Im Jahre 1794 wurden in Dresden die Gipsabgüsse, die knapp zehn Jahre zuvor aus dem Nachlass Anton Raphael Mengs' für die Kunsthochschule angekauft worden waren, im Johanneum aufgestellt. Mit ihrer musealen Präsentation vollzog sich eine Transformation in der Bedeutung der Gipsabgüsse von einer preiswerten Kopie zu einem den Originalwerken ebenbürtigen Objekt. Ausgehend von diesem Ereignis wird in der Untersuchung die Entwicklung der Sammlung im 19. Jahrhundert rekonstruiert. Analysierte Reiseberichte, Zeitungsartikel und Besucherstatistiken heben ihre Bedeutung in der lokalen wie nationalen Museumswelt hervor. Insbesondere die Direktorate Hermann Hettners und Georg Treus erwiesen sich als Blütezeit des Museums. Während es Hettners Anliegen war, die Abgusssammlung gegenüber "Konkurrentinnen" wie den Abgusssammlungen im Neuen Museum in Berlin und im Crystal Palace in London zu behaupten, entwickelte Treu aus ihr ein Museum mit didaktischem Ausstellungskonzept. Seine plastischen Ergänzungen und Farbrekonstruktionen können als archäologische Pionierleistungen angesehen werden und die Ergebnisse seiner Forschungen gehören zum Teil bis heute zum Grundlagenwissen in der Klassischen Archäologie.

Der in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts an der römischen Kurie ausgetragene Streit zwischen den beiden Humanisten Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457) und Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Literaturdebatten der Vormoderne. Insgesamt acht Invektiven richteten beide Gelehrte gegeneinander und forderten jeweils die soziale Ächtung des anderen. Primärer Gegenstand der Auseinandersetzung bildeten ihre unterschiedlichen Auffassungen der lateinischen Sprache, was in der sich noch in der Experimentierphase befindlichen humanistischen Bewegung auf große Resonanz stieß. Ihre Mitglieder sahen sich zu einer öffentlichen Positionierung genötigt und beteiligten sich mitunter selbst an dem Disput. Die Studie bietet die erste systematische Untersuchung des Streits und arbeitet einerseits die divergenten literarischen Nachahmungsverständnisse der beiden Opponenten und andererseits die sozio-literarische Konfiguration des Disputs heraus, der die gesamte humanistische Bewegung mobilisierte. Der Beitrag beleuchtet einen durch den Streit ausgelösten Ausdifferenzierungsprozess, der für die Stabilisierung des Humanismus sowohl als eigenständiges soziales Feld als auch als Gedankengebäude von immenser Bedeutung war

It does so by tracing Antiquity's afterlife in various genres on the Iberian Peninsula. The book is a manifest for a special transformation and, moreover, continuation of antiquity in the so-called Middle Ages in Spain, going against the commonly held view that only the European Renaissance did justice to and came to the rescue of Antiquity. It describes how the Visigoths preserved classical Antiquity in the 6th and 7th century, how Roman influence manifests itself on the Portico de la Gloria of Santiago de Compostela, how the Iberian Peninsula was reluctant to adopt the European Gothic Art around 1200 and how the Catholic Kings went back to forms and ideas of late Antiquity around 1500. In doing so this book offers an alternative to the influential and, so far, widely accepted concept of the reception of Antiquity, which is Erwin Panofky's Principle of disjunction.

