Die vor 120 Jahren erschienene, längst vergriffene deutsche Ausgabe von Tolstois Kalenderbuch "Gedanken weiser Männer" wird hier von Ingrid von Heiseler als ungekürzte Neuedition vorgelegt. Der Übersetzer Adolf Heß erläutert zur Entstehung dieser Sammlung: "Während der schweren Krankheit Leo N. Tolstois im Januar 1903, als sein Leben an einem seidenen Faden hing und er der gewohnten Arbeit nicht nachgehen konnte, fand er doch die Kraft, täglich im Neuen Testament und auf einem Kalender im Schlafzimmer die Aussprüche verschiedener großer Männer zu lesen. Aber das Jahr und mit ihm der Kalender ging zu Ende und nun entstand in Tolstoi der Wunsch, sich selbst Auszüge aus verschiedenen Denkern für jeden Tag zusammenzustellen. Täglich vom Bette aus, soweit es seine Kräfte erlaubten, machte er diese Auszüge - fügte auch eigenes hinzu ..."Das so entstandene Buch war Auftakt zu insgesamt drei weisheitlichen Lesewerken Tolstois (es folgten der Lektürezyklus "Für alle Tage", 1904-1908, und die Anthologie "Der Weg des Lebens", 1910). Dokumentiert wird in der vorliegenden Ausgabe eine Rezension der "Illustrierten Zeitung für das gesamte Judentum" von 1905: "Es ist sehr bemerkenswert, dass unter den sechsundfünfzig Autoren, die Tolstoi exzerpiert hat, der Talmud am stärksten vertreten ist. Von den Sprüchen für die 365 Tage des Jahres sind nämlich nicht weniger als hundert und sieben dem Talmud entnommen. Diese enorme Ziffer wird noch dadurch erhöht, dass die Zitate aus dem Talmud meist von größerem Umfang sind und jedes von ihnen füglich in mehrere Sprüche zerlegt werden kann.
