Most of the volumes of the series "S????wasserflora von Mitteleuropa" are written in German language, the volumes 2/1 - 2/4 dealing with the Bacillariophyceae (diatoms) as well. They enable the user to identify all diatom-species and provide him with the taxonomic and ecological information. Since the number of the known diatoms-taxa has increased considerably it is extremely important to distinguish the different species. This was until now restricted to the limnologists, biologists and geographers capable of understanding the German language. This additional volume 2/5 presents all the dichotom keys from the Bacillariophyceae-volumes 2/1 - 2/4 in English and French translation. This volume covers the freshwater, aerophytic, and terrestrial green algae of the Ulvophyceae, one of the main classes of green algae. Although most of this diversity is found in the marine environment, a substantial number of species also occurs in brackish, freshwater, and aero-terrestrial habitats. This volume serves as a reference work for identifying these green algae by providing keys, detailed descriptions, and illustrations of the more than 100 European species, along with descriptions of more than 100 non-European taxa.The present study incorporates the latest findings in phylogeny, ultrastructure and morphology for the classification, and delimitation of species. In addition, it significantly revises the taxonomy of ulvophytes, based on new molecular phylogenetic data. One order and one family are resurrected (Chlorocystidales, Chlorocystidaceae), and one order and five families are newly described (Ignatiales, Ignatiaceae, Binucleariaceae, Planophilaceae, Hazeniaceae, Sarcinofilaceae, and Tupiellaceae).

Volume 7 of the series "Susswasserflora/Freshwater Flora of Central Europe" covers the freshwater red algae and brown algae of this region. This book is intended to aid both the algologists and applied researchers to correctly identify European freshwater algae using updated nomenclature.

Our determination keys and taxonomic descriptions should permit the identification of natural populations, and should be related to known culture material. The identification of strains without previous knowledge of natural material needs to be carried out with special care.

Im vorliegenden Band wird eine der formenreichsten Gruppen der Grünalgen, ihre Flagellaten-Organisation, zusammengefasst. Besondere Bedeutung wurde den Bestimmungsschlüsseln, den kurzen Diagnosen und besonders den Abbildungen zugesprochen, um eine Bestimmung des untersuchten Materials zu gewährleisten. Ein allgemeiner Teil zu den gesamten Chlorophyta ist vorangestellt, darin Erklärungen der allgemein verwendeten morphologischen und fortpflanzungsbiologischen Begriffe. Außerdem wird die neue Aufteilung, nicht nur der Phytomonadina, sondern auch aller Grünalgen begründet.Es sei nicht nur auf die Rolle der Chlorophyta in der Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser- und Nutzwasserbiologie, sondern auch in der allgemeinen Biologie hingewiesen. Viele Phytomonadina, die in Kultur gehalten werden, dienen als gesuchte Modellorganismen den zytologischen, physiologischen, genetischen und entwicklungsgeschichtlichen Forschungen.In diesem Band wurden auch Sippen außereuropäischer Gebiete mitberücksichtigt. Vor allem bei den Einzellern setzt man eine weitweite Verbreitung voraus. Nur bei der Gattung Volvox wurden die subtropischen und tropischen Arten ausgelassen. Sie werden jedoch wenigstens in einem Überblick angeführt, ebenso wie im Anhang zu den höheren Sippen die marinen oder salinen Gattungen und Arten.

This volume treats cyanobacterial types with diversified thalli, with the typical presence of prominent, specialized cells having specific functions (heterocytes, akinetes, hairs, necridia), complex life cycles, and a combination of various reproductive strategies (monocytes, hormogonia and hormocytes).

Cyanoprokaryotes are probably the oldest organisms with plant metabolism. However, their cell structure and type of asexual reproduction prove their eubacterial origin. They are able to colonize all possible biotopes, including very extreme environments (thermal springs up to 80 °C, rocks in extremely hot or cold deserts in both the tropics and Antarctica, hypersaline lakes and marshes, biotopes in volcanic regions, and other harsh habitats).This book was written for identification and standardization of known, morphologically and ecologically distinguishable European Cyanoprokaryotes that have been described from natural populations. In the introductory part only data important for identification practice are therefore included. At the end of this chapter we append a list of this basic literature, which comprises all the necessary detailed information. We have selected accurate drawings of described species.
