'By opening this book, you've given Patricia Highsmith permission to follow you, catch you, take you apart. Get ready to run' Carmen Maria MachadoPatricia Highsmith was one of the great twentieth-century fiction writers, celebrated for classics The Talented Mr Ripley, Carol and Strangers on a Train, but she was also a masterful and prolific short-story writer. This definitive collection, featuring two stories that have never been published before, reveals Highsmith as a genius of the genre. Peerlessly disturbing, exhilarating and brutally funny, Highsmith's stories are as relevant and startling today as when they were first written, presenting a world that is frightening, familiar and brimming with menace.'Every story shimmers like a dark gem as Patricia Highsmith turns her gimlet eye on domesticity, suburban madness, toxic families and the loneliness of childhood. Often mordantly funny and always psychologically acute, this collection is not to be missed' Megan Abbott 'I love Highsmith so much . . . What a revelation her writing is' Gillian Flynn
"Everyone has heard the whispered tales of the phantom who lives beneath the opera house, the mysterious trickster behind all the little mishaps and lost things. But no one has ever seen the monster . . . until now. When the promise of blossoming love lures him out from his intricately constructed hideaways in the labyrinthine building's walls and cellars, a hideously disfigured artist trains the lovely Christine to be the opera's next star for a steep price. Does she choose her newfound success or her beloved Count Raoul? This doomed love triangle threatens to combust when a tragic death, a series of betrayals, and increasingly dangerous accidents cast the players of The Palais Garnier into a heart-wrenching horror story that will echo through the ages. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, the iconic gothic romance, is retold with all the spectacle its legend demands in this devoted graphic novel adaptation that marries stunning artwork with Gaston Leroux's haunting prose."--Provided by publisher.

Robert William Chambers (1865-1933) was an American illustrator and writer, best known for The King in Yellow, his influential and odd collection of ten macabre and French short stories first published in 1895. The title refers to a fictional play featured in four of the stories, and to a mysterious and malevolent supernatural entity within that play who may very well exist outside of it. It is whispered that the play leaves only insanity and sorrow in its wake; it tempts those who read it, bringing upon them hallucinations and madness . . .Influencing the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Raymond Chandler, George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Nic Pizzolato (creator and writer of HBO's True Detective), and described by critics as a classic in the field of the supernatural, The King in Yellow - with its dashes of fantasy, mystery, mythology, romance, and science fiction - is a staple of the early gothic and Victorian horror genres.

THE KING IN YELLOW Robert W. Chambers was influenced by Ambrose Bierce and hailed by H. P. Lovecraft. He inspired such authors as Clark Ashton Smith, A. Merritt and Sax Rohmer. His works have been anthologized over the years in horror collections and his stories praised by such editors as Lin Carter, Hugh Lamb, Sam Moskowitz and Stephen Jones. Inspired by the Decadents, Chambers wrote about poisonings of the soul—taintings of the spirit—generating what Lovecraft referred to as “cosmic fear.” It started with The King in Yellow, a collection of vaguely connected stories tied together by a forbidden book, the reading of which induces madness in its readers. Written in 1895 while the author was a young artist in Paris, these stories exude a true Gothic sense, steeped in darkness and decay. THE MYSTERY OF CHOICE The Mystery of Choice from 1897 collects further tales of suspense and unease, also loosely connected by its characters and mood. But unlike the foreboding gloom that pervades the stories of The King in Yellow, the supernatural tales in The Mystery of Choice are lighter in tone, set more in the outside world—the world of nature—and offer an interesting contrast to the earlier collection. This volume forms part one of “The Complete Weird Fiction of Robert W. Chambers.”
