This book historicises and analyses the increasing incidence of xenophobia and nativism in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It examines how xenophobia and nativism impact the political cohesion and social fabric of states and societies in the regions and offers solutions to aid policy formation and implementation. Rather than utilising an overarching framework, individual theory is applied to chapters to analyse the diverse connections between xenophobia and nativism in the regions. The book explores the economic, nationalistic, political, social, cultural, and psychological triggers for xenophobia and nativism and their impact on an increasingly interconnected and interrelated world. In addition to the individual and comparative examination of these triggers, the book outlines how they can be decreased or altered and argues that Pan-Africanism and the unity of purpose among diverse groups in the western hemisphere is still an ideal to which Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean can aspire. This book will be of interest to academics in the field of African history, African Studies, Caribbean and Latin American studies, cultural anthropology and comparative sociology.

This book synthesizes ecofeminist theory, American studies, and postcolonial theory to interrogate what New Americanist William V. Spanos articulates as the "errand into the wilderness": the ethic of Puritanical expansionism at the heart of the U.S. empire that moved westward under Manifest Destiny to colonize Native Americans, non-whites, women, and the land.The project explores how the legacy of the errand has been articulated by women writers, from the slave narrative to contemporary fiction. In The Intruders, Carlos Manuel Alvarez dives into the recent protest organized in Havana by the San Isidro Movement, which brought together more than two hundred Cuban artists, intellectuals, and activists. In November 2020, the island's regime imprisoned rapper Denis Solís, which led to a peaceful encampment, an unprecedented civic response that seems to have irreversibly changed the sentimental political map of the country. A mixture of reportage, testimony, profile and memory, the book portrays the lives of the participants in this event and also the author's intimate experience with the Cuban Stasi as part of the social turmoil shared by that dissident group. At the same time, it explores some very pertinent categories on the island: revolution, dictatorship, language and totalitarianism. Castroism is understood here not only as an expression of authoritarian power, but also as a habit, a culture, a doctrine that shapes emotionally and intellectually. "I want to believe that the book proposes an aesthetic of militancy at risk," said the author, while reflecting on the role of journalism, writing, and art.

From 1976 to 1979 the author was a forester for International Paper Company in northern Maine. He loves wild and remote places. He lives with his wife Carol in Sandy, Oregon. They love hiking, and volunteering to serve and teach the children in their church. Carrie grew up wanting to work at Walt Disney Studios as a background artist. She is inspired by a love of the world's nature, especially Oregon's, by Disney animation and classical music. Characterized by an internationally comparative scope this volume revolves around the following questions with a view to childhood constructions: What continuities but also changes are discernible? What political and ideological concepts are inherent in children's and young adult literature? How are World War II and the postwar period represented in children's books? What role do trauma and (post)memory play? And how is the discourse on flight and migration shaped?