Die systematische Untersuchung von Ubersetzungen griechischer und lateinischer Autoren ist nach wie vor ein Desiderat. Ziel vorliegenden Bandes ist es zunachst, Studien zu ausgewahlten Ubersetzungscorpora vorzulegen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen deutsche Ubersetzungen von Sappho, Alkaios, Thukydides, Herodot, Cicero, Ovid, Petron und Apuleius vom Mittelalter bis in die Gegenwart. Diese Studien sind jeweils auf die Spezifika der Textcorpora zugeschnitten und untersuchen die Verfahrensweisen und Bedingungen des Ubersetzens in Abhangigkeit von Sprachenpaar, Gattung, Uberlieferungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte etc. Erganzend dazu wird in einem abschlieenden Beitrag nach den Grundlagen einer methodischen Fundierung von Ubersetzungsanalyse und -kritik gefragt, wobei schon vorliegende Modelle (vor allem aus Translatologie und Textlinguistik) auf ihre Anwendbarkeit fur Ubersetzungen antiker Literatur hin gepruft werden. In der Verbindung von Fallstudien und methodischer Arbeit werden Vorschlage zu Verfahrensweise und Terminologie der Ubersetzungsanalyse prasentiert, die kunftigen Arbeiten auf dieser inter-disziplinaren Schnittstelle zwischen Ubersetzungswissenschaft, Alt- und Neuphilologie als Anregung und Ansatzpunkt dienen konnen.

Die zentrale Frage des Bandes lautet, was es bedeutet, wenn eine Handlung als nicht unmoglich, aber auch als nicht notwendig anzusehen ist. Das Transformationskonzept wurde bisher nahezu ausschlielich von den Akteuren und ihren Intentionen her gedacht, die als Ausgangspunkt und Grundlage historischen Sinns und moglicher Ordnungen des Wandels angesehen wurden. Demgegenuber wurden Zufalle lediglich als Symptome eines mangelnden Wissens verstanden, denen ein eigenstandiges Handlungspotenzial nicht zukommt. Im Gegensatz dazu wird in dem Band erkundet, - ob und in welcher Weise Transformationen von Zufallsfunden, unbeabsichtigten Nebenfolgen oder uberraschenden Wendungen bestimmt sind, -welchen Transformationen die contingentia selbst unterliegt, die in ihrer Verbildlichung (als Tyche, Fortuna u. a.), aber auch in ihrer historischen Semantik in Theologie und Philosophie seit der Antike bis in die jungste Gegenwart bemerkenswerten Veranderungen unterlag, -welcher spezifische Umgang mit Kontingenz in sozialen und politischen Prozessen, aber auch in Literatur und Kunst zu beobachten ist. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei die Unterscheidung von Risiko und Gefahr (Luhmann).

Der Band Imagination, Transformation und die Entstehung des Neuen hg. von Cornelia Wilde, Philipp Brullmann und Ursula Rombach untersucht auf Basis des Transformationskonzepts des SFB 644 Transformationen der Antike in 12 interdisziplinaren Beitragen, die von der Philosophie uber Anglistik und Musikgeschichte zur Kunstgeschichte und Architektur reichen, die Rolle der Imagination bei der Genese des Neuen in Prozessen der Antiketransformation. Den Ausgangspunkt bilden zwei wesentliche Zusammenhange zwischen Imagination und Transformation: Einerseits lasst sich unser modernes Verstandnis von Imagination als Ergebnis einer Antiketransformation lesen. andererseits stellt die Imagination eine zentrale Produktivkraft in Transformationsprozessen dar. Mit seinen interdisziplinaren Fallbeispielen richtet sich der Band an Altertumskundler, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler, Philosophen, sowie Musik-, Kunst- und Architekturhistoriker.

Die Jugendübersetzungen antiker Lyrik von J. H. Voß entstanden im Wechselspiel mit seiner frühen dichterischen Produktion, waren aber ansatzweise bereits dem normativen Antike-Ideal verschrieben, welches Voß'wirkungsmächtigen Homer-Übersetzungsarbeiten zugrunde lag. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Genese des Voß'schen Übersetzungswerkes und beleuchtet ihre Verknüpfung mit den literaturgeschichtlichen Konstellationen im ausgehenden 18. Jh.

