It has long been acknowledged that the classic textbook Basics of Biblical Hebrew was the standard Hebrew grammar for college and seminary students wishing to study biblical Hebrew. With the release on Jo Ann Hackett's grammar A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew that assumption can no longer be made. Hackett's grammar is arranged in 30 lessons which makes it excellent for intensive study over the period of 1 semester, or for 2 semesters over the course of an entire school year. During the study the stude4nt will encounter several new approaches to learning the language. First, Hackett lists verbal forms from 1st person to 3rd person, rather than the traditional approach of 3rd to 1st. She acknowledges that the traditional way in counter intuitive with English speaking students because they learn their verbs from 1st to 3rd. Second, rather than introducing both strong and weak verbs together, Hackett divides them and presents all strong verbs first, and then introduces weak verbs near the end of the book. Again, the principle in play here is to follow a formal order that layers and slowly introduces nuance into the language rather than shifting back and forth between straight forward items, and more difficult aspects of the language. Third, Hackett also jettisons what she believes are "old-fashioned methods" of teaching the Hebrew verbal system in favor of a more simple, but also more descriptive system using the terms "prefix conjugation" and "suffix conjugation." She also uses ve-qatal to describe what is popularly known as the "converted perfect". Fourth, unlike many Hebrew grammars, Hackett introduces her verbal forms logically. She notes, "It is a logical progression to begin with the prefix conjugation and lead up to the consecutive preterite. The consecutive preterite is the form beginning students must know thoroughly in order to read most biblical prose, and in order to lead them to that form, I needed to introduce the jussive, and in order to introduce the jussive, I first needed to present the prefix conjugation. Finally, Hackett introduces several new pedagogical techniques in her grammar. She emphasizes accent marks in her exercises, though both are artificial, or written by Hackett rather than taken from the biblical text. But Hackett's goal justifies her actions; she wants "to present both disjunctive and conjunctive accents to the students, and at this early time in their biblical Hebrew study, the impossibility of some of my combinations will not affect their learning the [accent] system as a whole." Along with this Hackett does stress the memorization of paradigms, and supplies verbs, where needed, to complete the paradigm even if a particular verbal form does not appear in the Hebrew text. The CD which accompanies the book contains several helpful features for the student, not least of which is its helpful pronunciation guide. This includes the pronunciation of all Hebrew-to-English exercises in lessons 1-15, and the first two exercises of lessons 16-30. It also supplies the full pronunciation of Genesis 22.1-19, a common text used by instructors to help students learn pronunciation. Lastly, the answers for the books exercises can be found on the CD-ROM, and an additional workbook containing graded reading of biblical passages, glosses, additional vocabulary, is in the works and will be keyed to this book.

    af Robert E. Webber
    158,95 kr.

Worship. It isn't an entertaining showcase for a talented soprano or a lecture on textual criticism or a pleasant weekly reunion of friends and family. Instead, true worship is a joyous celebration of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And, as we actively turn our hearts toward God in earnest praise of God's great works, God in turn speaks to us and blesses us with a healing and renewing touch. In this life-changing and dynamic book, Robert Webber declares that worship is not "something done to us or for us, but by us". It is the most exhaustive demonstration of our faith and the most intimate form of relationship we can have with our Savior. Complete with a guide for group or personal study, Worship Is a Verb will show you how to leave the dull confines of the pew and enter the courts of the Living God.

  • - Spiritual Practices for Everyday Life
af Hendrickson Publishers & Wendy Murray
    108,95 kr.

The spiritual disciplines of acceptance and gratitude are easy to practice when all is going well--when the sun is shining and our relationships are fulfilling, when work is going great and the sermon on Sunday touched our hearts. But when all is not well, discontent can rear its ugly head. All of a sudden we're no longer satisfied with our appearance, our friendships, our lives. When we're suffering, acceptance and gratitude can seem impossible. In this two-part study guide, learn about acceptance and gratitude from biblical characters who managed to find both in the midst of suffering. Learn from Leah how to fight discontent and "choose" to see God's goodness and faithfulness. Learn from Job's grief and confusion how to humbly accept difficult circumstances and move on from them. Learn from Mary how to trust and praise God when the future is not clear. And learn from Jesus--the most incredible example of acceptance in history!--how to relinquish our own will and to accept the Father's. ""Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, 'My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.' So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. . . . For when I am weak, then I am strong."" --2 Corinthians 12:8-10 "The purpose of this study guide series is to help you use spiritual practices to make your own life richer, fuller, and deeper. It can be used as a stand-alone Bible study guide for groups or individuals, or as a companion alongside the "Everyday Matters Bible for Women." The twenty-four spiritual practices in this series are "Acceptance, Bible Study & Meditation, Celebration, Community, Confession, Contemplation, Faith, Fasting, Forgiveness, Gratitude, Hospitality, Justice, Mentoring, Outreach, Prayer, Reconciliation, Sabbath & Rest, Service, Silence, Simplicity, Solitude, Stewardship, Submission," and "Worship." Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ) is a detailed and up-to-date presentation of the available evidence for the transmission of the text of the Hebrew Bible. • af James H. Charlesworth
    628,95 kr.

Biblical authors, like any other authors, were dependant on a vast array of literary sources from the ancient world. Many of these documents are tragically lost, but what remains provides insight into the voluminous, fascinating, complex, and dynamic literary world that shaped the expressions of faith found in the Old and New Testaments. James H. Charlesworth's classic 2 volume compendium provides these texts in a two-volume compendium entitled The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha. Originally published by Yale University Press, the leading critical translation of these ancient texts is now available from Hendrickson Publishers in paperback--and at a fraction of its original price.Volume 1 contains "Apocalyptic Literature" and "Testaments" that reflect a wildly varying trend towards apocalyticism in ancient Judaism. Yet, despite the existence of this movement on the fringe of Judaism, the movement maintained a definitive influence, and produced amazing, if not disturbing, literary expressions. There can be no doubt that these writings shaped the apocalyptic imagination of the biblical authors and helped to shape the way early Christians interpreted the promised return of Jesus Christ. If the contents of Volume 1 were not enigmatic enough, Volume 2 is, arguably, even more cryptic in its contents featuring expansions of the Hebrew Bible---legends and wisdom literature, prayers and psalms, and fragments of lost works. While these works are not so imaginative as Volume 1 they do much to aid our understanding how the religious life of Judaism was lived and practiced in the ancient world, after the Old Testament closed, and Christianity began to emerge. As a unit, these two volumes, like no other collection of texts available, illuminates the literary, social, religious, and theological context in which the Bible was shaped. They are an indispensable tool providing great insight into how religion functioned and how it was expressed in both official and unofficial circles.
