In Coming of Age on Film: Stories of Transformation in World Cinema, essays by twelve film scholars examine the theme of coming of age in the cinema of Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Through their consideration of the development that leads to transformation in individuals, nations, or even the film industry itself, these articles elucidate the connections among these diverse films. Bringing together a variety of related topics such as rites of passage, adolescence and maturity, and the literary genre of the Bildungsroman, Coming of Age on Film complements and puts into practice a variety of critical theories. Its focus on global cinema in French, Italian, and Spanish brings attention to the widely represented but minimally studied theme of coming of age. This volume will appeal to scholars in film studies and regional or national cultural studies, as well as those studying adolescence in literature and film.

Issues of race and ethnicity in Latin America continue to gain a growing amount of academic attention. While themes of ethnic identities, indigeneity, and race relations are commonly examined in our respective disciplines, it is less common to bring together essays from scholars from such a broad variety of disciplines. The papers collected in this volume draw on a wide range of studies from across Latin America, including the examination of ethnohistory, the environment, and culture. They convey a large diversity of perspectives, disciplines, and issues that reflect the richness and complexities of the social processes that encompass the Americas. Taken as a whole, this broad range of studies on ethnohistory, environmental and legal issues, education, and culture advances our understandings of race and ethnicity in Latin America. In the process, these studies incorporate related issues of how historical and political developments in Latin America have, and continue to be, experienced differently based on varying gendered and class perspectives. These studies examine how those speaking from the margins continue to shape and reshape what we know as Latin America.

George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901), the famous Canadian Presbyterian missionary who came to northern Formosa (Taiwan) in 1872 and preached specifically with aborigines in mind, is the subject of an interdisciplinary study by seven independent scholars interested in the nineteenth-century imperial project and Christian mission to China. Importantly, Mackay's mission defies such binary opposites as East and West: the missionary a conduit of an earlier Scottish-Canadian spirituality adapted to Taiwan that allowed converts to appropriate the Presbyterian faith on their own terms; the mission field in which he operated a biculture of foreign initiative and aboriginal agency working hand in hand. Mackay's ordination of aboriginal ministers, giving us the Northern Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (PCT), was a bold departure from the imperial, Anglo-Canadian, Presbyterian norm. So, too, his marriage to a Taiwanese slave-girl, Chhang-mia, and the arranged interracial marriages that he performed between select Chinese ministers and female Taiwanese graduates (which included his two daughters). Mackay's missionary writing and famous autobiography From Far Formosa-a fine specimen of the nineteenth-century heroic memoir genre-is notable for its defense of both gender and racial equality, and despite its unmistakable patriarchal leanings. Mackay's repudiation of Darwinism and belief in an early type of creation science therein also locates the so-called Barbarian Bible Man opposite such virulent, racist theorizing as Social Darwinism and Eugenics. He was a dentist not an abortionist. A relative unknown to most Western scholars of religion, Mackay is Taiwan's most famous native son, represented on the national stage in 2008 as a sky god and Taiwanese animistic deity of supernatural power and political influence par excellent. Although a product of the colonial times in which he lived, post-colonial scholars who ignore Mackay, his life and legacy, clearly do so at some peril.

Black Writers and the Left is a collection that examines the relationship between African American intellectuals and the American leftist movement in the first part of the twentieth century. Both literary study and cultural history, the collection contains previously unpublished interviews with Lorraine Hansberry's contemporaries and astonishing archival research into the life of Langston Hughes. Critical readings of figures like Dorothy West, Chester Himes and George Schulyer round out discussions of more prominent figures like Ralph Ellison and Richard Wright. Ultimately, Black Writers and the Left illuminates many of the nuances present in the fraught relationship between the African American literati, Marxism and one of the most influential political movements in twentieth century American history.

American Drama/Critics: Writings and Readings is a collection of essays on acknowledged classics of American drama such as Death of a Salesman, The Glass Menagerie, and Our Town, and on newer but no less esteemed works like David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross and Sam Shepard's Buried Child. Included are interviews with the great American drama critics Eric Bentley and Stanley Kauffmann; a consideration of the practice of American dramaturgy; an analysis of the adaptation to film of several American dramas; and an examination of experimental playwriting and production in the United States, as seen in the work of Gertrude Stein as well as that of other, lesser-known avant-garde dramatists. This book's thesis is not only the generally accepted one that American drama is essentially a representational one and that its avant-garde experiments are just that--experimental detours that ultimate lead back to the main highway of realism and naturalism. The thesis of Americam Drama/Critics is also that the decline of American drama in the late twentieth to early twenty-first century is paralleled by, and even attributable to, the decline or disappearance of American dramatic criticism.

What sort of thing is the mind? And how can such a thing at the same time - belong to the natural world, - represent the world, - give rise to our subjective experience, - and ground human knowledge? Content, Consciousness and Perception is an edited collection, comprising eleven new contributions to the philosophy of mind, written by some of the most promising young philosophers in the UK and Ireland. Although the root of the Hebrew name Salome is peaceful, the image spawned by the most famous woman to carry that name has been anything but peaceful. She and her story have long been linked to the beheading of John the Baptist, as described in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, since Salome was the supposed catalyst for the prophet's execution. This history of the myth of Salome describes the process by which that myth was created, the roles that art, literature, theology and music played in that creation, and how Salome's image as evil varied from one period to another according to the prevailing cultural myths surrounding women. After setting forth the Biblical and historical origins of the Salome story, the book examines the major cultural, literary and artistic works which developed and propagated it, including those by Filippo Lippi, Rogier van der Weyden, Titian, Moreau, Beardsley, Mallarme, Wilde and Richard Strauss. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of cultural history, literature and art history.

