Volume 1 of The Cambridge History of Law in America begins the account of law in America with the very first moments of European colonization and settlement of the North American landmass. It follows those processes across two hundred years to the eventual creation and stabilization of the American republic.
Volume 2 of The Cambridge History of Law in America focuses on the long nineteenth century (1789-1920). It deals with the formation of the state system, the establishment of systematic legal education, the spread of the legal profession, developments in criminal justice and the growing density of legal institutions.
Volume 3 of The Cambridge History of Law in America covers the period from 1920 to the present. Starting with the period after World War I, this volume charts a century of legal transformations. It shows how, politically, socially and culturally, law became ubiquitous in American life.
Since the 1950s, American historians have produced an extraordinarily rich and diverse literature on the role of law and legal institutions in American life. The Cambridge History of Law in America synthesizes this knowledge, and is the most comprehensive and authoritative account possible of the history of American law.
