In 1861, Harriet Jacobs became the first formerly enslaved African American woman to publish a book-length account of her life. In crafting her coming-of-age story, she insisted upon biographical accuracy and bold creativity--telling the truth while giving herself and others fictionalized names. She also adapted conventions from two other popular genres: the sentimental novel and the slave narrative. Then, despite facing obstacles not encountered by white women and Black men, she orchestrated the book's publication and became a traveling bookseller in an effort to inspire passive Americans to support the abolition of slavery. Engaging with the latest research on Jacobs's life and work, this edition helps readers to understand the magnitude of her achievement in writing, publishing, and distributing her life story. However, it also shows how this monumental accomplishment was only the beginning of her contributions, given her advocacy work over the nearly forty years that she lived after its publication. As a survivor of sexual abuse who became an advocate, Jacobs laid a foundation for activist movements such as #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo. This edition also features six appendices, placing at readers' fingertips resources that further illuminate the issues raised by Jacobs's remarkable life and legacy.

The Union Generals Speak is the first annotated edition of the 1864 congressional investigation into Major General George Gordon Meade's conduct during the Gettysburg campaign. The transcripts alone, which present eyewitness accounts from sixteen participant officers at Gettysburg, offer a wealth of information about the what and the why of one of the most pivotal battles in American history; but it is the addition of contextual comments and background material by Bill Hyde that unleashes this virtually untapped resource for readers. Laden with ulterior motives, prejudices, faulty recollection, and outright lies, the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War's report is a minefield of inaccuracies. Hyde's comprehensive analysis, informed by recent scholarship, transforms it into an accessible, rewarding aid for students of the Gettysburg chapter in the Civil War. In the course of the volume, Hyde gives thorough examination to the origins and purpose of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, the political climate and military thinking in Washington at the time of the Meade hearings, and the hidden agendas of the witnesses and seven committee members. He maintains that the JCCW's dissatisfaction with Meade went much deeper than disapproval of the general's hesitancy to pursue and cripple Lee's Army of Northern Virginia on July 4, 1863--a failure that disappointed every northern citizen from Lincoln to the ordinary soldier. The bipartisan body of mostly radical Republicans who favored a ruthless defeat of the South aimed, Hyde shows, to restore power to the committee's favorite, Major General Joseph Hooker, whom Meade had succeeded as commander of the Army of the Potomac only three days before Gettysburg. The unfolding of the Gettysburg campaign, the career of General Meade, and the North's highly politicized method of warmaking all receive new illumination in The Union General's Speak. Hyde's balanced critique of this important primary source reminds us that though Meade is remembered now mainly for his role in defeating the Confederates at Gettysburg, the JCCW hearings confirmed that he was not the leader to win the war.

Most of the great powers contested the lands around the Adriatic Sea during the Napoleonic Wars. While never a major theatre of operations, the Adriatic was part of the overall strategy of most of the combatants. It played an essential role by influencing alliances and diverting troops and ships, which all contributed to the defeat of Napoleon. The Napoleonic Wars was also a period of significant change, with the French and British intervening in a region that had long been a battleground reserved for the Austrian, Russian andOttoman empires. This book examines the Adriatic campaigns, including those rarely mentioned in the history of the period, and the armies, navies and personalities that fought in the region between 1797 and 1815. Austrian, French, Russian, British, and their foreign regiments fought up and down the coast, sometimes with or against local leaders like Peter I of Montenegro and Ali Pasha of Ioannina. Many commanders were far from home, with orders taking weeks to reach them. This meant even junior officers could take military and diplomatic decisions usually reserved for more senior officers. This is a story of strategy and small wars with many colourful personalities playing their part in a fascinating, if violent, tale against the backdrop of the frontier sea.

"The Battles of Forts Henry and Donelson took place in February of 1862 and were early indicators of the success the US would have in the Civil War's Western Theater. Due to Kentucky's neutrality at the time, Brig. Gen. Daniel S. Donelson was instructed to find suitable sites for fortification along the Tennessee River but just inside the state boundaries of Tennessee. Forts Henry and Donelson were constructed in the summer of 1861 and were quickly identified by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant as strategic fortifications that, if conquered, would open the Federal Army's path to Alabama and Mississippi. Fort Henry fell to Federal control on February 6, 1862, and Fort Donelson fell six days later. With the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers now open to Federal gunboats, Grant and his army would head southwest to Memphis and on to Vicksburg"--

With a closeness perhaps unique to siblings orphaned young, Orlando and Artimisia "Missie" Palmer exchanged intimate letters throughout their lives. These letters (interspersed with additional letters from Oliver Kennedy, the Palmers' first cousin) offer a clear and entertaining window into the life and times of a junior Confederate officer serving in the Western Theater of the Civil War. Though he initially felt Americans would see "the folly and the madness" of going to war, Orlando enlisted as a private in what would become Company H of the First (later Fifteenth) Arkansas Infantry, informing his sister that he had volunteered "not for position, not for a name, but from patriotic motivation." However, he was ambitious enough to secure an appointment as Maj. Gen. William Joseph Hardee's personal secretary; he then rose to become his regiment's sergeant major, his company's first lieutenant, and later captain and brigade adjutant. Soldier letters typically report only what can be observed at the company level, but Palmer's high-ranking position offers a unique view of strategic rather than tactical operations. Palmer's letters are not all related to his military experience, though, and the narrative is enhanced by his nuanced reflections on courtship customs and personal relationships. For instance, Palmer frequently attempts to entertain Missie with witticisms and tales of his active romantic life: "We have so much to do," he quips, "that we have no time to do anything save to visit the women. I am in love with several dozen of them and am having >The Folly and the Madness adds depth to the genre of Civil War correspondence and provides a window into the lives of ordinary southerners at an extraordinary time.

