"Death The Knight And The Lady" by H. The 15th century is the setting for the ghost story De Vere Stacpoole. The plot centers on the tragic saga of Sir James Douglas, a knight who, after killing his wife in a fit of rage, is cursed to live his entire life as a ghost. Until he locates a woman who will willingly become his wife and break the curse, the knight is doomed to wander the earth. The ghost of Sir James encounters a young lady who he thinks might be the one to break the curse centuries later. She is a kind and compassionate woman, but she is also engaged to be married to a man named John. Sir James decides to test her loyalty and devotion by appearing to her as a ghost and asking her to marry him. She is understandably terrified by the spectral presence, but she cares about the knight and decides to assist him. In the end, the ghost of Sir James finally finds peace and is able to rest in peace knowing that he has done the right thing. The story is a haunting tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption that explores the idea of what it means to be truly human.

Reprint of the original 1924 English translation edition! Buddenbrooks is a 1901 novel by Thomas Mann, chronicling the decline of a wealthy north German merchant family over the course of four generations, incidentally portraying the manner of life and mores of the bourgeoisie. Mann drew deeply from the history of his own family, the Mann family of Lübeck, and their milieu. It was Mann's first novel, published when he was twenty-six years old. Buddenbrooks became a major literary success. The work led to a Nobel Prize in Literature for Mann in 1929. Although the Nobel award generally recognizes an author's body of work, the Swedish Academy identified "his great novel Buddenbrooks" as the principal reason for his prize.

REVIEWS: "Powerful, evocative visit to ancient Rome. Martha Marks takes us there with this superb novel and leaves us eager for the next installment! -Grady Harp, Top 100 Reviewer, Amazon Vine Voice "If I were to select a book of the year to read, RUBIES OF THE VIPER would be in the running for top choice. Yes, it is that good." -Rhonda Esakov for Story Circle Book Reviews "I ordered this book after seeing all the five star reviews. Now I see they are well deserved. Impossible to put this book down. I HIGHLY recommend this book." -Patricia Goodspeed, Amazon Vine Voice "This was a great read with many enjoyable characters (or deplorable characters, as appropriate) and a good deal of vivid historical detail. I am eager to read the sequel, The Viper Amulet." -Kristen McQuinn for Discovery Diamonds Book Reviews "A gem, not in the rough as one might expect from a new author, but polished enough to reflect the seemingly effortless combination of scholarship and storytelling ability. Despite being set during the ubiquitous Julio-Claudian line of emperors, it is a very fresh, unique voice among the crowd... I am so glad I didn't miss this and urge you to give it a try. Oh- even if you aren't a fan of historical mysteries set in the ancient world, I would still bet you would enjoy it- all you need is an appreciation of good writing and an ability to handle plot." -Goodreads reviewer Sheri Humble "Martha Marks' writing is beautiful. Her lifelong love of ancient Rome shines through in this novel. She gives us details about life at all levels of Roman society, from patricians to slaves, and she takes us to a great variety of locations, from Theodosia's estate to an underground prison cell, to a musical competition at Nero's palace. The scenes set in Greece and Syria are beautifully written, as well. I highly recommend RUBIES OF THE VIPER, and I am looking forward to the other two volumes in the trilogy." --Vicki Kondelik, librarian, University of Michigan
