This book is an insightful and convincing interpretation of Jung's encounter with Christianity. In the last 20 years of his life, Jung wrote extensively on the Trinity, the Mass, alchemy, and the Bible, in what Murray Stein understands as his effort to help Christianity evolve into its next stage of development. Here, Stein provides a comprehensive analysis of Jung's writings on Christianity in relation to his personal life, psychological thought, and efforts to transform Western religion. The book is beautifully written, tightly argued, intellectually satisfying in every way. It provides an illuminating overview of Jung's life and thought and can be recommended for both beginning students and scholars of Jung's thought as a faithful reading. -ANNE CARR, Associate Professor of Theology, University of Chicago Divinity SchoolThis is a literate and lucid treatment of an undeniably central aspect of Jung's later work, based on an admirable wide ranging store of the literature, both what is considered orthodox and much that, happily, is well beyond the limitations of that term. -WILLIAM McGUIRE, Author of Bollingen, An Adventure in Collecting the PastStein makes a dramatic, important, and novel interpretation of Jung's encounter with Christianity. His argument is lucid, careful, and persuasive. He asks seriously, in a way Jung could respect, why Jung wrote what he did about religion. -JAMES DITTES, Professor of Pastoral Theology and Psychology, Yale UniversityStein's design of Jung as therapist of Christianity works extremely well. All this is used brilliantly. I couldn't stop reading, didn't want to, am glad I didn't, learned a lot." -EUGENE GENDLIN, Associate Professor, Department of Behavioral Sciences, University of Chicago, Author of FocusingMurray Stein, Ph.D. is a supervising training analyst and former president of The International School of Analytical Psychology in Zurich, Switzerland (ISAP Zurich). His most recent books include Outside Inside and All Around, Minding the Self and The Principle of Individuation. From 2001 to 2004 he was president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology. He lectures internationally on topics related to Analytical Psychology and its applications in the contemporary world. He is publisher emeritus of Chiron Publications and is the focus of many Asheville Jung Center online seminars.

Three plays analyzed from a Jungian perspective and a fresh wit, catching many contemporary nuances in these well-loved plays and their continuing relevance for today.Barbara Rogers-Gardner has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Rutgers University and has published two novels as well as numerous scholarly articles. She has taught at Ramapo College of New Jersey, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is now a member of the faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute, a center for the study of Depth Psychology. From the book:"A model of Jung's mature, harmonious self is to be found in Prospero, who trusts that death is an initiation into divinity. Prospero's shadow is recognized and embraced in Caliban, the poetic, sensual monster who grounds us in pig-nuts and music....Not in individualism, the sort of maladaptive bog in which Claudius, lago, and Stephano sink, but in accommodating the self to the social order does the Shakespearean hero find his peace.""Dr. Rogers-Gardner places Shake-speare's characters under the lens of archetypal theory, showing us eruptions from the unconscious, fragmentation of the ego, and finally the maturation pro-cess in which opposites are conjoined. In this brilliant blend of Depth Psychol-ogy and current literary criticism, we cannot help but see ourselves." -Dr. C. Edward Crowther, Jungian psy-chotherapist and author of Intimacy: Strategies for Successful Relationships

af Irene Dugan & Avis Clendenen

The notions of love surrounding us in disguise and of life as an adventure of endless discovery are threads in Sister Irene Dugan's unique philosophy of taking the risk to live life to the fullest, of not missing the boat. The First Epistle of John (4:16) records that God is love. This God who is love desires to find a home-to abide-in us. Such love is all around in disguise awaiting our discovery. This book-part polemic, part instruction manual-is the summation of Irene's life work, told in her own words and supported by the rich understanding of her trustee.Irene Dugan entered the international Roman Catholic community of women known as the Religious of the Cenacle in 1930, taking her vows in 1938 at the age of twenty-nine. She was a teacher, director of retreats, spiritual guide, and pioneer in depth spirituality-the blending of the traditions of Christian spirituality with modern holistic depth psychology and the arts. The innovative spiritual growth groups for laywomen she began in 1946 continued until her death. In the early 1970s, her interest in psychospiritual integration led her to Dr. Ira Progoff, and she became a Progoff Intensive Journal consultant, conducting innovative workshops in the U.S., England, Ireland, Scotland, and France. Irene dedicated many years to exploring the integration of the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus, with holistic depth psychology.Avis Clendenen met Sister Dugan in 1971 when she was twenty-one and in search of a spiritual mentor. Irene served as her spiritual guide for the next twenty-six years. Their last conversation took place in June 1997, a few weeks before Irene's death. She directed Avis to pick up a box she had left for her at the Fullerton Cenacle. The box contained two copies of her unfinished manuscript, an audio recording of her introduction to the book, and assorted notes and papers. Thus Avis became a trustee of Love Is All Around in Disguise, the title Irene had given to her book.Avis writes, "In putting together this book, it has been my challenge and graced opportunity to respect her voice and unique expressions in bringing to fruition this singular aspect of her spiritual legacy. This book [is] for those seeking a fuller share in the greatness-the potential for fulfilling ourselves-that Irene believed is our destiny."

Myths are humanity's topography, genealogy, and history. They provide symbols that help us live; their characters and deeds tell us what is successful and what fails, and under which conditions. In Mythanalysis, mythographer and psychologist Pierre Solie pays particular attention to two myths about the Great Mother -- those pertaining to the Babylonian goddess Tiamat and the Egyptian goddess Isis. He analyzes these myths using several developmental diagrams and proposes the idea of chiasma -- which means cross -- to account for the crossovers where psychological changes take place. Numerous clinical cases are also presented that support the use of myth in therapy. Mythanalysis is a brilliant contribution to the science of human nature.Table of ContentsPart One Mythanalysis DefinedLaura's Case, or the Return to the Land of EgyptMyths About Life, Sex, and Death: The Myth of Isis and OsirisDialectical Models: Cannibalism and AgapeThe Babylonian Myth of Marduk and TiamatLaura's ReturnPart Two Mythanalysis AppliedNocturnal Dreaming: Manifestation of Objective Psychic Reality and Witness to Its TransformationThe Psychotherapist as Sacred Prostitute of Nighttime and Daytime DreamsGeo-History: Political, Imaginary, and TherapeuticTherapeutic LiteratureA Return to Myth

"Aanavi's story takes us into the belly of the beast in an exploration of the soul's wounding and stands eye-to-eye with the demons in an honest attempt to make a different relationship with these entities. Aanavi hones in on the entity of heroin, which is the one spirit visitor that has given him the gift of insight during this lifetime."--From the foreword by Dr. Eduardo Duran. Carl Jung spoke of pistis, the trusting heart. He said that this fundamental capacity for trust is the precursor to faith, and that without this essential quality, faith in something greater faith in one's own process, faith in the wholeness of the psyche is impossible. For the author of this book, pistis involves the ability to trust one's own subjectivity, one's felt sense, regardless of whether it jibes with what is externally acceptable or valid, regardless of the outcome. In The Trusting Heart, Dr. Aanavi writes about his experience over the past twenty-plus years, both as a person in recovery and as a clinician. The book is about his exploration, his process, and his commitment to both the profoundly personal and the remarkably vast. It is about telling the stories of one s experience and committing to the integrity of one's felt truth and to following one s energetic thread wherever it might lead.
