Frohlockender Götterstreit nannte Johann Sebastian Bachs Textdichter Salomon Franck die Gratulationsmusik für den Hof von Sachsen-Weißenfels, die heute als Jagdkantate BWV 208 allgemein bekannt ist. Das Werk wurde in Anwesenheit des Komponisten vermutlich am 23. Februar 1713, dem 31. Geburtstag des Herzogs Christian, uraufgeführt. Damals bestand der Chor wohl nur aus den vier Solisten, doch selbstverständlich kann er auch größer besetzt werden. Auch später noch führte Bach das farbenprächtige und abwechslungsreiche Werk, das aus 15 kurzen Sätzen besteht, mehrfach auf. Da die Kantate mit einem Rezitativ beginnt, bietet es sich an, einen Instrumentalsatz voranzustellen. Hierfür eignet sich der Eingangssatz des 1. Brandenburgischen Konzerts BWV 1046 mit seinen Jagdhornklängen, den Bach später auch in anderen Werken wie der Kirchenkantate BWV 52 verwendet hat. Dieser Satz aus BWV 1046a (älteste Fassung) ist in der Edition als Aufführungsvorschlag enthalten.

Zur Erinnerung an den Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg sind in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten zahlreiche Sammelbände und Monographien erschienen. Man könnte annehmen, dass dieses Thema schon ausreichend erforscht worden ist, was natürlich nicht der Fall sein kann. Denn in diesem "ersten Weltkrieg" haben so viele Akteure interveniert, dass noch lange nicht alle Dokumente, Briefe, Akten, Pläne, Memoranden, Augenzeugenberichte, Tagebücher etc. ausgewertet sind. Insofern ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Teodora Toleva (1968-2011), eine junge, ambitionierte und viel zu früh an den Folgen einer schweren Krankheit verstorbene Historikerin aus Bulgarien, der dieser Gedenkband gewidmet ist, in den letzten Jahren ihres Lebens ebenfalls zum Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg Forschungen betrieben hat. Leider hat ihr früher und tragischer Tod die Vollendung ihres ehrgeizigen Forschungsprojekts verhindert. Dank der Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger aus mehreren Ländern, die alle an dieser Gedenkschrift mitgearbeitet haben, sollen ihre unvollendeten Forschungen durch neue Aspekte zu dem Thema ergänzt werden.

'Bach Counterpoint - Two-part invention' is a textbook in two volumes. The aim of this book is to explain Bach's compositional methods in an accessible manner, using methods and tools specially developed for this purpose. The two-part Bach inventions are a natural starting point, and have certain clear advantages when used to illustrate Baroque contrapuntal composition; it is in two parts, its form is clear, and it contains the same compositional techniques as the fugue, such as countermelody/counterpoint, sequences and motivic development. The book develops a method of understanding and composing inventions, based on a throrough analysis and exploration of Bach's inventions. To illustrate the progression and stringency of this method, this book has been structured as an insight into the 'compositional workshop'. Through analyses and music examples, the process of creation is illustrated, and throughout the book, how and why musical decisions are made are explained. Volume I will mainly focus on the first section of the form, up to the entry of the theme in the dominant or tonic parallel tonality. While relatively short, this willprove sufficient in introducing Bach's music. The exercises in this volume include writing counterpoint to a given melody, composing a longer sequence that concludes in a cadence in the new tonality, and will also cover topics such as melodic development, rhythm, and the treatment of dissonance in the style of Bach. In Volume II, instruction in compositional development continues with the analysis and composition of complete inventions, including the first section of the form, which is covered in this volume.
