Despite the fact that many years have elapsed since the first microcalorimetric measurements of an action potential were made, there is still among the research workers involved in the study of bioelectrogenesis a complete overlooking of the most fundamental principle governing any biological phenomenon at the molecular scale of dimension.

This volume contains a selection of scientific papers related to the structure and dynamics of non-rigid molecules. More recently an International Symposium on Non-Rigid Molecules was held in Paris, France, from 1-7 July 1982, the proceedings of which were published in the volume entitled Symmetries and Properties of Non-Rigid Molecules.

New classes of reactive ion radicals have been detected and characterised since then, most notably cation radicals of saturated organic compounds. We have asked leading experts in the field to write separate chapters about cation radicals, anion radicals and trapped electrons as well as more complex systems of biological or technological interest.

The present volume gathers a series of selected and updated contributions presented at the International Symposium on Applied Theoretical Chemistry held in Havana, Cuba, July 2-6, 1990. Theoretical Chemistry has become a powerful tool of investigation in all areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physical Chemistry.

In this volume we have included some contributions among the plenary lectures, oral presentations and posters that have been presented at the 1st Joint Greek-Italian Meeting on "The Chemistry of Biological systems and Molecular Chemical Engineering" organized at Loutraki, Club Poseidon, Greece 1990. We hope similar meetings will follow every two years alternating between the two countries in order to strengthen the scientific ties among the scientists working in this field. The inter­ disciplary aspect of the meeting has been evident by the wide presence of scientists in bioinorganic, bio-organic, biological fields and molecular engineers who will get together and exchange ideas and experiences.
