On a dark winter's eve in the midst of a fierce storm, a poor Texas family hunkers down in their sod shanty. When what should appear but Santy Claus in a wagon pulled by eight scruffy longhorns whose very colorful names give a hint to their contrary natures. After crash-landing Santa's wagon, the longhorns wreak havoc in this fun Christmas adventure. With a Santy so endearing he could charm the spines off a cactus, Texas Night Before Christmas has touched the hearts of generations and become an annual family tradition. Widely acclaimed as the South's leading children's illustrator, James Rice (1934-2004), lives through the more than 2.5 million books in print that feature his work--a record that ranks him with top children's authors and illustrators nationally. Rice wrote or illustrated fifty-five children's books with Pelican, receiving countless accolades and numerous awards. While this is an amazing achievement for any illustrator, it is particularly impressive since Rice was color-blind. His work demonstrates an inherent understanding of the interplay between darks and lights and reveals the creative genius of the artist's mind.

"An Emerald Isle version of the perennial poem."-New Orleans Times-Picayune"This cute children's book celebrates both the universality of spiritual experiences and the delights of discovering cultural differences."-New York Daily News'Round Christmastime, things are a little different on the Emerald Isle. Instead of logs thrown onto the fire, we find turf blazing bright. Instead of cold eggnog spiced just right, the mother and father are enjoying their stout. You'll find no Donner or Cupid or Blitzen, but Ould Neddy the donkey and his small cart. Father Christmas with his Irish eyes twinkling ushers in his seven elves, and thus begins the wondrous Irish Night Before Christmas. This humorous tale, in the same vein as the famous Cajun Night Before Christmas, is the Irish version of Father Christmas's yearly visit. Told in delightful brogue, it will have everyone wishing "Nollaig sona agut!'' (Merry Christmas to you!)Sarah Kirwan Blazek was born in county Wexford, Ireland, and retains dual citizenship in Ireland and the U.S. She is also the author of An Irish Hallowe'en and A Leprechaun's St. Patrick's Day. A retired elementary-school teacher, Ms. Blazek lives in Diamondhead, Mississippi. Widely acclaimed as the South's leading illustrator of juvenile books, James Rice is the illustrator and/or author of over sixty titles with over 1.6 million copies in print. Austin University, and a master of arts degree in education from Howard Payne College. He taught art and music at both the high-school and college levels and was a favorite speaker at schools, nursing homes, and community centers across the country. "The holiday-spirit-colored illustrations in this book will bring cheer to its readers." --Review of Texas Books "With its perky, full-color illustrations by James Rice and a breezy takeoff on the original, this is an entertaining tidbit to place beneath the tree." --Sanford (NC) Herald For the head nurse at Angel Hope General Hospital, Christmas Eve is anything but merry. Too many patients, too little help, and a crowded ER all threaten to make this night before Christmas one big headache. When the North Pole Rescue Team arrives, it becomes clear that there will be holiday cheer around the ward, stat! Saint Emergency Nick saves the day with eight helpful elves (certified RNs, of course), an ambulance-load of gifts, and well-deserved raises for the hospital staff. This updated holiday poem pays tribute to the hardworking men and women who take care of all of us--even on Christmas Eve. With a storyteller's charm, award-winning Texas author David Davis brings this tale of woe to a delightful conclusion. His other contributions to Pelican's Night Before Christmas Series include Librarian's Night Before Christmas, Redneck Night Before Christmas, and Trucker's Night Before Christmas. Now reissued in full-color! Santa Claus was doing all right Christmas Eve until he hit the Southwestern Panhandle country. As soon as he did, a blue norther sweeping across the prairies sent his reindeer fleeing for the comparative warmth of the North Pole. Santa--Stetsoned, booted, and bundled to his nose--stomped through the blizzard until he came to a small sod shanty and corral. A dim flicker of firelight came through the whistling cracks in the door. And so opens this Christmas book from the pen of James Rice, now available in full color for the first time. A seasonal treasure for both children and adults, Cowboy Night Before Christmas traces the unlikely teamwork of Santa, two freezing cowboys, and a bunch of longhorn cattle "a mite short on brains" as they struggle to ensure that Christmas does indeed come on schedule. A new twist on the classic Christmas poem, this book plays off of its Southwestern setting and the drawling dialect characteristic of this part of the country. With richly humorous illustrations by Rice--an artist well known for his delightful drawings--Cowboy Night Before Christmas is a welcome addition to any collection of Christmas tales and legends.
