First published in 1933, Brazilian Adventure is Peter Fleming's account of his expeditionary search for the lost Colonel. Peter Fleming was the brother of Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond series and was literary editor of The Times.
Daniel Cunha has a lot on his mind. He got dumped by his pregnant girlfriend, his grandfather just dropped dead and on the anniversary of the raid that doomed his drug-dealing aunt and uncle, his vicious mother is coming home . . . Misfortune, however, is a Cunha family affair, and no generation is spared. Not Daniel's grandfather Joao, forced to raise his siblings while still a child himself. Not Joao's wife, Marta, branded as a bruxa and dragged from her home. And certainly not Maria, so envious of her younger sister's beauty that she took revenge and fled to the States, abandoning her children. But now Maria has returned to finally make peace, or so she says. As New Year's Eve nears, the Cunha family hurtles toward an irrevocable breaking point: a fire, a knife, and a death on the sands of Copacabana Beach.

This thorough and timely book collects essays on the political economy of Brazil, focusing on the federal administrations led by the Workers' Party (PT), under Presidents Lula and Dilma Rousseff. The essays examine the economic, political, and social aspects of these governments, and a whole spectrum of policies implemented - or not - between 2003 and 2016, with implications for the subsequent period up to, and including, the administration led by Jair Bolsonaro. What emerges from this examination is the inescapable recognition that those left leaning governments were neoliberal, but in different ways when compared with other administrations in Brazil's history. Their similarities and differences are examined in detail. Contributors are: Adalmir Antonio Marquetti, Alessandro Miebach, Alfredo Saad-Filho, Ana Paula Colombi, Andre Singer, Andreia Galvao, Armando Boito Jr, Barbara Fritz, Cecilia Hoff, Celio Hiratuka, Claudio Castelo Branco Puty, Cristhiane Falchetti, Daniela Magalhaes Prates, Denise Gentil, Eduardo Fagnani, Fabiano Santos, Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos, Glaison Augusto Guerrero, Guilherme Mello, Gustavo Codas Friedmann, Humberto Martins, Jose Dari Krein, Lena Lavinas, Lucas Salvador, Andrietta, Luiz Fernando de Paula, Luiz Filgueiras, Marcelo Arend, Patricia Rocha Lemos, Paula Marcelino, Pedro Cezar Dutra Fonseca, Pedro Mendes Loureiro, Pedro Paulo Zuluth Bastos, Pedro Rossi, Rafael Moura, Ruy Braga, and Soraia Aparecida Cardozo.
This book examines the Brazilian political process in the period of 2003-2020: the governments led by the Workers' Party and their reformist policies, the deep political crisis that led to the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and the rise of Bolsonaro neofascism. The author maintains that the Party and ideological conflicts present in the Brazilian politics are linked to the class distributive conflicts present in the Brazilian society. Defeated for the fourth consecutive time in the presidential election, the political parties representing the international capital and segments of the bourgeoisie and of the middle class, abandoned the rules of the democratic game to end the Workers' Party government cycle. They paved the way for the rise of neofascism.
Here at last is an exciting new edition of the Brazilian modernist epic Macunaíma: The Hero with No Character, by Mário de Andrade. This landmark 1928 novel follows the adventures of the shapeshifting Macunaíma and his brothers as they leave their Amazon home for a whirlwind tour of Brazil, cramming four centuries and a continental expanse into a single mythic plane. Having lost a magic amulet, the hero and his brothers journey to São Paulo to retrieve the talisman that has fallen into the hands of an Italo-Peruvian captain of industry (who is also a cannibal giant). Written over six delirious days-the fruit of years of study-Macunaíma magically synthesizes dialect, folklore, anthropology, mythology, flora, fauna, and pop culture to examine Brazilian identity. This brilliant translation by Katrina Dodson has been many years in the making and includes an extensive section of notes, providing essential context for this magnificent work.
This book investigates how non-state actors have become key drivers of the diffusion of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Brazil. It will be of interest to academics in the field of Sustainable Development, Latin America Studies and Environmental Politics.
"In a landscape worthy of Cormac McCarthy, the river runs septic with blood. Edgar Wilson makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of a cow, then stuns it with a mallet. He does this over and over again, as the stun operator at Senhor Milo's slaughterhouse: reliable, responsible, quietly dispatching cows and following orders, wherever that may take him. It's important to calm the cows, especially now that they seem so unsettled: they have begun to run in panic into walls and over cliffs. Bronco Gil, the foreman, thinks it's a jaguar or a wild boar. Edgar Wilson has other suspicions. But what is certain is that there is something in this desolate corner of Brazil driving men, and animals, to murder and madness."--
"This is the first English translation of the queer mulatto Brazilian modernist's humorous account of a three-month voyage to the Amazon that prompts him to rethink his ingrained Eurocentrism, explore Indigenous cultures, and struggle to put into words the grandeur of the now-endangered landscape"--
By focusing on quantitative and qualitative research in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, this book expands on the notion of "therapeutic culture."
"A narrator's journey to discover his true self and the outermost reaches of sexual and artistic expression"--
The I LOVE RIO book is based on the work of the ILOVERIO.COM portal, an ambitious project with the objective of making accurate and qualified information about Rio de Janeiro easily available globally, along with tens of thousands of unique and exclusive photographs. Defined by the media as the first city ever rebuilt on-line, I LOVE RIO provides over 25,000 pages of original content celebrating the history, culture and beauty of the city and state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. "Eu Amo Rio", meaning "I love Rio", is an important local expression and a key part of the Carioca culture, therefore the phrase 'I LOVE RIO' was chosen as the name and symbol of the project and translated in more than 50 languages, divulging internationally a message of love and pride for Rio de Janeiro. As a one-of-a-kind project, I LOVE RIO is designed to show the City and the State of Rio de Janeiro from unique historical, touristic and cultural perspectives. The portal offers innovative interpretations, beyond the traditionally available on-line information for visitors and users. The multi-level content was conceived to give a quick touristic reference, and to show how each characteristic of Rio de Janeiro developed, providing an explanation of how various parts of Rio de Janeiro affect the residents' lives, traditions, artistic and cultural productions. The I LOVE RIO portal garnered the institutional endorsement of over 40 Brazilian entities at the Municipal, State and Federal levels, making of the portal an institutionally-backed, but independent platform with an extraordinary global reach. On July 26th 2016, the portal was officially launched and presented to the world via an unforgettable and unprecedented ceremony when the I LOVE RIO symbol was projected on the iconic monument of Christ the Redeemer, formally adding the portal to the cultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro. This book offers a glimpse in some of the most important aspects of Rio de Janeiro, an overall introduction to one of the most fascinating and complex cities in the world. The book contains QR-codes, providing direct links to the latest on-line content for any given topic.
Have you ever wondered how to travel with your favorite pet in a huge tropical country where footloose foreigners are suspect?Author Ben Batchelder abandoned a cozy corporate career and, instead of returning to the U.S. like a normal re-pat, moved deep into the interior of Brazil. Here, he drives his two-wheel drive station wagon into the Amazon, on the notoriously dangerous Belém-Brasília highway, and back along Brazil's endless Atlantic Coast, on roads few if any Brazilians brave.
