As the French revolution begins, Pierre Debois and his African enforcer, Bebai, help King Louis escape from Paris. Pierre is the cousin of the king, but because of his association with the Paris gypsy clans he has been labeled an outcast. King Louis, in need of funds, makes Pierre governor of New Orleans and he instructs him to use any means possible to raise money for an army. Far away in the new world a young Indian boy named Manez is becoming a man. Unknown to him, he is the adopted son of the chief, a secret long kept because of a legend of an anointed one who will come and save the people of the earth from the white man. Arriving in New Orleans, Pierre corrupts everything around him with the help of his gypsy witch, Sabatha, and Debois's enforcers, the Darkwind. Encroaching on the Cheyenne tribe, they call a council to stop the dark wind that is coming. On his trip to the meeting, Manez gets attacked by a bear and accidentally falls into a cave where he meets the ghost of Sweet Medicine. Sweet Medicine tells him he is the chosen one then gives him the ancient magic of the Dog Soldiers. Pierre's gypsy witch sees the future in a dream, then tells Pierre he must stay away from Manez. As fate has it, they are destined to meet. This is Book One of a five part series.
