Matthias Leupold erinnert sich in seinen szenischen Fotografien an seine Ost-Berliner Kindheit und Jugend in den sechziger bis achtziger Jahren unter den Bedingungen der Diktatur in der DDR und stellt die Kamera »in den toten Winkel jener Epoche«, wie Karl Corino seine Arbeitsweise 1995 treffend beschrieb. Das Tragen von Uniformen - die der Pioniere, der Freien Deutschen Jugend, der paramili­tärischen Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik und schließlich der Nationalen Volksarmee - war für Leupolds Generation eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Die DDR-Nomenklatura versuchte durch die Kinder- und Jugendorganisationen sowie durch ständige Propaganda von Beginn an das Denken und Handeln ihrer jungen Bürger zu prägen. Der »Titel Aus dem Gruppenbuch der Christiane P.« spielt u.a. auf das Aufgehen des Indi­viduums in der Gruppe an. Wer sich nicht unterordnete, wurde vom System ausgespien: sei es die fallengelassene Goldmedaillengewinnerin oder sei es Matthias Leupold selbst, der 1982 wegen Nichtanzeige der Republikflucht eines Freundes in der Zentralen Untersuchungshaftanstalt des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit der DDR in Hohenschönhausen einsaß. The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC's armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the "Second" and "Third" worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.

This text consists of identifying literary elements with historical guidelines in eleven stories selected from three texts entitled Historia Secreta de Chile (Secret History of Chile) written by the Chilean Jorge Baradit. These narratives are framed in historical events that occurred in Chile between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. Such stories, with historical glimpses, make up the analysis, the purpose of which is to elucidate the author's narrative style and identify elements typical of literature. Consequently, the study is preceded by a review of the cultural-literary framework in which literary and artistic terms such as postmodernism, contemporary literature and historical fiction are examined in depth, considering theorists from the 20th century onwards. In addition, an approach has been made to the artistic and literary movement known as Freak Power, to which the author Jorge Baradit belongs. Finally, four axes of analysis have been determined: discursive reconstruction between person-fact-character, symbolism of fire, dehumanisation of the self and recusation of the dictator. These themes are transversal in the stories chosen for this analysis.

This work examines the CFE Treaty as a factor in Russia's foreign and security policy. Moscow showed amazing persistence in their relationship with the "cornerstone of European security." Their approach to the treaty was a genuine attempt to shape the security environment in Europe and the former USSR. The treaty also enabled the dismantling of large conventional forces as they returned from Eastern Europe and transitioned into the armies of the newly independent states of the former USSR. The CFE Treaty, though, proved ineffective at constraining the enlargement of NATO. Simultaneously, Moscow's foreign and security policy evolved from one that focused on the domestic development of the country to that of a more confident state reasserting itself as a great power. Drawing extensively on primary sources and analyses by Russian authors, this book employs two historical narratives, case studies, and a conceptual framework to show that while Moscow remained engaged with the CFE Treaty, undesired effects on Russia's national interests gradually accrued at the expense of desired ones, leading Vladimir Putin to withdraw Russia from the treaty as an act of de-coupling from the "collective West." This book is relevant to scholars and policymakers who want to understand Russia's approach to arms control as an element of military security.

In diesem Buch geht es um eine autobiographische Erzählung meiner Erlebnisse während meiner Dienstzeit bei den Grenztruppen der DDR. Ich wurde im März 1989 zu den Grenztruppen eingezogen und nach dem Fall der Mauer im Mai 1990 aus dem Dienst entlassen. Es erzählt die Geschichte eines Grenzdurchbruchs, vom Leben in der Kompanie und vom Alltag des Grenzdienstes. Und gibt einen Einblicke in eine Welt, die viele Bürger der ehemaligen DDR nie kennen gelernt haben. Es geht um das Leben der Soldaten und Unteroffiziere, die an der Grenze ihren Wehrdienst leisteten, mit allen Facetten des täglichen Wahnsinns des Systems.