Bioeducational sciences are a broad field of study, uniting concepts from many disciplines (education, psychology, and neuroscience). At the heart of bioeducational sciences lie the fundamental questions of mind-brain and nature-nurture relationships linked to educational practical aspects. Bioeducational sciences may have three main lines of research: 1. epigenetic perspectives: studies on filogenetic evolution (evolutionary perspectives) and mind/brain ontogenesis (ontogenetic perspectives); 2. biodynamic perspectives: analysis of biological bases of learning process (biological perspectives) and individual rethinking as a whole (whole organismic perspectives); 3.synergic perspectives: mind is distributed and situated and knowledge structures are embedded in domain specific contexts (cultural and domain specific perspectives). The aim of this volume is to identify key foundational questions and classical areas of study characterizing bioeducational sciences as a field of research that considers both the extent to which biologically prepared structures constrain individual cognitive functioning and the relations between individual cognitive development and cultural domains. Believing education part of the cultural elaboration process and recognizing the importance of neuroscience research findings for educational practice, this volume focuses on topics such as the epigenesis of mind, cognitive development, learning processes, knowledge structures, theories of mind and folk theories, interaction between emotion and cognition, cognition and metacognition, and between symbolic and biological systems, across various disciplines and through a cross-cultural perspective.

In ontology, realism and anti-realism may be taken as opposite attitudes towards entities of different kinds, so that one may turn out to be a realist with respect to certain entities, and an anti-realist with respect to others. In this book, the editors focus on this controversy concerning social entities in general and fictional entities in particular, the latter often being considered nowadays as kinds of social entities. More specifically, fictionalists (those who maintain that we only make-believe that there are entities of a certain kind) and creationists (those who believe that entities of a certain kind are the products of human activity) present themselves as the champions of the anti-realist and the realist stance, respectively, regarding the above entities. By evaluating the pros and cons of both these positions, this book intends to focus new light on a longstanding debate.

This book explores the legacy of colonial heritage on Nigerian political activities and journalistic practices. It asserts that journalism and multi-party politics were introduced into the country during British colonial rule, and, while they have become domesticated and indigenised, they still exhibit traces of their roots because they emerged in a different socio-cultural and political environment. Taking as its point of departure the view that, without the colonial intervention, the Nigerian state may not have come into being or survived in its present form, this book offers fresh insight into the impact of British colonial rule on contemporary journalistic practices and political activities more than 100 years after the 'creation' of Nigeria.It draws attention to the enduring effect of colonial inheritance on Nigeria and how the 'creation' process of the country produced unintended consequences that remain problematic. Using press coverage of the politics of transition-to-civil-rule programmes during periods of military dictatorship as a case study, the book identifies trends and patterns of influence from the past that have been interlaced into the present.

This book is a passionate rendezvous with cinema, the most collaborative of art forms. The essays here explore the possibilities offered by a close reading of cinema that keeps cultural contexts and their socio-historical roots firmly in sight. This collection does not consider the "e;frame"e;, that oft-referenced basic unit of vision in films, as a limiting structure. Rather, it brings into purview what is left out. Divided into three sections, the essays look firstly at Indian cinema, both Bollywood and regional films, tracing the journey of Indian cinema from the periphery to the center.The second section focuses on Adaptation Studies and takes an unorthodox look at classic adaptations of literature. The final section is a reappraisal of directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. The essays propose that, even though the film as an artwork does not change fundamentally over time, it still strikes a contemporary critical gaze differently.

Globally, our food system contributes to resource and habitat depletion, climate change, pollution, social injustice, economic hardship for small and medium farmers, and a public health crisis. The environmental, social, and public health costs of this current system are not properly acknowledged. Agriculture is the leading user of land and water, and a significant contributor to greenhouse gases, while farmers and agricultural and food workers are struggling to make a living. Diet is implicated in one in five deaths worldwide and diet-related illnesses are the leading cause of deaths in the US. Unhealthy diets occur across all countries and all income levels. Despite this, we are told it is the consumers' fault. Putting the blame on individuals deflects attention from the policies that created the problems in the first place. With a focus on US policies, this book examines how our global food system has given us bad choices.

Echo and Narcissus: Echolocating the Spectator in the Age of Audience Research came about as a response to the recent shift of focus in the studies of cinema. While the seventies and the eighties were marked by increasingly complex theorisations of spectatorship, the last two decades have witnessed a turn towards ethnographic research into film reception. However, this long overdue turn towards the empirical viewer has not produced a genuinely broader scope of analysis. It has rather, all too hastily, consigned the spectator, a textually constructed viewing position, to oblivion, thanks to the concept's perceived hegemonic and totalising premise. Echo and Narcissus intervenes into this state of affairs by arguing for a productive nexus between theorisations of spectatorship and the currently more fashionable audience research. Petek maintains that an informed mapping of contemporary (and past) filmviewing practices still requires a spectatorial model and she offers such a model through a re-reading of Ovid's tale of Echo and Narcissus. She demonstrates that the myth's central role in traditional theorisations of spectatorship has not yet been properly reflected upon. Her critical recuperation of the Ovidian myth provides a revised model of the spectator-one with discursive access to all types of cinema, yet, flexible enough to accommodate a range of viewers' responses and their cultural diversity.
