La Crosse, Wisconsin was an innocent small community in 1953. Equally innocent was bright, young babysitter Evelyn Hartley. But, someone came in and snatched her while she was baby-sitting and she was never seen again. This story still haunts La Crosse sixty years later, with just about everyone holding a theory about what happened to her or a story about how they were affected by her disappearance and presumed murder. There was no CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News then. In fact, La Crosse did not even have its own TV station. Still, the national media descended on the city just like they do today. This book includes crime scene photos and newspaper articles during the time when the issue was still hot.

A murderous atmosphere pervaded nineteenth-century America and lurid murders dominated newspaper headlines. The Bloody Century retells the stories of Americans, driven by desperation, greed, jealousy, or an irrational bloodlust, to take the life of someone around them. It presents 50 of the most intriguing murder cases from the archives of American crime including: The FamousLizzie BordenH H HolmesThe Bloody BendersThe SensationalJesse Pomeroy - 14-year-old serial killerAdolph Luetgert-dissolved his wife in a vat of lyeLydia Sherman-poisoned her husband and nine othersThe UnsolvedRose Ambler - found stabbed in a field near her homeBenjamin Nathan-beaten to death in his bedroomand many others. Richly illustrated with scenes and portraits from the time of the murders, and including songs and poems written to commemorate the crimes, The Bloody Century invokes a fitting atmosphere for Victorian homicide. The days of America's distant past, the time of gaslights and horse-drawn carriages, are often viewed as quaint and sentimental, but a closer look reveals passions, fears, and motives that are timeless and universal, and a population inured to violence, capable of monstrous acts. A visit to The Bloody Century may well give us insight into our own.
In this first volume, Scott K. Murphy dives into five of the most violent, deadly and shocking shootouts in the American modern history:1. February 28, 1997: The North Hollywood Shootout between two heavily armed bank robbers and officers of the Los Angeles Police Department.2. April 20, 1999: The Columbine High School Massacre committed by the two disturbed students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and claimed the life of 12 innocent students and one heroic teacher.3. February 24, 2005: The Smith County Courthouse Shootout perpetrated by gunman David Hernandez Arroyo, Sr. who decided to opened fire on his ex-wife and 22 year-old son.4. March 21, 2005: The Red Lake Massacre committed by 16-year old Jeff Weise; a massacre 10 people lost their lives, including the shooter.5. October 2, 2006: The devastating Amish School Shooting perpetrated by the disturbed Charles Carl Roberts IV who shot, execution-style, five young girls, aged 6 to 13, before killing himself.
Diane sought out retribution in life. Abandoned, abused and neglected, she managed to find her place in the world. But no matter how hard she tried to belong, someone would always piss her off; her awakening into life would always require the taking of someone else's life, mostly men. Their death was the awakening of her carnal desires and the more she satisfied those needs the more she wanted. Her murderous routine became an art form and the release of the burning sensation she carried would grow and need to be replenished frequently.

Clotaire Chantal is opposed by Raulf Beautrelet, a young but gifted amateur detective, who is still in high school but who is poised to give Clotaire Chantal a big headache. In the Clotaire Chantal universe, the Needle is the second secret of Marie Antoinette and Alessandro Cagliostro, the hidden fortune of the kings of France. The Mystery of The Needle hides a secret that the Kings of France have been handing down since the time of Julius Caesar... and now Clotaire Chantal has mastered it. The legendary needle contains the most fabulous treasure ever imagined, a collection of queens' dowries, pearls, rubies, sapphires and diamonds... the fortune of the kings of France.
Tommy Connolly has a lot to figure out: what caused the bullet holes in his back and scull; where was he before they put him in that empty barracks; why they ordered him to be packed in a small plane and flown to Aruba; and who was the siren who cared for him after he awoke in that hospital. Above all, who are "they" exactly? To get some answers, Tommy will have to play high-stakes games among nefarious characters in Panama, Aruba, Bermuda and Cali, Colombia. He will have to make nice with corrupt Colombian intelligence officers, befriend crooked bankers and dried-out CIA pilots for-hire, and even turn a blind eye to hideous crimes against innocent Columbians. To live another day, he will have to lead the sort of top-secret operations that CIA regulars wouldn't touch. Some of the things he learns will gratify him, while others will mortify him. He'll face certain death, but his success will make him a rich gringo. Your Enemies Know You Best is a story about the thin line between friends and enemies, and the sort of knowledge that brings you peace, and the knowledge that can drive you mad. If you manage to live that long.

