The great and prosperous Empire of Cadaria finds itself at a crossroads. The venerable Emperor Ender 'Justhand' Lorien has succumbed to a plague engineered by the ancient malevolence known as Dorovar and his heralds of destruction. Into the spotlight steps the fallen father's oldest son, Kaitain, whose goals are incompatible with the peaceful mandate of the dearly departed ruler. All around him, Kaitain sees enemies and impediments to his prosperous rule, and to the dominion of the eternal Cadarian Empire. The dragons of Espre are the first of his targets, quickly followed by the enigmatic and misunderstood Dark Gods. However, Kaitain is not content in venting his frustrations on the enemies he sees arrayed around him. No, it's the supposed allies that concern him the most. The Academy of Arcane Arts found themselves quickly isolated from the love of the Imperial Court, and members of the Knights of the Flashing Blade, the Emperor's elite defense force, have been charged with treason on the eve of the Emperor's wedding. But it is not just the new Emperor of Cadaria that has declared war upon the Dark Gods. The dragons of Espre also want to see the end of the Dark Gods, as they see the end of the world of Espre being dragged inexorably closer by the escalating conflicts. But in the darkness of his prison, Dorovar waits for the opportunity to be free. His hand stretches forth through his heralds, sowing devastation on the innocent citizens of Cadaria. Dorovar's aim is to sacrifice the whole of Espre to create a choir of souls large enough to sing him into the Heavens where he will unseat the Creator and remake the whole of Creation in his own warped and hate-filled image. The overture fades and The Quietus of Fate series continues in Chorus of Change.
The capital of the Cadarian Empire has fallen, the Dark Gods' Citadel smolders from subterfuge and sabotage, and the Heart of Stone in Albitonin has been fractured at its foundation. Chaos reigns throughout the world of Espre, and the Heralds of the immortal Dorovar wreak havoc everywhere their footsteps fall. At the core of the crumbling Empire of Cadaria, a new horror stirs. Emperor Kaitain Lorien has awoken from his slumber, twisted and scarred by the machinations of the Children of the Creator. His vengeance against the rebels, the zealots, and his own wife and child could reduce the whole of the Cadarian Empire to ash, as the flashpoint of a civil war flares at a remote Academy. But there are echoes in the distance, echoes of hope. Deep in the Heart of Stone a hero takes her place on the battlefield of the immortals, and soon she will awaken into a conflict that she never dreamed could occur. Will the High Priestess of the Creator turn her back on everything she knows in an effort to save everything she loves? A Princess will follow her heart into the deepest and darkest pits of despair, where an unexpected light awaits. Will she sacrifice her ambition to achieve power that surpasses her wildest dreams? In the wilderness, brothers tangled in ancient prophecy will take all too familiar places in the growing conflict. Can this world support the weight of heroes and villains that burned the last worlds they fought upon? The battle for the soul of Espre and perhaps for the whole of Creation continues in The Quietus of Fate: Ashes and Echoes.
The greatest threat to the rule of the Creator has been loosed upon the face of Espre; Dorovar is free from his prison. His Heralds walk the face of Espre with impunity, killing indiscriminately, adding ever more voices to the Chorus of Souls that Dorovar believes will lift him to the Heavens and overthrow the Creator. Robbed of two of his Servants, the Creator strikes back against all those who would rise up against Him, including his treacherous Children. However, not all have the stomach for the continuing war, and heroes of old seek to break the cycle of violence by stepping away from the conflict and passing their burden to a new generation of heroes. Meanwhile, Aerith Seth begins his inevitable collision course with Dorovar, rallying unexpected allies to his side, and making new enemies along the way. Kaitain Lorien, the deranged Emperor of Cadaria has declared worship of the Creator to be illegal, and is determined to be the only deity for the people of his fragmented empire. Who will save the faithful and the faithless alike from the wrath of forces they cannot hope to understand? Will more heroes of old abandon their righteous path and lose faith in their appointed mission? Who will champion the cause of the light against the encroaching darkness? Beliefs are tested and new temptations rise in The Quietus of Fate: Effigies of Faith.
