A comparison of tribal politics and the impact on governance in Kuwait, Oman and Qatar Tribe-state relations are a foundational element of authoritarian bargains in the Middle East - particularly in the Gulf States. However, the structures of governance built upon that foundation exhibit wide differences. What explains this variation in the salience of kinship authority? Through a case comparison of Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, Scott Weiner shows that variation in tribal access to limited resources before state building can account for these differences. Based on empirical data and over 50 interviews with former government officials, tribal leaders, civil society activists and students, the book reveals important new details about state formation on the Arabian Peninsula. Key features Systematically connects the construction of kinship identity to state-level political outcomes Emphasises the importance of pre-state conditions to post-state building politics Assesses kinship politics in the ruling family, state ministries, parliaments, local governing institutions and interpersonal interactions Scott Weiner is a professorial lecturer in political science at George Washington University.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom is T. E. Lawrence's memoir of his involvement in leading a portion of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman empire during World War I. The empire had joined the side of Germany and the Central Powers in the war, and Britain hoped that a successful revolt would take the empire out of the war effort. Britain had also promised the Arabs that, if they were successful, England would recognize a single Arab state.Lawrence convinced the Arab leaders, who had historically not shown a willingness to work together, to join forces in supporting Britain's strategy in the area. His memoir is part travelogue, part philosophy treatise, and part action novel. It details his movements and actions during his two-year involvement, his relationships with the various Arab leaders and those who fought with him, and his thoughts-and doubts-during that time. It's a gripping, highly readable tale made famous by the movie Lawrence of Arabia, and one that Winston Churchill called "unsurpassable" as a "narrative of war and adventure."
Utilizing the ten planks of communism, Democratic Party Elitists: Totalitarian Wolves in Sheep's Clothing draws parallels with much of what has occurred in the United States since the Progressive Era, most of it implemented by the Democratic Party presidents, but some of it from the Republican side of the aisle. It is an analysis of the implementation of communist, or statist, rule in America and it clearly describes the strategies employed by the Democratic Party to achieve its goal of totalitarian rule.

"As a young British intelligence officer in Cairo, archaeologist and adventurer Thomas Edward Lawrence became involved in the 1916 Arab Revolt, fighting alongside rebel forces against the Ottomans. He made a legendary 300-mile journey through blistering heat; he wore Arab dress; and he strongly identified with the people in his adopted lands. By 1918, he had a ¹20,000 price on his head. Despite readers' long fascination in his story, Lawrence--one of history's most enigmatic adventurers--has long remained unknowable, But with in-depth knowledge of what it takes to venture into the unknown, this authoritative biography from famed explorer Ranulph Fiennes at last brings enthralling insight and clarity to this remarkable life"--

"The new book censor hasn't slept soundly in weeks. By day he combs through manuscripts at a government office, looking for anything that would make a book unfit to publish--allusions to queerness, unapproved religions, any mention of life before the Revolution. By night the characters of literary classics crowd his dreams, and pilfered novels pile up in the house he shares with his wife and daughter. As the siren song of forbidden reading continues to beckon, he descends into a netherworld of resistance fighters, undercover booksellers, and outlaw librarians trying to save their history and culture."--Provided by publisher.
This book casts light on a much neglected phase of the UNESCO world heritage site of Palmyra, namely the period between the fall of the Palmyrene 'Empire' (AD 272) and the end of the Umayyad dominion (AD 750).
In architectural discourse surrounding the Arabian Gulf, the desert is often overlooked as a contrasting backdrop to the region's oil-fueled cities. Space Wars challenges the view of the desert as a wasteland by bringing together the perspectives of architects, artists, ecologists, cartographers, and more to shed light on a complex landscape that is host to critical operations for the development of sovereign states. Moving across scales and time, Kuwait's hinterland serves as the critical lens to look at the region's past traumas, current struggles, and possible futures.
Until recently, Arab-Brazilian relations have been largely invisible to area studies and Comparative Literature scholarship. Yet Arabs have left a permanent imprint on Brazil: from the legacy of Muslim Iberia, transmitted by Portuguese settlers; to waves of Arab immigrants since the late nineteenth century; to the prominence today of Brazilians of Arab descent in politics, the economy, literature, and culture. The first book of its kind, Arab Brazil argues that representations of Arab and Muslim immigrants in Brazilian literature and popular culture reveal anxieties and contradictions in the country's ideologies of national identity.
Many countries in Asia are inhabited by multi-segment societies diversified in terms of race, religion, language and economic status. They have repeatedly provided the basis for analysis of the search for consensus in the construction of a political scene that would ensure the participation in power of each group. Regardless of the chosen model, the distribution of power in multi-segment societies has always been characterized by a state of "unstable equilibrium". Practical solutions constantly evolved between consociationalism, centripetalism, federalism. In extreme cases they led to political disintegration of states or to permanent domination of one of the segments, most often based on authoritarian solutions. In this volume, a group of scholars specializing in countries of the region try to point out the dynamics of the "unstable equilibrium" of power sharing in particular Asian countries and analyze the trends occurring in them in the 21st century.

This book explores the application of the work of the philosopher Giorgio Agamben to the post-Arab Uprisings in the Middle East, considering the evolution of regime-society relations that ultimately erupted in violence in the early months of 2011. Agamben's ideas of the state of exception and bare life provide important intellectual tools to understand the nature of sovereignty and the regulation of life, which has largely been missing in the study of the region. Filling a theoretical and empirical gap by exploring the concept of the 'state of exception' via a multidisciplinary approach, Simon Mabon, Sanaa Alsarghali and contributors in the fields of political science, law and philosophy offer a unique set of perspectives analysing how politics and law combine to facilitate the misuse of executive powers.
In recent years, the Arab world and Iran have been afflicted by cataclysmic events, among them brutal state crackdowns of revolutions. Yet, filmmakers have persisted in their desire to tell their stories, against the odds, in creative acts that attest to their imagination, courage and resilience. In this book, Shohini Chaudhuri examines a broad range of films made during the tumultuous period since 2009, ranging from internationally award-winning festival favourites, such as For Sama (2019), Capernaum (2018) and Taxi Tehran (2015), to lesser-known films from the region. While freedom of expression is often understood through the lens of state censorship, she reveals the different types of obstacles that filmmakers face and their strategies for overcoming them so that those constraints are transformed into creative opportunities. Using her original interviews with filmmakers such as Waad al-Kateab, Yasmin Fedda, Larissa Sansour, Mani Haghighi and Ossama Mohammed, she identifies nine creative strategies for producing work under conditions of crisis.Chaudhuri argues that creativity is indelibly shaped by constraints, whether these are externally imposed by existing materials, funding and socio-political conditions, or self-imposed constraints, through choices of genre or acceptance of rules and responsibilities. She shows that the range of creative strategies emanating from the region is much wider than allegory and becoming ever more direct. She thus opens up new lines of inquiry into cinematic creativity in sites of conflict and crisis in the Middle East and beyond.
