In Cross-Training, author and poet Dennis Marden Clark has the audacity to imagine the life of Jesus of Nazareth during the period between his time in the temple listening to and amazing the elders, the "bearded ones," and the start of his ministry, usually pegged either to his baptism by John the Baptist, or to his turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. This is unexplored territory, although not neglected by the bearded ones. It is all the more inviting for the silence with which they have greeted it. Clark has managed to write this opus in four-stress alliterative verse, modified by the demands of contemporary English, but all the better for his wrestling with the form. Clark has let his imagination have free reign, from having the young Jesus learn how to build a boat, for which he pays Saul of Tarsus a princely fee to make a sail, to learning how to sail against the wind and the current, with practice runs up the Nile, before setting off for Tarshish, then Tzór, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, then Belerion and Aberfala, and finally sailing towards a fire in the night sky, headed for the site of the Garden of Eden. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains (rub¿¿iy¿t) attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia".¿¿FitzGerald's work has been published in several hundred editions and has inspired similar translation efforts in English, Hindi and in many other languages.Manoranjan Pattanayak's translation in Odia would provide a pleasant reading to the Odia poetry lovers.

Steven L. Getz only entered one poetry contest in my life, and he won it. That poem, written in Middle School, is now lost to history. Fifty years later, he composed his next two poems entitled, "The Colored Lens of life," and "My Three-Man Chorus." Several others followed in quick succession. Sometimes, he composes several poems in a day. Other times, he goes months without composing because he gets preoccupied with other things. Steven rarely creates rambling semi-abstract poems (especially odes) because he considers most of them to be boring. How many poems that lasted more than two pages have you actually read all the way through? Truly popular poems are ageless. Poems such as "First Fig" by Edna St Vincent Millay, "Fog" by Carl Sandburg, and "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, as well as "Things I didn't Say" by Shel Silverstein basically prove this. Those one-page poems talk about the 'always' of life and nature not the 'present' that tends to prejudice our views. More importantly, great poems talk about human nature, even though their depiction of human nature is sometimes somewhat cryptic. Steven rarely runs out of words or ideas because he writes about life, which is ever-changing.

The anthology Blended Voices: Blending the Voices of Virginia began as a Poetry Society of Virginia (PSV) workshop I designed during the PSV Centennial year (2023). The Centennial theme was to celebrate the diverse voices of Virginia poets. I conceived of the idea of highlighting historic Virginia poets from diverse backgrounds, with the aim of blending their voices with those of diverse contemporary Virginia poets. The second goal was to educate participants about historic Virginia poets as they prepared to blend their voices with those of the historic poets.We had a small, enthusiastic group of participants for the workshop I ran in Richmond, Virginia, on May 6th, 2023, during the PSV Centennial Festival. The format of the workshop was slightly different from that of this book. In the workshop, participants picked poetry lines at random from four color-coded bins, one for each historic Virginia poet. The lines had been excised from two different poems by each historic Virginia poet: Edgar Allan Poe, Ruby Altizer Roberts, Anne Spencer, and Karenne Wood. Together, these authors represent several of Virginia's demographics: Caucasian male (Poe), Caucasian female (Roberts), African-American female (Spencer), and Native-American (Monacan) female (Wood). The workshop participants then created their own poems, using the four lines they had randomly chosen from the work of these historic poets. I presented a second workshop via Zoom to another set of participants.For the book, I decided to extend the challenge to all Poetry Society of Virginia members. Since the contributors would be working remotely, they were presented the same two poems from each of the four historic poets-a total of eight-and invited to choose one line from one poem by each poet. From these lines, or woven around these lines, they each created a novel poem, thus adding their voices to those of the historic poets.As the reader will find, the result is a joyful selection of widely different poetic contents and styles. Most of the historic poems are reprinted in the beginning of the book, so the reader can understand the original intent and experience the historic poets' voices before they are blended with voices from contemporary Virginia poets.Sofia M.
