles decides he needs to hire 1,000 men off the street to prevent losing construction jobs to his competition. Darren warns Charles that he has tried to hire men off the street before, and it met with disastrous results. Charles decides to try something new, but he is not sure it will work. Charles's task of hiring white workers is complicated by hatred of black and Chinese workers by the white workers who are filled with prejudice against people of other cultures. It becomes a situation that Charles must overcome, or face failure.
