This book traces the complex pattern of working-class radical endeavour in the West Riding textile district during the years from 1829 to 1839. It focuses in particular on questions of local leadership and organisation and stresses the importance of these elements to early working-class movements. The study assesses the significance of the trade union, popular radical, early co-operative and factory reform agitations of the late 1820s and early 1830s in shaping leadership cadres and organisational structures. It goes on to map out the varied, often mutually reinforcing campaigns of the mid 1830s which came together in the early Chartist movement. Chartism, with its more confident, experienced and self-reliant local leadership and its stress on organisation, is shown to be the culmination of a decade of escalating conflict and prodigious activity. It drew on the radicalising experiences of the early 1830s, on the incremental growth of working-class disillusionment in the post-Reform era, and on the common experiences and uncertainties which large sections of the local working population shared. Whilst building on traditional ideas and agitational tactics, the early Chartists increasingly articulated an assertive, class-conscious alternative to the widely-perceived evils of unregulated competitive industry and unrepresentative, uncaring government. Far from being peripheral figures, the local leaders who emerged in this era were central to the story of the emergence of the world's first mass working-class movement. For this reason, the efforts of contemporaries to perpetuate their memory deserve to be continued, so that a few more at least, do not share the fate of the many who 'died unknown'.

This study examined the connection between chronotype and second language vocabulary acquisition. Using a quantitative method approach, it investigated how chronotype influences vocabulary learning outcomes. The study¿s sample size was 102. The Morningness- Eveningness Questionnaire was used to categorize the learners into either morning or evening types. The study further analyzed the data using inferential statistics, including independent samples t-tests, to compare vocabulary learning abilities between individuals with different chronotypes, and it also used the paired samples t-test to compare the means of each group in the morning and afternoon. The findings demonstrated significant differences in vocabulary learning based on chronotype, with morning types outperforming evening types. In addition, in the mornings, larks excel, and in the evenings, owls excel. Effect sizes indicate large and medium effects, highlighting the meaningfulness of the observed differences. This study recommends that language instructors should use this knowledge of chronotype to optimize second language vocabulary learning outcomes.

