Die Lutherdenkmäler des gesamten 19. Jahrhunderts werden in dieser Arbeit erstmals historisch eingeordnet und gedeutet. Auf Basis eines umfangreichen Quellenmaterials wird herausgearbeitet, wie Luther zwischen dem 300. und 400. Reformationsjubiläum im Medium Denkmal erinnert wurde. Die Planung, Gestaltung und Einweihung der Standbilder geben Aufschluss darüber, wie politische, gesellschaftliche und kirchengeschichtliche Ereignisse die jeweilige Erinnerung an den Reformator beeinflussten. Die Lutherdenkmäler werden in vier, zeitlich aufeinanderfolgende Phasen eingeteilt, um Entwicklungslinien dieses Mediums bestimmen zu können. So war bis zur Entstehung des deutschen Nationalstaats die Diskussion bestimmt von der Etablierung eines bestimmten Lutherdenkmaltypus. Im Zuge des Lutherjubiläums 1883 kam es zu einem regelrechten Denkmalboom im öffentlichen, städtischen Raum. Es folgte eine dezidiert protestantische Profilierung des Standbilds um die Jahrhundertwende und durch die zunehmende Denkmalkritik und die Kriegsgeschehnisse ist um 1917 ein Neuansatz in der Denkmalkultur Luthers feststellbar. Die Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Denkmalforschung, Lutherrezeption und protestantischen Erinnerungskultur des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Hermann Dörries (1895-1977) lehrte und forschte als Kirchenhistoriker in verschiedenen politischen Kontexten, vom wilhelminischen Kaiserreich über die Weimarer Republik und den Nationalsozialismus bis zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Bis heute vor allem als Experte für das spätantike Mönchtum bekannt, widmete er sich auch der Erforschung des Frühmittelalters und der Theologie Luthers. Wie schlugen sich die politischen, gesellschaftlichen und akademischen Umwälzungen des 20. Jahrhunderts in seinem Werk nieder, wie kam Dörries zu seinen Themen, und wie deutete er mittels historischer Forschung das Zeitgeschehen? Der vorliegende Band nimmt Leben und Werk von Hermann Dörries in Form von biographischen und thematischen Einzelstudien in den Blick; er fragt auch nach akademischen Netzwerken über konfessionelle, nationale und politische Grenzen hinweg und dem sich im 20. Jahrhundert fundamental wandelnden Verhältnis von Kirche und Universität. Die Beiträge zeichnen insgesamt ein differenziertes und detailliertes Bild dieses einflussreichen Wissenschaftlers vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert.

The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive 'map of agency' of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner. Behind this approach lies the desire to broaden the perspective of Ecclesiastical History - and religious history in general - in a more systematic manner by questioning the traditional criteria of selection. This might help us to recover previously lost actors and forgotten dynamics.

Nonnus' Paraphrasis, an epic rendition of the Fourth Gospel, offers a highly sophisticated interpretation of the Johannine text. An essential means to this end is extensive use of the imagery related to Greek, and especially Dionysiac, mysteries. Doroszewski successfully challenges the once predominant view that the mystery terminology in the poem is nothing more than rhetorical ornament. He convincingly argues for an important exegetical role Nonnus gives to the mystery terms. On the one hand, they refer to the Mystery of Christ. Jesus introduces his followers into the new dimension of life and worship that enables them to commune with God. This is portrayed as falling into Bacchic frenzy and being initiated into secret rites. On the other hand, the terminology has a polemical function, too, as Nonnus uses it to present the Judaic cult as bearing the hallmarks of pagan mysteries. As the book discusses the Paraphrasis against the background of the mystery metaphor development in antiquity, it serves as an excellent introduction to this key feature of the ancient mentality and will appeal to all interested in the culture of Imperial times, especially in Early Christianity, Patristics, Neoplatonism and Late Antique poetry.