Braunkohle war und ist ein problembehafteter Rohstoff. Dieser Befund gilt im Besonderen für die DDR, die von ihrer wichtigsten Energieressource in fataler Weise abhängig war. Viele der Umweltprobleme, die wir mit dem sozialistischen Staat verbinden, hatten ihren Ursprung in der Nutzung von Braunkohlen. Dabei versuchte die DDR lange Zeit, sich diesen Umweltproblemen zu stellen. Von einem determinierten "sozialistischen Ökozid" kann daher nicht die Rede sein. Der Autor zeichnet anhand der Rekultivierungsforschung und -praxis ausgekohlter Tagebaue nach, wie die DDR sich bereits ab den frühen 1950er-Jahren den Problemen stellte und Lösungen suchte. Die reich bebilderte Studie zeigt, wie bis in die 1970er-Jahre ein Wissenschaftsnetzwerk entstand, das seine Erkenntnisse auch systemübergreifend distribuierte. Dank dieser Forschungen war die DDR für einen historischen Moment eines der führenden Länder in der bergbaubedingten Umweltpolitik.

Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. The study uses Nkholongue as a microhistorical lens to examine such diverse topics as the slave trade, the spread of Islam, colonization, subsistence production, counter-insurgency, decolonization, civil war, ecotourism, and matriliny. Thereby, the book attempts to reflect as much as possible on the generalizability and (global) comparability of local findings by framing analyses in historiographical discussions that aim to go beyond the regional or national level. Although the chapters of the book deal with very different topics, they are united by a common interest in the social history of rural Africa in the longue durée. Contrary to persistent clichés of rural inertia in Africa, the book as a whole underscores the profound changeability of social conditions and relations in Nkholongue over the years and highlights how people's room for maneuver kept changing as a result of the Winds of History, the frequent and often violent ruptures brought to the village from outside.

Dank der Entscheidung von Stanislaw Petrow geht dieser Versuch weiter. Hoffentlich noch ein paar hunderttausend Jahre lang. Deshalb gehört die Nacht seiner Entscheidung in jedes Geschichtsbuch.

2014 war ein erstes Buch zu diesem Thema fertig geworden, seit 2020 ist es im Handel: "Geld und Preise in der DDR - Was bekamen wir für unser Geld?". Kein anderes Buch widmet sich so intensiv dem Thema Preise und der ganzen Breite der Ausgaben. Die Resonanz im Bekanntenkreis war sehr gut, alle steuerten Dokumente und Erinnerungsstücke bei. Also ging die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema weiter. Es wurde um neue Aspekte erweitert, um "Stipendium" und "Rente" als Einstieg in das Gebiet der Einkommen, ergänzt um Lohnstreifen, Lohnsteuern und SV-Beitrag. Außerdem wurde das Thema zeitlich nach "vorn" erweitert, um die Abschnitte zur Währungsreform 1948, zum Geldumtausch 1957, zu Wohnungsbau-Obligationen ab Ende der 1950er Jahre. Mit der ebenfalls behandelten Abschaffung der Lebensmittelkarten 1958 war auch eine umfassende Preisreform verbunden, viele der bis zum Ende der DDR gültigen Preise wurden damals festgelegt.Ein ebenfalls umfangreicher und sehr interessanter Abschnitt beschäftigt sich mit dem Hauskauf, dem dazu gehörigen Kredit und den notwendigen Handwerkerleistungen. Die zusammengestellten Handwerkerrechnungen machen den ungeheuren bürokratischen Aufwand deutlich, der mit dem Festhalten an konstanten Preisen für die Bevölkerung trotz steigender Material- und Personalkosten verbunden war. Der "rote Faden" wird im zweiten Teil durch das Thema "Preise" gebildet. Ein Ausweis der über lange Zeit konstant gehaltenen Preise sind die vielen heute noch vorhandenen Sachzeugen aus Kunststoff oder Metall mit "eingeprägtem" Preis. Mit vielen Dingen sind zusätzliche Erinnerungen verknüpft. Das betrifft beispielsweise Werbung / Propaganda auf Rechnungen oder das Ausfuhrverbot für hochwertige Konsumgüter. Oder einfach auch die Veränderung von Gepflogenheiten - kommt der Gasmann jeden Monat und kassiert den fälligen Beitrag oder werden Monatspauschalen vom Konto abgebucht?

