Beginning with Calman Zamoiski's unlicensed and short-lived "wireless telephone" station in 1921, Baltimore would boast five commercial radio stations within the next 20 years. Before the 1940s ended, commercial television appeared with the debut of WMAR, Channel 2, in 1947. WMAR was unique in that it had no personnel with television experience and, initially, no studios, broadcasting instead from various remote locations. Over the years, Baltimore radio and television stations served as the launchpad or stopover point of some of the most beloved personalities in the industry. Garry Moore, Arthur Godfrey, and Jim McKay all got their starts here, while Gene Rayburn, Jon Miller, Oprah Winfrey, John Saunders, Nick Charles, Spencer Christian, Bob McAllister, and others passed through en route to national broadcasting prominence. Baltimoreans did not just bond with the people and programs of their local stations. It was a genuine love affair.

Throughout Illinois there are monuments dedicated to national figures as well as lesser known heroes. [This book highlights many of them]"--Publisher marketing.
Approximately 110,000 soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies fought along the banks of Antietam Creek in the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. In 12 hours of fighting, approximately 23,000 men fell, either killed, wounded, or missing, forever scarring the landscape around the town of Sharpsburg. Established as the Antietam Battlefield Site in 1890, Antietam National Battlefield became a National Park Service landmark in 1933. The park grew from 33 acres in the 1890s to encompassing over 3,000 acres today. Some of the Civil War's most recognizable landmarks now sit within its boundaries, including Dunker Church, Bloody Lane, and Burnside Bridge. The events that occurred across the fields and woodlots around Sharpsburg and along Antietam Creek bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Antietam National Battlefield every year.?Kevin Pawlak serves as a certified battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield. Antietam National Battlefield is filled with historic photographs of the battlefield and its development from the collections of Antietam National Battlefield Library, the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, the United States Army Heritage and Education Center, private collections, and more.

From the era of the indigenous Passamaquoddy people to the booming growth that led to its development as a 20th-century commercial hub, the history of Calais is distinctly American. Briefly settled by Europeans in 1604 when a French group that included Sa
The three things needed for the defense of a nation and its people are honest, resolute leaders; brave military service members; and a dedicated industry that can provide the proper tools needed to keep citizens safe from harm. Ever since the very beginning of the United States' existence, businesses have devoted countless amounts of time and effort to design, engineer, and produce the weapons and systems that the men and women of the armed forces need for protecting the country. A substantial part of America's "Arsenal of Democracy" has been centered in and around South Bend, Indiana. The Studebaker Company produced thousands of wagons for the Union army during the Civil War, plus trucks, aircraft engines, and more for later conflicts. Today, its descendant AM General Corporation produces tactical wheeled vehicles, including the renowned Humvee in all its many variations, for the United States and its allies. Honeywell Corporation has a long and colorful history in South Bend as well, while many smaller companies answered the call to produce military equipment for the armies of freedom.
In 1855, Rev. David W.Bacon became the first bishop of the Diocese of Portland, which included Maine and New Hampshire. Between the two states, six priests and eight churches ministered to a few hundred Catholics. In the following years, Bacon founded 63 churches, ordained 52 priests, built 23 schools, and attended to a Catholic population of about 80,000. In 1884, New Hampshire became an independent diocese. By 1903, founding bishop Denis Bradley introduced over 30 missions; parishes; schools, including Saint Anselm College; and charitable services. Since its inception in 1884, ten bishops selected from New Hampshire and other states have honored the Diocese of Manchester with their leadership. Throughout most of the 20th century, New Hampshire experienced growth in vocations and education. Starting in the 1970s, there was a decline of parochial students, vocations, and sacramental reception.Today, over 250,000 Catholics worship in the Granite State within 89 parishes.Barbara D. Miles, former archivist for the Diocese of Manchester, is currently assistant archivist for the Diocese of Portland, Maine. She serves the church as archivist, author and lecturer, and consultant. Diocesan archives, parishes, and private collectors provided sources for this publication.
Every box of Cracker Jacks comes with a prize inside. Judging by the number of prizes found in Sac County, Iowa, it is only fitting that the area has grown most of Cracker Jack's popcorn. The 1908 Chautauqua Pavilion in Sac City is one of the nation's best monuments to the movement Teddy Roosevelt described as "the most American thing in America." After becoming a county in 1851, the area's rich agricultural land attracted many settlers. W.P. Adams acquired the 7,000-acre Wheeler Ranch in 1896 and worked tirelessly to improve plant genetics, animal husbandry, and farm marketing techniques, laying the groundwork for modern farming practices. Profits from farming contributed to the growth of the county's nine incorporated communities, development of commercial and manufacturing districts, investment in cultural resources, and construction of an extensive transportation system.
Manteo embraces the northern part of Roanoke Island, the historic island inset from North Carolina's Outer Banks. It is best known as the site of Sir Walter Raleigh's first settlement in the New World. In the early 1800s, the town was a small, unnamed fishing village on Shallowbag Bay.Roughly 300 years after the colonists mysteriously disappeared, the town was named Manteo after the Native American who befriended the settlers and was baptized by them. The peaceful life enjoyed by islanders radically changed when they were overwhelmed by Union army troops, Confederate prisoners, and 3,000 former slaves who made up the Freedmen's Colony during the Civil War.In 1899, Manteo incorporated and became the commercial and governmental center of Dare County.National recognition came several decades later in 1937 with the production of Paul Green's outdoor drama The Lost Colony.Manteo has undergone many timely and creative renovations, including an ambitious project that culminated in 1984 with the celebration of our nation's 400th anniversary on the island where America first began.