The Black Robe is an 1881 epistolary novel by famed English writer, Wilkie Collins. The book relates the misadventures of Lewis Romayne, and is also noted for a perceived anti-Catholic bias. As the story begins, Romayne and his friend, Major Hynd, are in Boulogne to visit Romayne's aunt, who is dying. While there, Romayne attends a card game, where he has an argument with a corrupt card sharp, the General, who challenges him to a duel. However, the general doesn't turn up himself but nominates his son, an accurate shot, who should win the duel. Romayne absolutely does not want to fight but is goaded into doing so. Against the odds, he accidentally kills his opponent, and the screams of the man's brother after the death come to haunt Romayne for the rest of his life.Romayne returns to his Yorkshire home, called Vange Abbey. Even in his own home, the Frenchman's younger brother's awful cries follow him. He finally leaves for London, to visit his old friend Lord Loring, who is the patriarch of a well-heeled Catholic family. While there, he meets Stella Eyrecourt, who falls in love with him. A Catholic priest named Father Benwell, who serves as a spiritual leader for the Lorings, determines that he will convert Romayne to the church, employing the services of young priest, Arthur Penrose, to this end. This is all done in an attempt to bring Romayne's family home, Vange, back to the church, who owned it before Romayne's family.Romayne, who is still haunted by the duel, sends Major Hynd to enquire about the family of the man he killed in hopes of assisting them monetarily. Additionally, he confides in Penrose who becomes a true friend to Romayne, despite his presumed ulterior motives.Father Benwell employs various tactics to undermine Romayne's marriage to Stella, finally culminating in the revelation of Stella's prior bigamous marriage to Bernard Winterfield. Winterfield had fallen in love with Stella and married her while erroneously believing that his wife from a previous marriage was dead.Eventually, Romayne is promoted to an ecclesiastical post in Paris. However, knowing that he is dying, Romayne finally decides to see Stella and his son. Father Benwell brings Romayne's lawyer to his deathbed, trying to confirm the validity of the will in an attempt to ensure the church inherits Vange. But as he dies, Romayne acknowledges he loves his wife and child, and has the will destroyed. This causes Vange-and the entire inheritance-to pass to his family, foiling Benwell's plans. Basil (1852) is the second novel written by British author Wilkie Collins, after Antonina. Basil, son of a father who values the family pedigree and who would not let him marry below his station, falls in love at first sight with a girl he sees on a bus. He follows her and discovers she is Margaret Sherwin, only daughter of a linen draper. He persuades her father to let him marry her secretly. He agrees on the condition, that, as his daughter is only seventeen, they live apart for the first year. At first the secret works, but then the mysterious Mannion, whose emotions cannot be read in his face, returns from abroad. On the last night of the year Basil follows Margaret and Mannion and discovers them in flagrante delicto. Basil attacks Mannion in the street and tries to murder him, but succeeds only in mutilating his face by pushing it into the fresh tarmacadam in the road. Mannion survives, recovers and swears revenge, and it is revealed that Basil's father indirectly caused Mannion's father to be hanged for forgery.Basil repudiates Margaret, but Sherwin threatens him with exposure unless he holds to his marriage. Basil confesses to his father, who disowns him, but his sister Clara stands by him. Basil's brother Ralph undertakes to buy Sherwin off, but meanwhile Margaret flees to Mannion, thereby acknowledging her guilt. Visiting Mannion in hospital, she catches typhus and dies. Basil, having been put on her track by Ralph, visits her on her deathbed.Basil flees from Mannion to Cornwall. The dénouement is worthy of Conan Doyle, set among whirlpools and cliffs near Lands End. n her introduction (Oxford World's Classics Edition), Dorothy Goldman applies psychoanalytic theories to argue that Basil and Mannion, Margaret and Clara, are each like opposite halves of the same person. A further doublet is between the active Ralph and the passive Basil, as the former notes in his dialogue. Mrs Sherwin, Margaret's mother, is apparently feeble-minded and as such is the precursor of Sarah Leeson (The Dead Secret), Mrs Wragge (No Name) and other of Collins' deranged woman characters - though she is astute enough to suspect Margaret and Mannion's guilty secret. One criticism of the book's plot is that it is highly coincidental that Mannion's father lost his life as a consequence of actions set in motion by Basil's father. The fact that the very woman Basil randomly follows is so closely connected to Basil, via Mannion, despite being a total stranger, can be considered to be a plot flaw. (wikipedia.org)
This book aims to investigate how the issue of body politics works in Han Kang¿s The Vegetarian. The body of the Protagonist, Yeong-hye, is a vital focus in the triptych narrative, where Kang tries to portray the adversities of Yeong-hye due to her strong vow for vegetarianism. Her butchery dream changes her into vegetarianism that is solely different from the rest because, in the beginning, she prefers to eat only green vegetables but slowly and gradually, she stops eating anything. It is because she wants to transform herself into a tree. The people around her stand as obstacle to preclude her from achieving her desire. When her body does not fulfil the demands of others and resists traditional norms then conflict occurs in the plot. The extremity of her zeal, against which the society is standing, forces Mr. Cheong to give divorce to Yeong-hye, allows her sister¿s husband to rape her, compels family to abandon her and finally to get admitted in a psychiatric hospital. Depending on the issues of female body and its politics, societal laws and regulations and power over sex, this research paper explores how a female body is subjugated to these societal conventions.
Kit Marlowe: playwright, poet, lover. In the plague-stricken streets of Elizabethan England, Kit flirts with danger, leaving a trail of enemies and old flames in his wake. His plays are a roaring success; he seems destined for greatness. But the queen's eyes are everywhere and the air is laced with paranoia. When Marlowe is arrested on charges of treason, heresy and sodomy - all of which are punishable by death - he is released on bail with the help of Thomas Walsingham, a man he presumes to be his friend, but who has in fact hired the infamous assassin Robin Poley to take care of Marlowe, fearing his own sins may come to light. Now, with the queen's spies, the vengeful Baines, and the double-crossing Poley closing in, Marlowe's last friend in the world is Ingram Frizer, a total stranger who is obsessed with his plays, and who will, within ten days' time, become first Marlowe's lover, and then his killer.Richly atmospheric, emotionally devastating and heartrendingly imagined, Lightborne is a tender, thrilling tale of one of our most famous playwrights, and a love that flourishes within the margins.
The present study investigates the effect of treatment with five (05) metacognitive strategies namely problem solving, planning and evaluation, mental translation, personal knowledge and direct attention on EFL students¿ listening comprehension achievement. In this regard, a longitudinal mixed methods case study was carried out involving one hundred (100) informants belonging to first and second years LMD. The researcher made use of a combination of research instruments to collect data such as two written tests (a pre-test and a post test); retrospective interviews, think-aloud protocols, a Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) as well as learners¿ diaries. Listening metacognitive strategy instruction proved to be efficient as it helped in increasing students¿ motivation, self-confidence and autonomy.

This study investigates the effects of negotiation of meaning instances emerging from task-based synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) on second language (L2) vocabulary acquisition. Results based on the chat logs produced by 20 English as a Second Language (ESL) learners collaborating on an information gap task suggest the facilitative benefits of synchronous CMC tasks for the negotiated interaction between L2 learners. Despite the split nature of negotiated interaction in the SCMC environment, most of the L2 learners were able to go through the negotiation of meaning routines documented in the face-to-face literature to work out the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. Additionally, their online discussion of lexical problems encountered to a large extent promoted their comprehension and retention of the target vocabulary. These findings provide compelling evidence for the potential of SCMC as an interactive platform for L2 learners to communicate in meaningful contexts, receive feedback from peers and teacher, and improve their interlanguage.
The analysis of grammar, manuals, dictionaries and different types of materials for language teaching is one of the most neglected aspects among researchers, especially if they are old works. However, the study, contrast and understanding of these works is fundamental to understand and fully appreciate the evolution and achievements obtained in this field, especially since the 70s of the last century. The work presented here attempts to alleviate, in part, this gap. This volume deals with the complex world of English teaching in Spain before it became a lingua franca and almost the only means of disseminating scientific and academic advances.
Kristeligt Dagblad
