It follows the life of William Mulholland, chief engineer of the Los Angeles Water Company, who spent most of his fifty years with the company searching for new sources of water to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing population in a city that he had grown to love. Several of those years were spent in the construction of an aqueduct that would traverse 240 miles of desert, and tunnel through a mountain range, to reach its final destination in Los Angeles. Historians would laud the construction of the aqueduct as the greatest achievement of its kind - second only to the building of the Panama Canal.The St. Francis was not the first dam Mulholland constructed in the development of reservoirs in the Los Angeles area, but it would be the last. The dam was constructed to contain water to be used in the event of a drought. There would be enough water to accommodate the needs of Los Angeles throughout the dry period.When full, the St. Francis Dam would hold back 12 billion gallons of water. Sadly, two years after the structure was completed, at a time of night when most of the unsuspecting community was sleeping, the dam collapsed, unleashing a gigantic flood of water, a hundred feet high, that would travel fifty miles, the Pacific Ocean. It is also the story of those who courageously responded to the disaster, taking part in the rescue and recovery of the flood victims. A book of poems, all of which were written in 2023/4, in a variety of styles and approaches. All of them are short (no more than one page).The content is varied, but perhaps the best way to describe their overall style or flavour might be to say that they concern themselves with many of the themes of traditional Romanticism: nature, madness, love, nostalgia, childhood, memory, loss, melancholia, dreams, the supernatural, beauty. Many have a philosophical tone.About a fifth of the poems are ekphrastic: that is, they are reactions to other works of art, especially paintings and songs. For example, there are poems based on paintings by Van Gogh, Matisse, Velasquez, Hopper, (among many others), and songs by Nico, the Beach Boys, Neu and Popol Vuh (again among others).Since the author is now 70 and most of the poems are written in a fairly traditional style, they might appeal most to fellow Boomers. Many of the poems deal with coming to terms with getting old, looking back at one's life, and preparing to face death. This sounds grim, but the mood of the poems varies a lot.As well as the poems, the book also has two other sections featuring short stories and essays.The eight short stories follow the modern trend of being really short by past standards, often around 1000-1500 words. There is no flash fiction, though. With two exceptions, they are basically realistic in style and are mostly about relationships.The eleven essays focus on Art (predominantly painting and poetry), exploring the following range of topics in terms of their relationship to Art: authenticity, materiality, the canon, success and failure, rhyme, originality, ekphrasis, science, logic, beauty, and mystification.

Without his accomplishments in the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage, it is likely that Rome would never have become the dynamic power center that it did. The languages most Europeans speak and the religions most of us practice would be entirely different today.In 218 B.C. the Carthaginian General Hannibal brought an army of Mercenaries across the Alps and into Italy. His goal was to subdue Rome, the most powerful city in Italy. He won battle after battle until the Romans, under the leadership of Quintus Fabius Maximus Cunctator stopped meeting him in battle on his terms. The war became one of attrition, which Hannibal could not win. The war would have ended on very different terms, however, terms much more favorable to Carthage, if not for the accomplishments of one man: Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus.Scipio was only seventeen when Hannibal invaded Italy. His father was the Roman Consul at that time. In the first conflict between Hannibal and the Romans, the Battle of Ticinus, the Romans were badly defeated. Young Scipio, however, showed his prowess by leading a cavalry charge from a hill and rescuing his wounded father who was about to be captured or killed.Two years later Scipio was a military tribune at the Battle of Cannae. His plan was that when the Roman army brought the war to Africa, the Carthaginians would summon Hannibal home to defend their city.Scipio and Hannibal met at the Battle of Zama in 202 B.C., and it was a decisive Roman victory, forcing Carthage into a treaty on Roman terms.Rome was now poised to conquer the civilized world.This book is an account of Scipio's life told in the first person. Despite his monumental accomplishments on behalf of Rome, Scipio is eventually brought down by one of his rivals, a man named Marcus Porcius Cato, or Cato the Elder. Cato accused Scipio's brother of financial malfeasance, and Scipio himself of bribery, charges that were totally unfounded. Scipio, enraged at this treatment, decided to leave Rome for Liternum one of the colonies he founded for his soldiers. He was in ill health and died two years later. When asked if he wanted to be buried in Rome, he replied "Ungrateful fatherland, you won't even have my bones."

Hi, my book is about how I was tested by the enemy to see how far I can handle my situation. The enemy really wanted to know if I truly loved God and I was put to the test. It was not easy because I felt I was trapped in my mind and that nobody understood what I was going through. My mind was like in a dark place and couldn't find a way out. Every time I tried to do the things I'm supposed to do in order to overcome my thoughts, it was hard. But I knew God didn't leave me and I had to use my faith like never before. The enemy was trying to convince me that God did not love me and that I was alone. I sometimes felt that way but it's normal because this life is to be lived by faith and not what we see or feel. I talk about my experiences and thoughts I had but I also talk how I overcame all of them(with prayer, worship and using the word of Christ). Sometimes we wonder why things like these happen to our lives but it's to make us a better person and to realize that we are not the only ones that go through these situations. It doesn't matter how long it takes to be healed, just don't give up and always trust God even if you don't see or feel Him. I had to really trust God and put my part, to get up and not stay on the floor.
