Twenty years ago San Diego was rocked by a horrific car bombing. Local technology researcher Adam Collins and his young son were killed, and his wife Anita horribly maimed. Although the bombing at first appeared to be the work of the anti-technology extremist "The Unabomber," he was eventually ruled out as the killer. The crime went unsolved. Now former SDPD detective Nevada James, with three months sobriety under her belt, is asked by Anita Collins to take another look at the case. Nevada doesn't believe she'll come up with anything after so much time has passed, but she finds Anita fascinating. Is she the kind, grandmotherly woman she appears to be, or is she something else entirely? Meanwhile, a copycat killer is loose on the streets of San Diego and Nevada's former protégé calls her in for advice. Posing his victims in much the same manner as the Laughing Man, the killer appears to be after little more than respect. Whether he wants it from Nevada or the Laughing Man himself remains to be seen, but the body count is growing. Can Nevada beat him at his own game without losing herself again in the process?
Three years ago, top San Diego homicide detective Nevada James went up against an infamous serial killer called the Laughing Man...and lost. The mental breakdown that followed left her institutionalized and no longer able to work as a police officer. Having lost everything, Nevada is content to do odd jobs to keep a step ahead of the bill collectors and fund her out-of-control drinking problem. But that changes when Alan Davies, a local crime lord, comes to her with a problem. His wife and daughter are missing and he can't go to the police. If Nevada helps him, he'll pay her enough that she'll never have to worry about money again. But what should have been a simple missing persons case quickly turns deadly. Alan Davies has enemies, and in the course of trying to save his family Nevada finds herself in the middle of a gang war. But her own demons are even more menacing, and the Laughing Man is still out there.
Oliver Jones used to live an ordinary life, until one night a stray cat began speaking to him and things began to go very wrong. Now he is on the run, hunted by an inhuman assassin who will stop at nothing to kill him. His only hope for survival rests with a trio of unlikely new allies: A werewolf with a fondness for Hawaiian shirts, a strange little girl who just might be immortal, and a gunfighter with an anger management problem. For better or for worse, Oliver lives in interesting times...
Riley Flynn loved books. She just never expected to find herself trapped inside one. Riley had always wanted to be a writer. It was something of a family tradition. Years ago, her great-grandfather had written a series of popular fantasy novels about a world called Alora. They'd been full of magic, mystical creatures, and adventures, and Riley thought they were just about the best books in the world. On her eleventh birthday Riley received a mysterious gift: a set of notebooks containing the handwritten first draft of her great-grandfather's first novel. The odd thing was, nobody knew who had sent them to her. Riley's great-grandfather had vanished many years earlier under circumstances that had never been explained. His notebooks hadn't been seen since. And while the old notebooks might have seemed harmless enough, they contained a power Riley could never have believed was possible. Now she finds herself trapped in Alora, the land of her great-grandfather's stories, with a misunderstood fairy as her only companion. Her only chance to get back to her own world lies in freeing the greatest wizard Alora has ever seen from a magical prison, all while being hunted by an evil queen who will stop at nothing to find her and claim the fairy's magic as her own.
