The Heavenly Twins - Madame Sarah Grand - Bog

Bag om The Heavenly Twins

The Heavenly Twins is a novel written by Madame Sarah Grand, an Irish feminist writer, and published in 1893. The book tells the story of two identical twin sisters, Angelica and Diavolo, who were born into a wealthy English family. Despite their physical resemblance, the sisters have vastly different personalities and interests. Angelica is a well-behaved, conventional young woman who dreams of marriage and motherhood, while Diavolo is rebellious and unconventional, with a passion for art and a desire for independence. As the sisters grow older, their differences become more pronounced, and they find themselves increasingly at odds with each other. Angelica becomes engaged to a wealthy young man named Sir George, while Diavolo falls in love with a struggling artist named Harry. The two sisters' romantic entanglements lead them down very different paths, with Angelica settling into a comfortable but unfulfilling marriage, and Diavolo pursuing her artistic dreams despite the disapproval of her family.Throughout the novel, Grand explores themes of gender roles, social class, and the limitations placed on women in Victorian society. She also delves into the complexities of sisterhood and the ways in which family dynamics can shape individual identity. The Heavenly Twins was a groundbreaking work in its time, and is still considered an important feminist novel today.1893. Frances Bellenden Clarke was born in Ireland. She married a widowed army surgeon, Chambers McFall, with whom she had one son. They traveled extensively in the Far East. As a New Woman novelist, she became a leading figure in late nineteenth-century feminism of social and moral purity. In 1890 she left her husband, who did not support her ideas and in 1893 she changed her name to Madame Sarah Grand. That year Heinemann published The Heavenly Twins, which immediately became a controversial bestseller in England and the United States. This triple-decker novel in deploring sexual ignorance and hypocrisy in marriage gave a disturbing depiction of a syphilitic wife and baby. The eponymous twins, Angelica and Diablo, served to question gender roles; The Tenor and the Boy is a cross-dressing episode. Contents: Childhoods and Girlhoods; A Maltese Miscellany; Development and Arrest of Development; The Tenor and the Boy-An Interlude; Mrs. Kilroy of Ilverthorpe; and The Impressions of Dr. Galbraith. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