Bei der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich um die Übersetzung ins Deutsche und den theologisch-historischen Kommentar einer sehr wichtigen kontrovers-theologischen Schrift des frühen Mittelalters, die "Mystagogie des Hl. Geistes" des Patriarchen Photios von Konstantinopel, die in der Forschung als Flaggschiff der orthodoxen Kritik gegen den Ansatz des Filioque gilt. Bis dato war das Fehlen einer Übersetzung und eines ausführlichen Kommentars dieser zentralen Schrift ein Desiderat für die historisch-dogmatische Forschung. Neben der Mystagogie widmet sich die Studie auch der Analyse dreier der Mystagogie zum Thema Filioque vorausgehenden Schriften: a) Die Enzyklika von 867, b) den Horos der Synode von 879/80 und c) den Brief an den Erzbischof von Aquileia. Damit biete die Studie einen umfassenden Einblick in die Problematik der Frage des Hervorgangs des Hl. Geistes im 9. Jh. Die Studie versucht eine Brücke zwischen West- und Ostkirche zu bauen, indem sie versucht, einem westlich orientierten theologischen Publikum die orthodoxe Position zum Thema des Filioque näher zu bringen und sie eingehend zu erläutern.

This volume presents a novel and distinct contribution to previous research on the rich Lutheran heritage of music. It builds upon a current surge of interest in the field, which resonates with a wider interest in connections between music and religion, as well as with cultural and aesthetic dimensions of faith at large. The book situates the topic in relation to recent developments within historical and cultural studies that have developed a more nuanced and positive view of the interplay between theologians and other cultural agents in the evolution of Western modernity during post Reformation processes of 'confessionalization'. It combines conceptual discussions of key terms relevant to the study of the development and significance of an Early Modern Lutheran Music Culture with theological readings of central texts on music, analytic approaches to historical repertoires and material perspectives on its dissemination.

Numerous studies have analyzed the New England Puritan persecution of dissenters in the 17th and 18th centuries. This book examines the emergence of religious toleration by revisiting the circumstances leading to the first ordination of a Baptist by a Congregationalist in 1718. The event prefigured the work of John Callender (1706-1748), Baptist pastor and historian, whose life and work contributed to religious toleration in New England.

This monograph tracks the development of the socio-economic stance of early Mormonism, an American Millenarian Restorationist movement, through the first fourteen years of the church's existence, from its incorporation in the spring of 1830 in New York, through Ohio and Missouri and Illinois, up to the lynching of its prophet Joseph Smith Jr in the summer of 1844. Mormonism used a new revelation, the Book of Mormon, and a new apostolically inspired church organization to connect American antiquities to covenant-theological salvation history. The innovative religious strategy was coupled with a conservative socio-economic stance that was supportive of technological innovation.This analysis of the early Mormon church uses case studies focused on socio-economic problems, such as wealth distribution, the financing of publication projects, land trade and banking, and caring for the poor. In order to correct for the agentive overtones of standard Mormon historiography, both in its supportive and in its detractive stance, the explanatory models of social time from Fernand Braudel's classic work on the Mediterranean are transferred to and applied in the nineteenth-century American context.

