Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesuit theologian and scientist renowned for his pioneering field work in paleontology. His visionary writings on the reconciliation of faith and evolutionary theory aroused the suspicions of the Vatican and he was forbidden to publish on religious matters during his lifetime. After his death, the publication of his many books marked him as one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of this century -- a mystic whose holistic vision speaks with growing relevance to contemporary spirituality. Often considered ahead of his time, Teilhard's writings have more relevance and impact on our current times than when he was first published.

Pedro Arrupe, a Basque Jesuit, was superior general of the Society of Jesus from 1965 until 1983. Arrupe was instrumental in promoting a new mission for the Jesuits in terms of "faith that does justice." The readings here, beginning with his shattering eye-witness account of the bombing of Hiroshima, reveal a profound faith, a deep compassion, and an almost mystical devotion to Jesus.
Classic reflections on gospel wisdom from a modern martyr show the ongoing relevance of the gospel in an age of idolatrous power and capricious violence.
Presents the ideal entry to the cosmic and mystical spirituality of one of the great mystical teachers of our time, a living bridge between Western Christianity and the spiritual wisdom of the East.
Charles de Foucauld sought to proclaim the gospel not simply by his words but by his life. Living among the Muslim poor of Algeria, he sought to be a "universal brother", a witness to the love of God for all people. Though at the time of his violent death he had attracted no followers, his story later inspired the foundation of the Little Brothers and the Little Sisters of Jesus. This volume offers a poignant entry into the heart of a modern mystic and martyr.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is arguably the most beloved artist in the world. He was also an artist motivated by a deep spiritual vision - expressed first in his efforts to become a missionary and lay-minister and later, after his decisive break with organized religion, through his art. Through art he found a new way to express his solidarity and compassion for humanity, and to awaken people to the sacred depths of reality.
Thomas Berry (1914-2009) was a priest, a 'geologian, ' a historian of religions, and a philosopher. He was an early and significant Catholic voice awakening religious sensibilities to the environmental crisis. He is particularly well-known for articulating a 'universe story' that explores the world-changing implications of the new cosmology. Berry pointed the way to an ecological spirituality attuned to our place in nature and giving rise to an ethic of responsibility and care for Earth. This work, makring the centenary of his birth, offers an invaluable guide to one of the true prophets and spiritual masters of our time
