Heaven High, Hell Deep, 1917-1918, first published in 1935, is author Norman Archibald's account of his experiences as an aviator in World War One. Archibald (1894-1975) joined the fledgling U.S. Army Air Service in the spring of 1917, underwent flight training in the U.S. and France, and began his hazardous patrol and combat duty in the skies against the Germans. Unfortunately, after several months at the front, Archibald's plane was hit by shrapnel and he was forced to crash-land behind enemy lines. His story continues with his imprisonment and deprivations as a prisoner-of-war until the war's end and his journey to freedom in Switzerland and France.

This text consists of identifying literary elements with historical guidelines in eleven stories selected from three texts entitled Historia Secreta de Chile (Secret History of Chile) written by the Chilean Jorge Baradit. These narratives are framed in historical events that occurred in Chile between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. Such stories, with historical glimpses, make up the analysis, the purpose of which is to elucidate the author's narrative style and identify elements typical of literature. Consequently, the study is preceded by a review of the cultural-literary framework in which literary and artistic terms such as postmodernism, contemporary literature and historical fiction are examined in depth, considering theorists from the 20th century onwards. In addition, an approach has been made to the artistic and literary movement known as Freak Power, to which the author Jorge Baradit belongs. Finally, four axes of analysis have been determined: discursive reconstruction between person-fact-character, symbolism of fire, dehumanisation of the self and recusation of the dictator. These themes are transversal in the stories chosen for this analysis.

Inspired by true events, "Don't Push Me" is an intergenerational saga of gay romance and the shame that cripples it. On a ski vacation in the Alps, Elliott discovers that the owners of the inn where he is staying are the descendants of a physician who took care of his grandfather, a prisoner during World War One. Elliott falls under the spell of Max, who, like his great grandfather, is haunted by an intractable sense of sexual shame. Characters grapple with an existential question - whether their sexual desires are a madness corrupting the soul or a gift of the gods, nudging them toward authenticity. The narrative goes back and forth between World War One, the 1960s, and 2007, underscoring the historical context of sexual identity and expression. The story explores the parallel worlds we inhabit and the people that invite us to cross borders. Echoing ancient poets and philosophers, the book celebrates the enchantment of the Jungfrau region of Switzerland, a place where spirits hide in the upper reaches of glacier-studded peaks and inspire mortals to grow wings and soar.

From a remote village between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire unrolls the intimate story of Teresa and Carlo, two young people whose paths cross and recross as they are first impelled by parents, then forced by sweeping world events to leave their childhood homes for lives they never imagined.Having left her mother and cherished dog Allucio, in Ulfano, Teresa works as a domestic servant in a large villa in Trento. She survives the Great War in the occupied city by banding together in a makeshift family with the other servants of the owners who have fled to escape the occupation. Carlo, an American still new to Italy and who speaks barely passable Italian, is just finding his footing in Trento when he’s dragged from bed at his boarding school, along with his classmates, and conscripted by the invading Austrian army. In a comical twist of fate, Carlo’s childhood near the Colorado gold mines motivates his captors to place him with a company of miners tasked with digging entrenchments and bunkers and building a massive fortress out of stone and ice, even as blizzards rage and artillery shells fall from the sky. Out of sheer loneliness, Carlo writes letters to Teresa, the girl he met only once in Trento. After the war, Carlo returns to Trento and reconnects with Teresa. Times are unsettled, as soldiers and those who fled the war flood back to the city and signs of the impending Influenza epidemic appear. With so much chaos, tradition gives way to new ideas, so neither worries about the consequences of their growing attachment. However, the same independence that has them dreaming of a future that didn’t exist when they were children, may pull them apart forever.

This is the story of my grandfather's life in the Merchant Navy, originally written by him during his retirement. He was a Marine Engineer from 1908 to 1945. This book describes a lifetime of adventure, hardship, and joy on all the different ships that he sailed, from grand liners to rusty hulks. He survived the two world wars, the depression of the 1930s, and at one time he even took his family to sea with him. He sailed on the Oceanic, the Olympic, the Britannic, and almost sailed on the Titanic. During the First World War he spent some time as a volunteer tugboat engineer at the Gallipoli Landings and later saved a ship from sinking from a torpedo strike. During the Second World War he survived two shipwrecks from torpedo strikes and avoided another sinking, thanks to the Enigma code breakers. He met a whole variety of people throughout the world during his career and often gave humorous talks in many ports that he visited around the world. This book also gives some details on the ships he sailed and a small window into the events, and the world at those times.
