Reluctant to place his family in danger, he has to solve his problems alone, something he's never had to do before. This volume is a collection of stories (some of them true!) from the writings of Robert Huddleston. Themes, both fiction and nonfiction, revolve around Bob's life experiences coming of age during World War II and his subsequent time in various US military and federal government positions. His tales capture the spirit and the chicanery of twentieth-century American boom times.ROBERT HUDDLESTON was awarded the coveted silver wings of an Army Air Corps pilot while still a teenager. This was followed by extensive training in the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter, the aircraft he would pilot in combat against German military forces in the air and on the ground. After the war, a university education under the GI Bill was followed by employment at New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range, where German rocket experts were employed. He then moved onto Washington, DC, to work at the Pentagon before joining the newly established space agency NASA, first at the Goddard Space Flight Center in nearby Maryland, later at NASA headquarters. Huddleston has degrees from the University of Missouri and George Washington University, and he graduated from the National Defense University in Washington, DC, as a representative of NASA.He married Pepita Lasalle on September 18, 1974. Departing federal service, he became a freelance writer publishing articles, essays, book reviews, and short stories. For ten years, he was a columnist for the Federal Times. An overview of Swansea's experience during World War II, set out in a single volume for the first time. The port and industries of Swansea were key targets for the Nazis. From the start, the town prepared for the worst with air-raid shelters, anti-aircraft guns, barrage balloons and efforts to fortify against attack by sea or air. With Britain heading into total war, this book looks at the impact of conscription on both men and women, food rationing, how Jewish refugees to Swansea and Swansea children evacuated to safer areas fared, and the war's effects on schooling, crime and healthcare in the town. The consequences of the numerous air raids and especially the searing attacks of February 1941 are investigated, as is the response to the ensuing emergencies, including sometimes deadly bomb-disposal work. Researched in both local and national archives, this book is a comprehensive testament to the lives of the people of Swansea, at home and overseas, over the course of the conflict, including many personal experiences.

In A Time to Love, we delve deeper into the tumultuous world of Klaus von Hartmann, a German economist ensnared by the Nazi regime during World War Two. When he courageously rescues a young Jewish girl from the clutches of SS officers in Munich, 1943, their lives become irrevocably intertwined. As Klaus hides and protects her during the war's darkest days, the emotional walls he builds threaten his ability to ever truly connect with another. His internal battle with sexual repression, a trait deeply ingrained in his character, jeopardizes his prospects of a genuine romantic relationship. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, we witness Klaus's poignant journey to recognize and embrace the profound love he feels for the woman who has become his life's anchor. Parallel to Klaus's story in Germany, we continue to follow the lives of the family and friends of his late younger brother, Karl (Charles), in England. As the tale progresses, the destinies of the two brothers' families converge, setting the stage for a heartwarming reunion and hinting at the captivating conclusion awaiting readers in the final instalment of this trilogy. Note: While A Time to Love follows the events of The Measure, focusing on the elder brother of the hero from the first book, it stands alone, offering a complete and enriching experience even for those unfamiliar with its predecessor.

**A TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR**Quite simply, this book is a work of genius - Matthew Parris, The SpectatorAn essential study of post-war gay London life... one of the best anthologies I have ever read - John Self, The ObserverWith it's wide-ranging selection, generous biographical notes and provocative bibliography, Some Men in London is a serious and important contribution to our understanding of Britain up to today - Fiona Sampson, The TabletAn absolutely extraordinary book ... about actually what life was like for homosexual men in London in the 1940s and the 1950s... It's amazing - Dominic Sandbrook The first part of a major new anthology which uncovers the rich reality of life for queer men in LondonIn the 1940s, it was believed that homosexuality had been becoming more widespread in the aftermath of war. A moral panic ensued, centred around London as the place to which gay men gravitated. In a major new anthology, Peter Parker explores what it was actually like for queer men in London in this period, whether they were well-known figures such as John Gielgud, 'Chips' Channon and E.M. Forster, or living lives of quiet - or occasionally rowdy - anonymity in pubs, clubs, more public places of assignation, or at home. It is rich with letters, diaries, psychological textbooks, novels, films, plays and police records, covering a wide range of viewpoints, from those who deplored homosexuality to those who campaigned for its decriminalisation. This first volume, from 1945 to 1959, details a community forced to live at constant risk of blackmail or prison. Yet it also shows a thriving and joyous subculture, one that enriched a mainstream culture often ignorant of its debt to gay creators. Some Men In London is a testament to queer life, which was always much more complex than newspapers, governments and the Metropolitan Police Force imagined.
