This seventh volume of The Archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe must be seen as a sequel to the sixth. Both deal with kilns, kiln sites, and related technical matters. Number 6 was confined to the London area. Number 7 ranges further afield.

This published version of my thesis includes neither the Gazetteer of stray finds in England and Wales nor the Corpus of Tilustrations, which formed volumes II and IV respectively of the original work. It has proved possible to undertake only limited revision of the text and Corpus of Associations for the present publication. The nature of indigenous political and social structure was a key factor in Roman expansion. To facilitate conquest and incorpora­tion, existing political divisions and tendencies were exploited to the full. In the longer term, Rome usually adopted whatever it could intact, and adapted or altered only those features which ran counter to her interests.

The account of the Lexden Tumulus excavation is based as faithfully as possible on original archive material (the site.· notes, section drawings etc.), which have been preserved in Colchester Museum.

In 1982 this author published a preliminary study in the form a synthesis of two chronologically separated kilns (Peacey 1982, 3-17). The aims of this present work are to improve upon this framework; to establish how these type structures fit into the broader picture; to fill in the gaps, before, between and after these cameo views; to improve understanding of the technology employed and seek the roots from which such technology developed. The primary objective is to catalogue all relevant material known to exist in museum and private collections. It is hoped that by this means an understanding of the varied physical characteristics will lead to the establishment of object or function categories around which reports may be structured. Contemporary source documents are also examined to shed further light upon the likely function of the archaeological material.Among the results achieved are the compilation of an extensive catalogue of material associated with tobacco pipe kilns; the establishment of type series for pipe kiln furniture and furniture supplements; a proposed development sequence for pipe kiln muffles; a pattern of consistency in kiln design throughout the study area and details of the methods used for stem tipping.

Archaeologists have long known of the existence of antler and bone combs but understanding of their function and significance has advanced little beyond the initial identification of their Iron Age date and a traditional association with weaving. This thesis covers combs found in North and South Britain and Northern Europe. Volume I presents a survey of previous studies and interpretation of combs. Study of the wear patterns on the teeth, manufacture, style and decoration has been undertaken to see if variation can be related to tribal groupings, to the products of individual antler workers or to specific regions. The social and economic background of comb production and trade and exchange patterns of these small durable and personal artefacts have all been studied. There will be separate sections on North British combs which frequently differ in shape and material from those of South Britain and those found in Europe. The site is situated at the bottom of Melyd A venue, Prestatyn on a gentle southern slope extending down from the 15 m contour (NGR SJ 062817). Chester (DEV A) líes 39 km to the east and Caerhun (KANOVIUM) 28 km to the west.

The Vale of the White Horse is situated in north Wiltshire and south Oxfordshire between the chalk uplands of the Berkshire Downs and the ridge of Corallian sands that border the Upper Thames. Its name derives from the stylised outline of a horse.