This book aims to analyze the profiles of women built in the poetics of Chico Buarque, confronting myths and legends that projected the image of women over time, contributing to literary studies on the subject. Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, better known as Chico Buarque, is a musician, playwright and writer who became an icon in Brazilian culture, because when we talk about Brazilian popular music (MPB) in the decades of 1960 - 70 it is impossible not to make reference to Chico, due to his great contribution to the cultural scene of the country. Thus, the research aims to understand, through literary analysis, the meanings put in the songs of Chico Buarque, in which he thematizes the female figure, conflicting with the fact that the female is considered a social marginality, in various periods of history.

Die Studie untersucht erstmals systematisch Erich Kästners bislang nur marginal erforschte Rolle als Intellektueller nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Ausgehend von der Annahme der Intellektuellensoziologie, dass Reichweite und Wirkungschancen eines Intellektuellen maßgeblich von dem Prestige abhängen, das er in seinem eigentlichen Tätigkeitsbereich gewonnen hat, beleuchtet die Verfasserin zunächst die Nachkriegskarriere Kästners und seine unterschiedlichen Positionen im kulturellen Feld. Daran anknüpfend zeigt sie auf, wie Kästner den Einfluss und die Bekanntheit, die er als Schriftsteller, Journalist und PEN-Präsident erlangen konnte, nutze, um sich innerhalb (kultur-)politischer Diskurse öffentlich zu positionieren. Im Fokus steht dabei seine Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Schuldfrage, seine Kritik an personellen und mentalen Kontinuitäten des NS-Regimes und sein Einsatz für den Frieden. Durch die konsequente Berücksichtigung der historischen und diskursiven Kontexte seiner Stellungnahmen offeriert die Studie nicht nur neue Erkenntnisse für die Kästner-Forschung, sondern erweitert zugleich auch die literatur-, zeit- und intellektuellengeschichtliche Perspektive auf die unmittelbaren Nachkriegsjahre und die junge Bundesrepublik.

Indeed, the characters leave their homes and it is through this physical displacement that their communication with the outside world evolves.

Between Anti-Fascist Society, Socialist Utopia and Lived Jewishness: What did it mean to be Jewish in the GDR? As shown in the stories of the sixties, Moderato Cantabile, Ten and a half hours of the evening in summer, Hiroshima my love and The Ravishment of Lol V. Stein, the silence around which the texts are built, the mystery that surrounds the female characters and their feelings, are the sign of an "intimate" experience kept secret, internalized, never quite expressed. In these works, Duras tirelessly tries to penetrate the intimacy of the heroines by seeking to uncover and understand their experiences, this painful and personal history that remains buried. Duras will thus only write and rewrite the traumatic event lived by her heroines. The lack and the absence, omnipresent motives also associated with the female characters, turn out to echo an impossible mourning. While this process of rewriting is indicative of a quest for a solution, Duras seems far from having resolved the heroines' immemorial past, since absence, love and death are directly or indirectly linked to childhood, to the mother and to the death of the younger brother.

Das Buch analysiert die religiösen und politischen Faktoren der deutsch-französischen und der deutsch-polnischen Versöhnung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Dabei richtet es seinen Fokus auf katholische Bischöfe.Mit der vergleichenden Perspektive auf die beiden Versöhnungsprozesse geht diese Studie wichtigen Faktoren der europäischen Integration auf den Grund. Sie zeigt, dass die in der Europaforschung bis heute stark vertretene Tendenz, Ost- und Westeuropa als zwei voneinander getrennte Komplexe zu denken, nicht vorbehaltlos auf die Erfassung der Kontakte zwischen katholischen Bischöfen aus den beiden deutschen Staaten, Frankreich und Polen übertragen werden kann. Die Bedingungen des Kalten Krieges beeinflussten zwar die Versöhnungsbemühungen der Bischöfe, trotzdem bot gerade die übernationale Struktur der katholischen Kirche Möglichkeiten, Kontakte über die nationalen und politischen Barrieren hinweg zu unterhalten.Die Studie bietet schließlich eine bislang fehlende Synthese der beiden Versöhnungsprozesse im Zeitraum vom Kriegsende bis zur Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands.
