Definition of Terms-Thrombosis, Thromboembolic Disease, Atherosclerosis, and Blood Clotting The terms heart attack or myocardial infarction are more commonly used than thrombosis. Thrombosis may be defined as the process of formation of a coalescent or agglutinated solid mass of blood components in the blood stream.

Interferon was first discovered in 1957. We know some of the switches involved in interferon gene expression and its secretion by virally and immune stimulated cells. Such techniques have provided us with almost unlimited quantities of highly purified interferon for clinical trial in patients with a spectrum of infectious and malignant diseases.

Linear chain substances span a large cross section of contemporary chemistry ranging from covalent polymers, to organic charge transfer com plexes to nonstoichiometric transition metal coordination complexes.

We are proud to present Volume 3 of Biological Magnetic Resonance, a series that has met with praise from the scientific community. This volume covers the new applications of various multiple irradia­ tion techniques to the NMR of biomolecules; the chapter of Keller and Wuthrich describes much of the technique and its applications to hemo­ proteins. The ESR of some hemoproteins in the single crystal is described by Chien and Dickinson, who also include discussions of techniques and methods for single-crystal ESR of paramagnetically intrinsic and spin­ labeled protein crystals. Mims and Peisach describe the latest applications and results in electron spin echo spectroscopy of several metalloproteins. Two ESR spin probe techniques are reviewed. Chasteen describes the methods and applications of vanadyl(JV) to several systems. Ohnishi and Tokutomi describe studies of phase separations in mixed and model mem­ branes by the nitroxide spin probe technique. We have been successful in continuing to provide topics that are timely and experimentally informative with a heavy emphasis on biolo­ gically relevant applications. We thank our colleagues in the scientific com­ munity for their suggestions on future coverage-we will remain receptive to future suggestions and comments on this series. A tentative topic list for forthcoming volumes is given on the following pages.

The field of reactive intermediates has been blossoming at a rapid rate in recent years and its impact on chemistry, both "pure" and "applied," as well as on biology, astronomy, and other areas of science, is enormous.

In the rapidly developing field of environmental mutagenesis, the use of stand­ ardized protocols has permitted the evaluation of large numbers of chemicals for mutagenic and potential carcinogenic activity. In this sixth volume of Chemical Mutagens, the chapters by Perry, Williams, Rosenkranz and Leifer, Kada et al., Pienta, Tazima, Epler, and Rinkus and Legator provide a systematic listing of the chemicals that have been tested, bringing together both unpublished and previously published data. These chapters will serve as an important milestone by providing a convenient reference to tabulated test data with particular assay systems. Another important area of research is the modification of mutagenic activity. In the chapter by Sugimura and Nagao, factors that alter in vitro metabolic activation are discussed, whereas in the chapter by Maher and McCormick, the role of genetic heterogeneity is considered. Equally important is our need to obtain a better understanding of mutation-induction kinetics, and the mathematical analysis by Haynes and Eckardt provides an important step in this direction. An important new approach for the induction of specific locus mutations in human cells in culture is discussed in the chapter by Thilly and co-workers. We have also been concerned about the problems in the practical applica­ tion of various short-term tests in commerical testing laboratories. The prob­ lems emerging in the evaluation of potentially important new chemicals have been discussed in a chapter by Brusick et al.

In this fully-illustrated textbook, the author examines the spectral theory of self-adjoint elliptic operators. The author's work offers a novel method for estimation of the remainder term of a spectral function and its Riesz means without recourse to the traditional Carleman technique and Tauberian theorem apparatus.
