Marcus Furius Camillus is the dominant figure in our traditional history of the Roman Republic in the early fourth century. He has been featured in histories of Rome since the Renaissance, but currently is viewed with great scepticism, some even questioning his very existence. What is notably absent, however, is any reference to a system of historical method: how one distinguishes fact from fiction. This is the first modern monograph on Camillus, and it grapples head-on with this problem. The results are unexpected.

Dahinter steht die Überzeugung, dass die moderne Demokratieforschung vielfältige Analyseinstrumente für neue Einsichten in die antiken Phänomene zur Verfügung stellt und umgekehrt auch der virulente Populismus der Gegenwart durch die historische Perspektivierung besser verstanden werden kann.

50 Jahre österreichische Ausgrabungen in Velia - diesen Anlass hat das Österreichische Historische Institut sehr gerne wahrgenommen, um im Herbst 2021 in Rom als Gastgeber für die anläßlich dieses Jubiläums ausgerichtete Tagung zu fungieren, die eine umfassende Bestandsaufnahme der aktuellen Forschungslage zu Velia ermöglichte. Die Akten dieser Tagung skizzieren Geschichte und Entwicklung der archäologischen Forschungen, die ein halbes Jahrhundert lang in Velia von zwei österreichischen Instituten, dem Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Universität Innsbruck (1971-1988) und dem Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Universität Wien (1989-2021), durchgeführt wurden. Diese 50-jährige Forschungstätigkeit basierte auf einer engen und freundschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit mit den zuständigen italienischen Institutionen, in erster Linie der Soprintendenza Archeologica und in den letzten Jahren mit dem Parco Archeologico di Paestum e Velia, zu dem die Stätte seit Beginn des Jahres 2020 gehört.

Die lateinische Liebesdichtung begann nicht erst mit Catull. Nur ist ihr Umfang und ihre Verbreitung nicht mehr zu bemessen, zu viele Texte sind im Laufe der Zeit verlorengegangen. Laevius ist der einzige vorcatullsche Liebesdichter, dessen ursprünglich umfangreiches Werk heute noch mit knapp 50 Fragmenten unterschiedlicher Länge verhältnismäßig gut bezeugt ist. Es trug den Titel Erotopaegnia und bestand aus narrativen Gedichten zu erotischen Themen aus dem Mythos. Diese Arbeit legt neben einer Edition und einem Interpretationskommentar auch übergreifende Untersuchungen zu den Erotopaegnia vor. Sie thematisiert in einem weiteren Rahmen ebenso die frühe lateinische Literaturgeschichte sowie allgemeine Fragen zu Literatur und Gesellschaft der späteren Römischen Republik. Als Ergebnis kann ein neues und vertieftes Verständnis des rätselhaften Dichters Laevius gezeichnet und die Forschung zur Geschichte der lateinischen Liebesdichtung auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt werden: Laevius war kein zeitnaher und unmittelbarer Vorgänger der ,Neoteriker', sondern Vertreter einer altlateinischen Liebesdichtung, die sich stilistisch und inhaltlich stark von Catull und den Liebeselegikern unterscheidet.

The House of the Two Skeletons is located in a quarter at the western border of the Hellenistic city of Morgantina in Sicily. It was partially investigated in 1971 and 2004/05, and fully excavated from 2014 to 2016. Built around 250 BC as a simple and modestly decorated courtyard house, it occupied a squarish lot with a surface area of 389 m2 and included 20 rooms. During its use for some 50-60 years, the house was remodeled four times. The building was split into two separate courtyard houses in Phase 3 before 211 BC, when the Romans conquered Morgantina. At the end of this phase, two adult women were buried in two separate corner rooms of the house, and their skeletons gave this house its modern name. The women were most likely buried in haste during the tumultuous years that preceded the final conquest of the city, sometime between 214 and 211 BC. After 211 BC, the house was briefly and partially used for modest residential purposes and industrial activities that can no longer be specified.This book presents the archaeological evidence of the House of the Two Skeletons in a contextualized and comprehensive manner. All rooms are described and assessed one after another, including the architecture, the stratigraphy, and the finds, followed by an interpretation that outlines the phasing scheme and possible function of a room. Thematic discussions are dedicated to significant features, such as the construction materials and techniques, the water management, kitchens, platforms, evidence of domestic cult, metal finds and coins, and the skeletons. Finally, a concluding narrative outlines the development and function of the House of the Two Skeletons and assesses it in the local urban and regional Sicilian context.

Mlambo employs a transcultural comparative approach based on a persistent factor found in both societies: land expropriation. Often articulated in a framework of patriarchy, land appropriation takes place in the context of war-shaped masculinities.This book fosters a deeper understanding of social processes, adding an important new perspective to the study of military violence, and paying attention to veterans' claims for rewards and compensation. These claims are developed in the context of war and its direct consequences, namely expropriation, confiscation and violence. Plato's moral realism rests on the Idea of the Good, the unhypothetical first principle of all. It is this, as Plato says, that makes just things useful and beneficial. That Plato makes the first principle of all the Idea of the Good sets his approach apart from that of virtually every other philosopher. This fact has been occluded by later Christian Platonists who tried to identify the Good with the God of scripture. But for Plato, theology, though important, is subordinate to metaphysics. For this reason, ethics is independent of theology and attached to metaphysics. This book challenges many contemporary accounts of Plato's ethics that start with the so-called Socratic paradoxes and attempt to construct a psychology of action or moral psychology that makes these paradoxes defensible. Rather, Lloyd Gerson argues that Plato at least never thought that moral realism was defensible outside of a metaphysical framework.