This book will offer an account not so much of God's Providence an sich, but rather of divine providence as experienced by believers and unbelievers. It will not ask questions about whether and how God knows the future, or how suffering can be accounted for (as is the case in the treatments by William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, or J. Sanders), but will focus on prayer and decision-making as a faithful and/or desperate response to the perception of God as having some controlling influence. Diese Arbeit untersucht den offentlichen Diskurs im Amerika der Revolutionszeit und liefert ein besseres Verstandnis der Glaubenskommunikation und offentlichen Theologie Amerikas. Dabei nimmt sie die Grundsynthese aus Glaube und Freiheit ins Visier und fragt nach den religiosen Anteilen dieser Synthese. Diese Anteile werden nicht an eine kirchliche Lehre zuruckgebunden, sondern als Glaubenskommunikation im Revolutionsdiskurs gedeutet.Der erste Teil der Arbeit fragt anhand der Revolutionsdeutung Bernard Bailyns nach den mentalen Antriebskraften zur Revolution und arbeitet zunachst die Revolutionsepoche als zentrale Schaltstelle fur den weiteren Verlauf der Religionsentwicklung Amerikas heraus. Die Arbeit untersucht sodann die religiose Kommunikation im offentlichen Diskurs anhand von Texten zur sogenannten Bischofskrise (1769), zum Boston Massaker (1770) und in Gestalt traditioneller religioser Gattungen (1775/1776). Zudem werden die amerikanische Unabhangigkeitserklarung (1776), die Flugblatter mit denen die deutschen Soldaten zur Desertation aufgefordert wurden (1776) und die Kongressdebatte zur Bestimmung des neuen Nationalwappens (1776) analysiert.Der zweite Teil widmet sich zunachst der neuartigen Ausbalancierung von Theologie und Glauben zwischen offentlicher Ressource und privaten Grunduberzeugungen. Danach erfolgt eine Untersuchung der Theologie der wichtigsten Flugschrift der amerikanischen Revolution, Thomas Paines Common Sense (1776). Paine bezieht sich in seiner Argumentation auf zentrale biblische Erzahlungen. Fur Paine ist Amerika eine sakramentale Heilsgemeinschaft und die amerikanische Unabhangigkeit eine Folge des gottlichen Vorsehungshandelns. Die Arbeit befasst sich schlielich mit den Pfarrern Neuenglands, die mit ihren Predigten zu besonderen Anlassen massivst in den revolutionaren Diskurs eingriffen. In den Predigten der zumeist in Harvard und Yale ausgebildeten Pfarrer wird der Gott der Bibel und Vernunft als die allerletzte Quelle der Freiheit Amerikas bestimmt.Die Arbeit geht davon aus, dass nach dem Verschwinden des puritanischen Leitparadigmas nicht erst in der Zeit des Second Great Awakening, sondern in der Revolutionsepoche sich das Grundmuster des amerikanischen Zusammenspiels von Religion und Politik ausbildet, da es bereits bei der Loslosung vom englischen Mutterland zur alle weitere Entwicklung bestimmenden Verbindung von Freiheitsdenken und Gottesglaube kommt. Die Arbeit wendet sich auerdem gegen die Wahrnehmung der amerikanischen Revolution als vorrangig sakulares Ereignis.

It is estimated that only a small fraction, less than 1 per cent, of ancient literature has survived to the present day. The role of Christian authorities in the active suppression and destruction of books in Late Antiquity has received surprisingly little sustained consideration by academics. In an approach that presents evidence for the role played by Christian institutions, writers and saints, this book analyses a broad range of literary and legal sources, some of which have hitherto been little studied. Paying special attention to the problem of which genres and book types were likely to be targeted, the author argues that in addition to heretical, magical, astrological and anti-Christian books, other less obviously subversive categories of literature were also vulnerable to destruction, censorship or suppression through prohibition of the copying of manuscripts. These include texts from materialistic philosophical traditions, texts which were to become the basis for modern philosophy and science. This book examines how Christian authorities, theologians and ideologues suppressed ancient texts and associated ideas at a time of fundamental transformation in the late classical world.

This is the first biography in English of Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522), based upon the new critical edition of his correspondence. Reuchlin became most famous as the Catholic defender of Jewish books at the beginning of the 16th century, clarifying the Catholic Church's position toward the Jews. The book contributes to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Declaration on Relations with the Jews of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. While concentrated on the famous Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis, this book focuses on an area that has so far been somewhat marginalized or even overlooked by modern interpreters: the recontextualizing of the Passio Perpetuae in the subsequent reception of this text in the literature of the early Church. Since its composition in the early decades of the 3rd century, the Passio Perpetuae was enjoying an extraordinary authority and popularity. However, it contained a number of revolutionary and innovative features that were in conflict with existing social and theological conventions. This book analyses all relevant texts from the 3rd to 5th centuries in which Perpetua and her comrades are mentioned, and demonstrates the ways in which these texts strive to normalize the innovative aspects of the Passio Perpetuae. These efforts, visible as they are already on careful examination of the passages of the editor of the passio, continue from Tertullian to Augustine and his followers. The normalization of the narrative reaches its peak in the so-called Acta Perpetuae which represent a radical rewriting of the original and an attempt to replace it by a purified text, more compliant with the changed socio-theological hierarchies.

