SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2005 is the latest version of the reporting technology from Microsoft. This book examines all of the technology that SSRS provides to design, author, render and deploy professional business reports to the Web or to the company intranet (in a variety of formats, from HTML to XML, PDF, or TIFF), with detailed examples at every step.It covers all of the new functionality present in the 2005 version, including the new management and business intelligence development studios, as well as the new report viewer controls and end-user reporting tools. It also contains significantly expanded chapters on business intelligence, along with a wealth of tips and workarounds for effective development with SSRS.The authors are both highly experienced with SQL Server and with business reporting in the medical industry, which is subject to rigorous HIPAA regulations and strict security. It is not their intention to evangelize the product or present "e;idealized"e; examples based on the simple built-in schemas. Instead, they take a hard, critical look at the technology and provide exactly what the reader needs to know to deliver effective reports. Their code examples are based on real, complex schemas and the need to deliver versatile, dynamic reports, as well as on strict security and performance requirements. In summary, this book will provide you with step-by-step guides, best practices, and real code examples covering all of the common Reporting Services tasks, including: A detailed overview of the reporting architecture and tools The new Report Definition Language Standard, which is XML-based and allows you to define reports in VS.NET Building effective queries for high-performance reporting Building custom .NET applications with SSRS Rendering reports to HTML, XML, PDF and Excel Deploying secure reports, using Windows authentication through Active directory Business Intelligence reporting using SQL Server Analysis Services

Pro DNS and BIND guides you through the challenging array of features surrounding DNS, with a special focus on BIND, the worlds most popular DNS implementation. This book unravels the mysteries of DNS, offering insight into origins, evolution, and key concepts like domain names and zone files. This book focuses on running DNS systems based on BIND 9.3.0 the first stable release that includes support for the latest DNSSEC (DNSSEC.bis) standards and a major functional upgrade from previous BIND 9 releases. If you administer a DNS system or are thinking about running one, or if you need to upgrade to support IPv6 DNS, need to secure a DNS for zone transfer, dynamic update, or other reasons, or if you need to implement DNSSEC, or simply want to understand the DNS system, then this book provides you with a single point of reference. Pro DNS and BIND starts with simple concepts, then moves on to full security-aware DNSSEC configurations. Various features, parameters, and resource records are described and, in the majority of cases, illustrated with one or more examples. The book contains a complete reference to zone files, Resource Records, and BINDs configuration file parameters. You can treat the book as as a simple paint-by-numbers guide to everything from a simple caching DNS, to the most complex secure DNS (DNSSEC) implementation. Background information is still included for when you need to know what to do and why you have to do it, and so that you can modify processes to meet your unique needs.
Database design is one of the most contentious issues in computer science. There is always a delicate balance to be struck between the strict academic rules that govern the design of relational databases and the real-world techniques that programmers apply to get the job done in a certain time frame. This book's goal is to coverfrom a "e;real-world"e; point of viewall of the essential elements in designing, modeling, and building efficient relational databases, while avoiding a dry, theoretical approach. Author Louis Davidson explains the process of implementing a databasefrom generating tables and allowing access to these tables using Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This includes tackling data modeling (focusing on the IDEF1X notation), requirements gathering, normalization (beyond the Third Normal Form), and implementing tables, constraints, triggers, procedures, user-defined functions, and so on. Davidson provides a full and realistic case study that clearly illustrates the entire process, from the initial discussions of a client's needs, through development of a logical model, to a complete implementation of the system.
The Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is a new easy way for Java developers to build Ajax web applications, using a simple system of "UI widgets," and it's gained a lot of popularity in the community. Google are pushing it very eagerly. There are a couple on Google Web Toolkit already, but this one goes further, teaching the ins and outs of developing with the Google Web Toolkit, before taking readers up to a higher level, including chapters on how to integrate GWT user interfaces with enterprise applications. It also includes reference sections at the end so readers can look up details quickly and easily.
Ruby is presently one of the most discussed programming languages in computing today, offering an array of capabilities similar to Python, but also boasting an extremely popular Web-based framework known as Ruby on Rails. Pro Ruby is the first book to presume the reader already possesses knowledge in language fundamentals, and accordingly attempts to guide the reader to an even higher level of proficiency by introducing advanced Ruby programming concepts alongside sound developmental strategy.Pro Ruby discusses a number of intermediate and advanced topics such as project planning and requirements analysis, object-oriented design, and Ruby-based patterns. The book also delves into somewhat more concrete matters such as GUI development, databases, XML, and running Ruby on Windows. Together, the book's contents offer an interesting blend of Ruby-slanted development theory and Ruby-specific advanced language instruction. TOC:Ruby and Enterprise Development.- Project Planning.- Requirements Analysis.- Object-Oriented Design - The Ruby Way.- Design Patterns.- Refactoring.- Automation.- Programming Techniques.- GUI Programming.- Working with Databases.- Working with XML.- Ruby on Windows.
Speech Server can be used to voice-enable many .NET applications. Because of the support for ASP.NET Server controls, virtually existing web based application can be speech enabled with relative ease. Adding in telephony is slightly more complex but those with a basic understanding of telephony will find it fairly straightforward. The truth is that it's almost impossible to get away from Speech and DTFM based applications. The reason is that companies can save tremendous amounts of resources but monetary and human by automating systems with Speech and Telephony. But the catch is that such applications need to be well constructed and need to work well with the users, allowing them to do things they otherwise wouldn't be able to do (like get bank account balances at 3:00 Christmas morning). Poorly designed or implemented systems, like all poorly designed/implemented systems simply add inconvenience to what users are already having to do. As such, understanding what Speech Server and the tools can and can not do is imperative. Understanding how to properly configure and secure such applications is even more critical because without this knowledge, even getting started on the application may be difficult to impossible. This book gives that knowledge to the user, like no other book that is or will be available. The expected length of the book will be approximately 500 pages with extensive examples and code provided (which is necessary in this context since most of the audience will probably have had little experience with the technologies before this book). The main reason I think there's an audience is because Speech is getting increasingly popular and there are no other books on the subject. TOC:Introduction to Microsoft Speech Technologies.- Microsoft Speech Server.- Telephony.- Speech Server without Telephony.- Building an automated receptionist using the Speech SDK.- Adding Telephony support.- Adding a web interface.- Adding support for Windows Mobile® and Windows Smartphone® Devices.- Tying it all together.
