The introduction of The Way into the Conclusus has not had the effect Orlo desired-the people are divided, self-assignment has run rampant, and Elder Bednegraine's legion of enforcers are out of control. Gathering in secret, a group of protectors known as the Shamar have chosen Orlo to fix it. But in order to make the Conclusus work again, Orlo will have to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a friend, highjack a cartagon, and find the courage to travel into the deepest part of the Earth where unseen creatures known as wolves lurk in the darkness of the mines.
Boone Tackett's year is off to a bad start. He is confused by new visions, doesn't have a single class with his friends, and has to eat lunch alone. To make matters worse, he learns that a dark force is threatening the peaceful existence of the Mishpachah. When he finds that a mysterious leader with a bizarre secret has emerged among them, he is caught between defending his position in the garden and preventing chaos from overthrowing their way of life. With the assistance of the reclusive Binders, and an assignment that involves a society of misplaced collectors, Boone will have to pass through the darkness in order to save the garden and prove that he is not forgotten.
Boone Tackett has been sanctified. An eerie symbol has replaced the symbol of the leader on his clothing, a false prophet has convinced everyone that he is a traitor, and to add to all of the other changes in his life, his dad has taken a job in another state. When Boone is confronted by a group of wolves living in his world, he learns that the place he once loved has been turned upside down. With a new church and a group of uniquely gifted friends by his side, Boone will have to decide if returning to the garden to save his family from servitude is worth the possibility of destroying everything he once loved.
