Daily Telegraph

On a long car journey to Norfolk, Little Jo's repetitive chant, 'We're going to the wide, flat land, the wide, flat land, the wide, flat land,' resonates through the car, much to her older brother's annoyance. Hailing from Surrey, the siblings have always been enchanted by the charm of East Anglia's countryside, their anticipation heightened by the nostalgic tales of their mother's own childhood holidays on the north-east coast. Upon arrival at their quaint holiday cottage, a chance encounter with a neighbour sets them on a path that will change their lives forever. The Pritchards are soon faced with the unsettling shadows of their mother's past. Through this unexpected journey, they learn the essence of overcoming, the grace of empathy, and the power of loving support in encouraging others. Amidst the expansive tranquillity of the wide, flat land, they discover a healing peace, a calming beauty, a secure haven, and a renewed hope for the future of their extended family.
When the fog clears one December morning in Essex, the body of a teenage girl is discovered lying face down in a field. The victim, Lily Monteith, was murdered in a peculiar and unique way - so unique that it could have only happened to her. As a result, the case quickly lands on DS Tomek Bowen's desk who, while trying to juggle his newfound life as a single parent to a thirteen-year-old daughter, must unearth the deadly sequence of events and bring the truth to light. But as soon as the investigation begins, Tomek discovers Lily's death may be linked to a killing spree that has lain dormant for many years - with no one ever being brought to justice for it. And, if that's the case, he fears another killing spree, this time years in the making, is yet to come.
Annabelle Lake thought she recognised the Ford Fiesta waiting outside her school, and the driver in it. She was wrong. Her body is discovered some time later, dangling from a swing in a local playground on Canvey Island. The post-mortem shows she's been fed, clothed and kept warm. That whoever was responsible had looked after her. But when another girl goes missing and is found in a similar fashion, that's where the similarities end. Both girls have never met, they don't know each other, and they're from completely different backgrounds. So what connects them? DS Tomek Bowen and the team at Essex Police must find out before it's too late. And on an island that's below sea level, it's only a matter of time until the truth comes flooding out.

"The seventeenth-century philosophers known as the Cambridge Platonists were recognised in their time as some of England's most influential and controversial philosophers. In this study, Samuel M. Kaldas explores the intellectual contributions of the group, which serve as the foundation for the modern field of philosophy of religion"--
Life in the 1950s and 60s sometimes appears to have been lived by people from another planet. Such is the difference in lifestyle between now and then. Computers, social media, and all the problems that come with living in the 21st century were a distant dream (or nightmare). Life was lived at a slower pace, and people had more time for one another. This is not to say that times couldn't be hard, and life certainly wasn't always a 'bed of roses'. Through it all, there was always a shoulder to lean on, or a nice cup of tea made by a friend or neighbour, who would listen patiently to your troubles or triumphs (counsellors extraordinaire!) There appeared to be no shortage of characters, and everyone had a tale to tell. 'A peck of dirt won't kill you,' was a well-used adage, and from childhood to old age, people were less fearful than today, thus allowing them to live their lives to the full. This book is about the people who lived through those times, their quirks and habits, their generosity and good humour. Humour plays a big part in this book, with a sprinkling of every other human emotion. The author sincerely hopes that young and old will enjoy looking back at a bygone time which was only 60 short years ago.

A detailed history of the town of Lowestoft, its society, economy, and topography.`A superbly researched study.... An excellent addition not only to the history of Suffolk but of early modern society and economy more generally.' Professor RICHARD SMITH, University of Cambridge. Lowestoft has grown from a small urban community to become Suffolk's second largest town; and this book provides a vivid picture of the town and its inhabitants during the early modern period. Making full use of surviving documentation, in particular the parish registers, it begins with an overview of Lowestoft's medieval history, then proceeds to investigate topographical development, demographic features, occupational structure, social geography, house-building and interior decor, wealth and inheritance, maritime pursuits, agriculture, local government, education and literacy, religious affiliation, and urban identity. Wherever possible, the town is set into a national and European context, and its maritime nature fully brought out. DAVID BUTCHER is a retired Lowestoft schoolteacher and lecturer in Local History topics for the Continuing Studies Dept. at the University of East Anglia.
