In this wonderful collection of images, discover Port Huron as it once was. Although Port Huron is now referred to as the "Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes," its initial growth happened because it was a point where roads, rails, and water all met to create the center of commerce it became. Return to a time when people rode streetcars and interurbans, took day trips to Detroit on ships such as the Tashmoo and the Greyhound; when they worked and shopped in downtown stores; and when they lived in diverse ethnic neighborhoods such as South Park and the First Ward. Many of the postcards seen here were mailed at or near the beginning of the 20th century and were a way to communicate basic information between friends and family. These images have now returned to introduce a new generation to what Port Huron once was. In an age where e-mails instantly travel back and forth, it can be hard to imagine how those receiving these messages anxiously awaited what messages arrived with these penny postcards.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina have been a destination for seasonal visitors since Algonkian Indians hunted and fished on the islands. In 1584, English explorers arrived and before long were promoting the area as a land of natural abundance and beauty, pleasant weather, and kindly natives. Not much has changed in that respect. By the beginning of the 20th century, visitors and residents alike were using postcards to share the things that make the Outer Banks unique with family and friends in other places.

From workers' housing to the grand homes of industrialists, prosperous Hartford experienced an explosion of Victorian building that turned this capital city into a rich mixture of culture, beauty, and business. The capital of the insurance industry, Hartford was also home to the first public art museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum; the first municipal rose garden, Elizabeth Park; and colossal factories that produced Colt firearms, typewriters, sewing machines, and even the first automobiles. Victorian Hartford showcases the city's great architecture through historic images, some of which are the only evidence of the city's former grandeur, and provides glimpses into a world long gone.

New York City Subways traces the history of mass transportation in Manhattan and New York City's outer boroughs. Public transportation has long been vital to the city, with horse-drawn surface lines established by 1831 and elevated railroad lines constructed during the 1870s and 1880s. The concept of subways, railroads operating underground, originated in London in 1863 and was applied to New York City by 1904. This collection of vintage postcards brings you through the tunnels of the subway, onto the platforms of the long-gone els, and examines New York's renowned terminals, especially Grand Central and Penn Station.

Mount Rainier rises 14,410 feet above sea level and can be seen on any given day by over three million people and from over 100 miles away. It is America's fifth national park, established in 1899. The mountain is an active but currently dormant volcano. With 25 named glaciers, 50 smaller unnamed glaciers, and numerous perennial snowfields, Mount Rainier boasts the largest glacier system in the continental United States. In addition to the glacier zone, the park has alpine and subalpine forest and subtropical rain forest. Each zone has its own unique ecology of plants and animals. The vistas of and from the mountain are some of the most spectacular in all of the park system.

Though not incorporated as a city until 1857, Hamilton can trace its roots back to the founding of Fort Hamilton by Gen. Arthur St. Clair in 1791.Throughout its history, Hamilton has been "The Greatest Little City of its Kind in the World," "The Postmark of Distinctive Trademarks," and "Known in the World's Markets." In the time between the close of the Civil War and the beginning of World War II, the city thrived. Led by steadfast pioneers and industrious immigrants, Hamilton developed into a community where anything seemed possible along the banks of the Great Miami River. The images herein detail Hamilton from 1900 to the 1950s. From a bustling county seat and the hub of Midwestern industry to leisurely endeavors, from distinctive neighborhoods to the people who lived in them, and from local education to individual worship, the life of the city is captured by over 200 postcards of the day, most from the author's private collection.

"For centuries, Presque Isle served as a way station for Native Americans and explorers. Lumbering and shipping led to the development of wooding stations along the Lake Huron shore, where settlements emerged. The roads created by loggers eventually led to the building of resorts and hotels for tourists. Postcard History Series: Grand Lake and Presque Isle explores Burnhams Landing, the abandoned community of Bell, Presque Isles two renowned lighthouses, two youth camps, the new limestone mining industry at Rockport, and other important sites. Some 20th-century visitors bemoaned water that was too cold, fish that were not biting, journeys that were too long, or visits that were too short. Located in the Lehigh Valley along the Lehigh River, Bethlehem was founded by Moravian settlers in 1741. In 1845, the traffic on the Lehigh Canal convinced the Moravians to open the town to outsiders who could purchase their land and buildings. The former Moravian farmlands south of the river were soon developed into railroad lines, industrial mills, homes, and Lehigh University. One of the mills evolved into Bethlehem Steel, once the second-largest steelmaker in the United States.