This volume explores the nature, quality and breadth of various types of episcopal relationships in order to understand how these relationships were established, cultivated and put to use across cultural, linguistic, social and geographical boundaries.

Sie enthalten Forschungen zur Kirchen- und Dogmengeschichte des Christentums aller Epochen, veroffentlichen aber auch Arbeiten aus verwandten Disziplinen wie beispielsweise der Archaologie, Kunstgeschichte oder Literaturwissenschaft. Kennzeichnend fur die Reihe ist der durchgangige Anspruch, historisch-methodische Prazision mit systematischen Kontextualisierungen des jeweiligen Gegenstandes zu verbinden. In jungerer Zeit erscheinen verstarkt Arbeiten zu Themen einer Kultur- und Ideengeschichte des Christentums in einem methodisch offenen christentumsgeschichtlichen Horizont.

This specialist work in historical theology deals with the doctrine of salvation in the early theology of Richard Hooker (1554-1600) from the perspective of the concept of faith and with Hooker's connections to the early English Reformers (W. Tyndale, J. Frith, R. Barnes, T. Cranmer, J. Bradford and J. Foxe) in crucial teachings such as justification, sanctification, glorification, election, reprobation, the sovereignty of God, and salvation of Catholics. The study proves that Hooker's theology is firstly Protestant (to counter the views which picture it as Catholic) and secondly Calvinist.

At the centre of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost (1667) is a radical commitment to divine and human freedom. This study situates Paradise Lost within the context of post-Reformation theological controversy, and pursues the theological portrayal of freedom as it unfolds throughout the poem. The study identifies and explores the ways in which Milton is both continuous and discontinuous with the major post-Reformation traditions in his depiction of predestination, creation, free will, sin, and conversion. Milton's deep commitment to freedom is shown to underlie his appropriation and creative transformation of a wide range of existing theological concepts.

Die intensiv diskutierte okumenische und systematisch-theologische Frage, ob der Heilige Geist allein aus dem Vater oder auch aus dem Sohn hervorgeht (ex Patre Filioque), wird kirchen- und dogmengeschichtlich analysiert. Ausgehend von der differenzierten Rezeption des Nizano-Konstantinopolitanums im lateinischen Sprachraum wird nach den Ursprungen der Filioque-Kontroverse zwischen dem 8. und 12. Jahrhundert gefragt. Dabei werden die pneumatologischen und bekenntnishermeneutischen Differenzen sowie die politischen und ekklesiologischen Rahmenbedingungen dargestellt. Der Streit um das Filioque erweist sich als Schlussel zu einer theologischen Divergenzbewegung zwischen griechischem Osten und lateinischem Westen, deren Ursprunge bereits in den trinitatstheologischen Grundentscheidungen des 4. Jahrhunderts liegen. Eine "e;Losung"e; der Filioque-Problematik ist daher nicht durch die Streichung eines Wortes zu erreichen, sondern nur im Dialog zweier irreduzibler Ausgestaltungen des trinitarischen Dogmas.

The author presents with this intellectual biography of the Lutheran alchemist Count Michael Maier an academic study of western esotericism in general and to the study of alchemy and rosicrucianism in particular. The author charts the development of Maier's Hermetic worldview in the context of his service at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II and Moritz of Hessen-Kassel. The problem of the nature of early Rosicrucianism is addressed in detail with reference to Maier's role in the promotion of this "e;serious jest"e; in the years immediately prior to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. The work is set in the context of ongoing debates concerning the nature of early modern alchemy and its role in the history of Western esotericism.