Liebe und Freundschaft können beide als Ausprägungen des selben Phänomens, der Intimität, verstanden werden. Sie repräsentieren bestimmte Formen der Kommunikation, denn nichts scheint dringlicher, wenn man sich mit ihnen beschäftigt, als die Frage, wie man auf diesen Wegen eine Zuneigung ausdrücken kann. Als wäre dies nicht schon komplex genug, unterliegen diese Kommunikationsformen einem durch zahlreiche Faktoren beeinflussten historischen Wandel, der Liebe und Freundschaft als getrennte Lebensmodelle ausdifferenziert. Dieser langwelligen Transformationskette soll die Arbeit am Beispiel mittelalterlicher und frühneuzeitlicher Übertragungen von Vergils 'Aeneis' auf den Grund gehen.

Beyond Reception applies a new concept for analyzing cultural change, 'transformation', to the study of Renaissance humanism. The new theory stresses the active role played by the later culture in receiving and interpreting the classical past, with essays applying this methodology to Renaissance grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry, and philosophy. The volume proposes new answers to several old questions and suggests paths for new research.

The essays in this volume shed new light on the role of antiquarianism in Scandinavia in the 17th and 18th century. Das Übersetzen der Komödien des Aristophanes gilt nicht zuletzt wegen der gattungstypischen obszönen Scherze als schwierig. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die übersetzungstheoretische und -praktische Auseinandersetzung von insgesamt elf deutschsprachigen Übersetzern und Bearbeitern mit der Obszönitätsthematik am Beispiel der Komödie Lysistrate. Zudem wird eine systematische Übersicht über die identifizierten Übersetzungsstrategien geboten.

This volume sheds new light on the formative phase of Scandinavian scholarship shaped by Olof Rudbeck's baroque history of the world, 'Atlantica' (4 vols, 1679-1702).

¿Rewriting¿ is one of the most crucial but at the same time one of the most elusive concepts of literary scholarship. In order to contribute to a further reassessment of such a notion, this volume investigates a wide range of medieval and early modern literary transformations, especially focusing on texts (and contexts) of Italian and French Renaissance literature. The first section of the book, "Rewriting", gathers essays which examine medieval and early modern rewritings while also pointing out the theoretical implications raised by such texts. The second part, "Rewritings in Early Modern Literature", collects contributions which account for different practices of rewriting in the Italian and French Renaissance, for instance by analysing dynamics of repetition and duplication, verbatim reproduction and free reworking, textual production and authorial self-fashioning, alterity and identity, replication and multiplication. The volume strives at shedding light on the complexity of the relationship between early modern and ancient literature, perfectly summed up in the motto written by Pietro Aretino in a letter to his friend the painter Giulio Romano in 1542: "Essere modernamente antichi e anticamente moderni".

What role do rulers play in historical texts and what determines the way they are portrayed? This volume explores these themes, considering the national or regional, personal, discursive, and generic parameters that influenced the writing of history and the way rulers were depicted in humanist texts.

Das Geschichtswerk des Thukydides zeichnet sich durch einen Stil aus, der syntaktische Komplexitat, gesuchte Unregelmaigkeit und eine teils extreme Komprimierung der Sprache miteinander verbindet. Wie Thukydides selbst erklart, war sein Werk nicht fur Rezitationen bestimmt, sondern es sollte im einsamen Leseakt studiert und erarbeitet werden. Aufgrund dieser Anlage bietet der Text auch auergewohnliche ubersetzerische Schwierigkeiten. Die vorliegende Untersuchung der Geschichte deutschsprachiger Thukydidesubersetzungen geht der Frage nach, welche Strategien Ubersetzer eingesetzt haben, um diese Herausforderung zu bewaltigen. Ausgehend von den einzelnen Ubersetzungen, die jeweils in ihrem kulturellen Kontext situiert und anhand ausgewahlter Partien sprachlich analysiert werden, zeichnet der Verfasser den Wandel der Ubersetzungsverfahren vom 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert nach. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit erfahrt dabei das Verhaltnis zwischen Ubersetzungspraxis und Ubersetzungstheorie, die sich als eng miteinander verzahnt erweisen.