File updated July 1, 2017Joe Gere said he died on the afternoon his twelve-year-old daughter Brenda disappeared. It was left to Brenda's mother Elaine to sustain her stricken family, search for her missing child, and pressure the authorities for justice. From the first minutes of the investigation, suspicion fell on Michael Kay Green, a steroid-abusing "Mr. Universe" hopeful, but there was no proof of a crime, leaving police and prosecutors stymied.Tips and sightings poured in as lawmen and volunteers combed the Cascades forest in the biggest search on Northwest history. Years passed with no sight of the blue-eyed girl or the bright clothes she'd worn on the day she disappeared, but Elaine remained undaunted.Salt of the Earth is the true story of how one woman fought and triumphed over life-shattering violence and how she healed her family-and herself.Salt of the Earth is the true story of a courageous woman who survived a hellish twentieth-century nightmare. Mob violence, injustice, kidnapping, murder, and suicide were the black holes in the awful astronomy of Elaine Gere's life. Somehow she had to summon the courage to endure: to honor her beloved dead and to rebuild the shattered lives of the sons who depended on her strength. Jack Olsen has been lauded for his psychological insights into the most violent criminals in such previous masterworks as Doc, The Misbegotten Son, and Predator, but he has never overlooked their victims. By viewing the world through the eyes of Elaine Gere and her devastated family, he finds the core values that enabled them not only to survive and flourish, but, in the end, to triumph.Gilbert Taylor: In the annals of humanity, the Gere family is unexceptional and ordinary--unless one looks as closely at their lives as Olsen does. A boomer-age couple, Joe and Elaine Gere move between California and Idaho a dozen times on their roller coaster ride of solvency and bankruptcy and have three children. Much the steadier spouse, energetic Elaine always manages to land a clerical federal job wherever Joe moves the family. The wanderlust ensues from Joe's first career misfortune, as a cop disabled during a melee with a mob. His relatives thought that incident started his slide toward suicide, and his addictive (regrets of hitting her and promises to reform) abuse of Elaine demonstrates the complexity of Joe's insidious demons. But he holds on, Elaine remaining loyal, until another bolt from the blue--the kidnapping and murder of their 12-year-old daughter. Here Olsen is at his dispassionate, yet concerned, best, introducing the subplot of the suspect's life (a wife beater), the course of the investigation, and the ultimate denoument of the case. In this mass-media age, many women will identify with, and perhaps be inspirited by, Olsen's fine chronicle of the Gere family.
The racy jambalaya of war stories, anecdotes, observations and comments was gleaned from street cops all over New Orleans... America's most exotic and romantic city. Offbeat stories and comments from patrolmen, narcs, detectives, deputy sheriffs and state troopers are mixed with little known facts, forming a spicy Creole gumbo. As one NOPD old-timer remarked, "Some of these stories will make you laugh out loud. Others will bring tears to your eyes." Written by veteran cop, James Prine, The Real Police is not for the squeamish, and it cheerfully thumbs its nose at 'political correctness.' These true stories are the part of police work cops usually keep to themselves. If you're a street cop, or if you've ever wanted to be one... This book is for you.

This book provides an explanation of Crime Stoppers and tells how programs operate around the world. Created in 1976 by Greg MacAleese, an Albuquerque, New Mexico detective, to solve the slaying of a 19-year-old college student, the concept has grown to a global network of independent Crime Stoppers programs dedicated to improving security in communities and keeping streets safe. These volunteer grass root organizations maintain telephone tiplines where callers can anonymously report information that will help police solve crime. Rewards, raised through donations from the public, are available if a tip leads to an arrest. The book also outlines the value of School Crime Stoppers programs and reveals what world leaders and top law enforcement officials have said about the crime solving network. In addition to highlighting crimes that have been cleared through tips to Crime Stoppers, the book incorporates several cases that police agencies around the world are anxious to solve. Among them the strangulation slaying of 16-year-old Chanel Petro-Nixon who vanished from her family's Brooklyn, New York apartment on Father's Day in 2006; the June 2011 mysterious disappearance of 19-year-old Shizelle Hernandez while on basic training with the Air Guard in Trinidad; the abduction and murder of 14-year-old Aielah Saric-Auger in Prince George, British Columbia, one of several hundred aboriginal females who have gone missing in Canada through the years and the 13 victims of what police in South Australia call the Child Murder Cases occurring between 1966 and 2000. Also highlighted is the effort by Crime Stoppers to track down poachers in South Africa and prevent the slaughter of rhinos, one of the world's most endangered species.

The purpose of this volume 1 of 2 in this book is to unravel the linkage between intra-racial crime and violence among African-Americans and its nature or intrinsic and nurture or extrinsic causes. The biological (genetic) factors are examined and weighed against environmental factors learned from society and way of life, imposed and/or chosen. Other factors like proximity between victims and perpetuators are weighed. Assessments are made on whether the crime and violence imposed on blacks by blacks is significantly more threatening to society than white-on-white crime. Race is perused as a factor in black crime and violence. Distinctions are made between blue- and white-collar crimes and socioeconomic factors and values. The role of intergenerational trauma experienced from systemic and implicit racial bias and animus is perused. The impact of self-hatred and "Stockholm Syndrome" are weighed as a factor in predatory attitudes towards blacks by blacks. The linkage to conservative politics in violation of the interest of one's own race, family, and community is assessed. In addition to the generational and societal predilection to commit black-on-black crime, the drug trade and its destructive consequences are examined as a "War on Blacks." The examination takes this volume to the stairway of where drugs and guns are financed and imported into black communities. In its poorest communities, this dilemma is taken in context to the drug trade being the most viable but illegal business and employer where employment and income is extremely scarce.
