The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the peasants in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They are drawn from some books I found in shops when I visited the former U.S.S.R. in 1988 as part of a citizen diplomacy group. I was intrigued by these folktales, since my paternal grandmother lived for some time in Odessa in the Ukraine. Also, I found these stories share a common theme --the poor peasant is able to succeed despite obstacles against an unfair ruler. He does so by being wise and generous, and having a strong desire to help and protect his family. Generally, the rich merchant or powerful ruler is foiled by his own greed and stupidity. The following stories come from the Ukraine, Latvia, and Turkmen. These are three of my favorite stories.
The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the American Indians. They are: - The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock, told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.- How Coyote Became Clever, told by the Karok, a tribe from Northwestern California, located along the Klamath River.- How Coyote Brought Winter into the World, told by the Zuni Indians, one of the pueblo peoples, who have lived in villages in the area of New Mexico. While these Indian tribes come from very different areas, their coyote stories are similar in the way Coyote has friends with other animals, participates with them on adventures, and screws things up no matter what he does.

Why is there so much uncertainty about how to reduce crime and fix what's wrong with the criminal justice system? How can we make these fixes and lower the high costs of incarceration?UNCERTAIN JUSTICE discusses recent problems and suggests some fixes. To this end, it presents a commentary based on a recent series of press releases on current issues and is divided into these sections:- Improving citizen-police relationships - Promoting prison reform and better prison sentencing - Healing the divisions in American society - Dealing with illegal immigration - Coping with the opioid crisis - Portraying the criminal justice crisis in popular culture - Using a social media and video campaign to help fix the criminal justice system. The chapters in each section highlight what's wrong in response to recent developments in legislation, in the news, and in research reports. Then, each chapter concludes with some suggestions for reforming the system. Today, these fixes are needed more than ever, given the spiraling costs of crime and imprisoning too many prisoners for much longer than necessary. As the book describes, we need to have as many productive, understanding, legal, law-abiding citizens as possible to move the country forward.

The Return of the Neanderthals is a series of interconnected stories that begin when a paleontologist brings back some DNA from a Neanderthal burial ground discovered in an archeological dig in Northern Europe. He then works in secret with a scientist friend to bring back six Neanderthal babies using stem cell, cloning, and CRISPER techniques, along with the help of some surrogate mothers. After the Neanderthals are raised in a lab with the help of a nursery school teacher, they are placed in a group home, where an unexpected incident leads to their discovery and a media story about them.In the next story, the owner of a robot factory learns about the success of the first group of Neanderthals and decides to create a workforce of Neanderthals to replace the robots in his factory and shipping facility. After that program proves successful and word of it spreads, some detectives think the Neanderthals could help them in crime fighting, because of their strength, aggressiveness, and hunting skills. So they recruit and train a team of six Neanderthals to help them find and capture elusive criminals. Once the Neanderthals prove their worth, the team tackles other assignments for the cops, and they face challenges and danger along the way. In the third story, a criminal gang leader learns about the Neanderthals working for the cops, and he decides to create his own gang of Neanderthals to commit crimes for profit and revenge and to thwart the efforts of the Neanderthals helping the cops. The Neanderthals Return combines the beginnings of three separate books in the return of the Neanderthal series -- The Neanderthals Are Back, The New World Neanderthals: The Rise of the Force, and The Rise of the Gang. These will ultimately be three separate books with ten or more additional chapters in each book. Each chapter features a complete episode as in a TV series, featuring a group of Neanderthals, and each book builds on the previous book in the series In the first book: The Neanderthals Are Back, a paleontologist working in Germany, brings back some Neanderthal DNA and works with a scientist to bring back six Neanderthals. As part of a secret project, the children grow up initially in a lab with the help of a nursery school teacher, and at five or six, they are placed in a group home for kids with disabilities. Their secret is revealed after an unexpected incident brings in the cops and the media. Other stories in the first book continue as the children grow up, become teens, and then young adults facing the challenge of being different. The second book The New World Neanderthals: The Rise of the Force, builds on this initial story, when the owner of a robot factory learns about the success of the first group of Neanderthals. He decides to create a workforce of Neanderthals to replace the robots in his factory and shipping facility. When some local detectives hear about this, they recruit six of the Neanderthals to help them find and catch criminals, when the usual law enforcement methods fail. In their first assignment, they track down an escaped convict who has fled into the desert and the mountains beyond it. Later stories feature the team tackling other assignments for the cops. The third book The New World Neanderthals: The Rise of the Gang builds on this second book after a criminal gang leader learns about the Neanderthals working for the cops. He decides to create a gang of Neanderthals to help his gang commit crimes as well as thwart the efforts of the New Neanderthals Force. The first book in the series describes their initial two assignments. Later stories in the series feature their additional criminal activities and confrontations with the Force. The Neanderthals Return features the first complete episode in each of these series. These were published separately, and now they are together.