Transparency and Dissimulation analyses the configurations of ancient neoplatonism in early modern English texts. In looking closely at poems and prose writings by authors as diverse as Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Edward Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Traherne, Thomas Browne and, last not least, Aphra Behn, this study attempts to map the outlines of a neoplatonic aesthetics in literary practice as well as to chart its transformative potential in the shifting contexts of cultural turbulency and denominational conflict in 16th- and 17th-century England. As part of a "e;new"e;, contextually aware, aesthetics, it seeks to determine some of the functions neoplatonic structures - such as forms of recursivity or certain modes of apophatic speech - are capable of fulfilling in combination and interaction with other, heterogeneous or even ideologically incompatible elements. What emerges is a surprisingly versatile poetics of excess and enigma, with strong Plotinian and Erigenist accents. This appears to need the traditional ingredients of petrarchism or courtliness only as material for the formation of new and dynamic wholes, revealing its radical metaphysical potential above all in the way it helps to resist the easy answers - in religion, science, or the fashions of libertine love.

The perception of demons in late antiquity was determined by the cultural and religious contexts. Therefore the authors of this volume take into consideration a wide variety of texts stemming from different religious milieus ranging from spells, apocalypses, martyrdom literature to hagiography and focus specifically on the literary aspects of the transformation of the demonic in this period of transition.

This book considers the story of Nero and Octavia, as told in the pseudo-Senecan Octavia and the works of ancient historiographers, and its reception in (early) modern opera and some related examples of other performative genres. In total the study assembles more than 30 performative texts (including 22 librettos), ranging chronologically from L'incoronazione di Poppea in 1642/43 until the early 20th century, and provides detailed information on all of them. In a close examination of the libretto (and dramatic) texts, the study shows the impact and development of this fascinating story from the beginnings of historical opera onwards. The volume demonstrates the various transformations of the characters of Nero and his wives and of the depiction of their relationship over the centuries, and it looks at the tension between "e;historical"e; elements and genre conventions. The book is therefore of relevance to literary scholars as well as to readers interested in the evolution of Nero's image in present-day media.

Der Tagungsband behandelt visuelle und literarische Bilder, die sich Künstler und Wissenschaftler von der Spätantike bis in unsere Gegenwart vom antiken Rom gemacht haben. Anlass der Tagung war das kolossale Panorama Rom 312 von Yadegar Asisi, das 2005-2009 in Leipzig gezeigt wurde. Die Beiträge fragen nach der Art und Weise, wie die Rom-Idee jeweils verarbeitet und in den kulturellen Kontext einer Epoche wie auch der beteiligten Akteure übersetzt wurde.

Übersetzen stellt einen vielschichtigen Prozess dar, der sowohl Sprache und Kultur des Übersetzenden als auch die Wahrnehmung von Sprache und Kultur des Übersetzten transformiert. Die Diskussion, inwieweit literarische Texte im Hinblick auf ihre individuelle Form und ihren kulturell fremden Gehalt übersetzt werden können, erhielt in Deutschland um 1800 ¿ gerade auch im Zusammenhang mit antiker Literatur ¿ eine neue Qualität; viele der damals aufgeworfenen Fragen prägen bis heute den übersetzungstheoretischen Diskurs.Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die exemplarisch das Übersetzen als hermeneutisches Problem, als Vermittlung, als Suche nach der äquivalenten Form und als schöpferischen Prozess untersuchen. Gegenüber der vorherrschenden dualen Betrachtungsweise, die sich an polaren Schlagwörtern wie ¿frei / treü, ¿verfremdend / einbürgernd¿ u. ä. orientiert, hat dieser Zugriff den Vorteil, dass verschiedene Konzeptionen und Funktionen des Übersetzens sich nicht von vornherein gegenseitig ausschließen, sondern in unterschiedlichen Gewichtungen auch zusammen auftreten können und so eine differenziertere Bestimmung des komplexen Vorgangs des Übersetzens ermöglichen.