"This books collects amendments to the Constitution of the United States that Virginians proposed during the secession crisis alongside select speeches of the state's political leaders. Editor Dwight T. Pitcaithley's selection and introduction emphasize that advocates and opponents of secession alike wanted to protect slavery and the interests of enslavers in Virginia. Among the documents are Governor Letcher's January 7, 1861, address to the General Assembly; speeches given at the Washington Peace Conference, US Senate, and House of Representatives; and the state's secession convention. Chapter 6 contains the sixteen constitutional amendments proposed by Virginians. The volume also includes a timeline for Secession Winter and questions for discussion"--

"While one of the most persistent underlying themes in the historiography of the Civil War is the "brother against brother" one, particularly in states that were deeply divided, Pittsburgh and its citizenry provide an instance of almost universal pro-Union ideological solidarity as the war approached and overtook the country. The city achieved this unity despite forces that might ordinarily tear it apart: an ethnically diverse population, including many new immigrants, a complex industrial-economic situation, and an enormous contribution of soldiers who died in combat. A study of local history during a tumultuous time and of pro-Unionism in which different groups tried to outdo one another in patriotic fervor, this book provides a wide-ranging look at Pittsburgh during the war years"--

"Most of the letters in this collection are to Cox's wife, Helen. This volume's editor, Gene Schmiel, wrote a well-regarded biography of Cox in 2014. In 2012, Schmiel was made aware that Oberlin College had a cache of letters that had been transcribed by Cox's great granddaughter, and the cache turned out to contain 213 letters written to his wife during the Civil War. Well-known for his incredibly detailed postwar writing about campaigns, Cox reveals himself in these letters as an ambitious, warmhearted, and concerned observer of the progress of the war. The letters reflect his service in the Maryland Campaign, Atlanta Campaign, and Franklin-Nashville Campaign"--

"The siege at Port Hudson, largely overshadowed by the longer, large-scale siege of Vicksburg, nevertheless had many parallels to it. Like Vicksburg, Port Hudson involved logistical challenges, an overmatched Confederate defense, and a rough slog in usually adverse conditions. Among many interesting features, the Port Hudson campaign featured widespread participation of African American Federal troops. Drawing on a large body of primary sources and secondary scholarship, Thrasher presents a 'bottom-up' portrayal of the campaign"--

A study of the ocean operations of the Confederate Navy will introduce you to issues and context not considered in land operations. The global reach of the Confederate Navy, and its success in completely reducing the maritime merchant shipping of the United States of America is a story not often told. The daring of Confederate naval commanders easily match the audacity of Generals Stuart, Forrest, and Morgan. But there are other stories; the exploitation of new technologies, the success of the South's blockade runners, and the complexities of international relations are all interesting aspects of the story. And there is the successful combined arms offensive operations to re-take the South's largest port west of the Mississippi, Galveston, which demonstrates Southern ingenuity. Lastly there are the stories of the ironclads, some operating as squadrons at Charleston, Mobile and Richmond. The story of the men who developed naval strategy, and built and served in the Confederate States Navy, (C.S.N.) is as inspirational as that of their brothers who brought glory to the Confederacy on thousands of battlefields. Like the land campaigns, there are endless stories of heroism, ingenuity, imagination, leadership and sacrifice connected with the Confederate Navy. In addition, the South made every effort to use technologies in an attempt to even the odds on the world's oceans and America's rivers. The story demonstrates a southern will to meet the challenges of fighting an enemy superior in material resources, with innovation, guile, courage and determination.

From Western Virginia with Jackson to Spotsylvania with Lee presents the diaries and letters of St. Joseph Tucker Randolph, a young Confederate soldier from Richmond, Virginia. As might be expected of the son of a bookseller, Tucker's writings offer lucid and candid descriptions of the Civil War. Unlike most who served, Randolph fought in both the eastern and western theaters of the war. He began the war in the 21st Virginia Infantry, a part of the famed Stonewall Brigade, before moving on to staff roles with Henry M. Ashby in Tennessee and John Pegram in Virginia. Throughout it all, he kept diaries and wrote letters home, correspondence his family preserved after Tucker's death in action at Bethesda Church in 1864. Tucker's lengthy accounts of campaigning in western Virginia in 1861 and early 1862 give many rich characterizations of the area and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. His writings from Kentucky and Tennessee in 1862 offers trenchant commentary on the failures of the western armies. Tucker's return to Virginia in late 1863 as a staff officer gave him the perfect vantage point to write about Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, including a particularly vivid account of the Battle of Spotsylvania in 1864. Ample illustrations and maps help bring Tucker's writings to life, making this book an excellent account of a young Confederate soldier's Civil War.Peter C. Luebke, editor of other Civil War narratives such as Albion Tourgée's The Story of a Thousand and The Autobiography of John A. Dahlgren, contextualizes the writings and provides thorough annotation on the people, places, and events mentioned. Noted scholar Gary W. Gallagher, the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War (emeritus) at the University of Virginia, contributes a foreword that amplifies the importance of Tucker's writings.
