This book explores Complex System Governance (CSG)-an emerging field concerned with the design, execution, and evolution of essential functions necessary to ensure continued viability of a system. The book focuses on three primary development areas to better understand and utilize current developments CSG. First, the conceptual foundations for CSG are developed, from systems theory, management cybernetics, and governance. Second, a set of critical CSG topics are examined from conceptual as well as practice perspectives. Third, several development and application issues are discussed. Ultimately, CSG is positioned as an emerging field with strong theoretical grounding and significant implications for improving practices and performance to better address complex systems and their problems.
This book directs the engineering manager or the undergraduate student preparing to become an engineering manager, who is or will become actively engaged in the management of economic-risk trade-off decisions for engineering investments within an organizational system.
In addition, it describes naphthenic acid corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen damages, sulfidic corrosion, microbiologically induced corrosion, erosion-corrosion, and corrosion fatigue occurring at refinery units.
This expanded second edition of the 2014 textbook features dedicated sections on action and observation, so that the reader can combine the use of the developed theoretical basis with practical guidelines for deployment.
This book addresses a key issue in today's society: the safer transport of dangerous goods, taking into account people, the environment and economics.
Cementitious materials are being widely used as solidification/stabilisation and barrier materials for a variety of chemical and radioactive wastes, primarily due to their favourable retention properties for metals, radionuclides and other contaminants.
The book contains solutions to fundamental problems which arise due to the logic of development of specific branches of science, which are related to pipeline safety, but mainly are subordinate to the needs of pipeline transportation.
With optimal management of water resources becoming ever more crucial, this book details the latest theories, and includes three real-life case studies of varying complexity that illustrate the practical aspects in differing fields of hydrosystem engineering.
This book presents the basics of stochastic, risk and uncertainty analysis and random sampling techniques using practical examples, solved step by step. Includes appropriate Excel functions as an alternative to solve the examples, and two real case studies.
This book lays the foundation for an integrated NGIOA risk governance framework, and makes a convincing case for the far-reaching need and understanding of global risk concepts, global risk fundamentals, and risk centric integrated NGIOA governance.
This book demonstrates that solar, wind and biomass power alone, while helpful, are incapable of supplying and sustaining the enormous quantities of electricity and heat needed for manufacturing portable synthetic fuels to replace current use of fossil fuels.
This book presents intellectual innovative information (I3) technologies based on logical and probabilistic (LP) risk models covering a range of systems and settings. Offers numerous applications demonstrating the effectiveness of risk management technologies.
Combining practical relevance and solid theoretical background, this volume gives readers the basic skills and tools of statistics and probability in the context of engineering modeling and analysis, focusing on ways of applying the methodologies.
The inclusion of the Human Viewpoint during the system architecting stage allows the evaluation of human-system design trade-offs, recognises the impact of the human operator on system performance, and provides the foundation for Human System Integration evaluations during the ensuing system development.
This study presents exploratory work and seeks to identify and evaluate the success and failure factors that could form a guideline for further study and to some extent help professionals to understand some critical aspects that impact project performance concerning construction in India.
This book offers engineering design and economic solutions for harvesting local and regional energy potential by means of solar, wind and hydro resources. Covers solutions, methods and techniques suitable for a large selection of renewable energy technologies.
Therefore the perennial derivations for systems such as complex systems, system of systems, federation of systems is no longer a sufficient descriptor for complex situation.
This comprehensive monograph addresses crucial issues in the protection of railway systems, with the objective of enhancing the understanding of railway infrastructure security.
Infranomics is a new discipline that combines sustainability, engineering, and issues of governance in infrastructure planning. This book offers a baseline for empirically driven discussion on the theory and potential applications of an important new subject.
