Mehalah - Sabine Baring-Gould - Bog

Bag om Mehalah

Mehalah is a novel written by S. Baring-Gould that was first published in 1880. Set in the early 19th century in the remote marshlands of Essex, England, the story follows the life of Mehalah, a young woman who is ostracized by her community due to her mother's reputation as a witch. Mehalah is determined to clear her mother's name and prove her own worth, but her efforts are constantly thwarted by the prejudices of those around her.As the story progresses, Mehalah becomes embroiled in a love triangle with two men: the wealthy landowner, Sir Harry, and the handsome and mysterious fisherman, Rebow. Mehalah must navigate her feelings for both men while also dealing with the challenges of her difficult past and the secrets that threaten to tear her world apart.Baring-Gould's novel is a vivid portrayal of life in rural England during the 19th century, with rich descriptions of the landscape, customs, and beliefs of the time. It is also a powerful exploration of the themes of love, loyalty, and redemption, as Mehalah struggles to find her place in a world that has rejected her.Between Mersea and the Blackwater were several flat hol ms or islands, some under water at high-tides, others only just standing above it, and between these, the winding waterways formed a labyrinth which made pursuit difficult. The traffic was carried on with an audacity and openness unparalleled elsewhere. Al though there was a coastguard station at the month of the estuary, on Mersea 'Hard, ' yet goods were run even in open day, under the very eyes of the revenue men. Each public-house on the island, and on the mainland near a creek, obtained its entire supply of wine and spirits from contraband vessels. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
