This book is the first nearly complete (poetry and verse omitted) translation of the only known personal manuscript notes of a Sixteenth Century Commedia dell'Arte performer. This is a very important work for anyone interested in what such actors said and did in their improvised performances. Included with the literal translation are the detailed play outlines from the twenty plays in these manuscripts. In the original the outlines are terse and ambiguous, making them difficult to perform, but this book provides versions of each of them that have been resolved into clear entrances, exits, motivations and actions for every scene. Scholars get their literal translations. Performers get playable plays, as well as examples of prologues, monologues and one-liners that this Sixteenth Century actor thought were worthy to write down.

Hill Towns of Italy, first published in 1963, is a close look at a number of Italy's picturesque hill towns and villages. More than just a travel guide, author Lucy Notestein discusses each region's art, architecture, history, culture, cuisine, and more. Indexed, and illustrated throughout by pen-and-ink sketches. From the Preface: "The essence of travel is discovery. It is a personal adventure in curiosity. This book is but an introduction to Italian hill towns. There are hundreds of other hill towns worth exploring, and it is my hope that the reader of this book will be inspired to set out for himself to see what is on many a hilltop and on the other side, in the Pistoian Alps, for instance, or to the east of Florence by Poppi, in much of the Marches, in the Abruzzi, in Latium, in Calabria, Apulia, and Sicily. Italy is inexhaustible. There are ancient peoples with whom to get acquainted, personages of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, painting, sculpture, architecture, regional customs, and always views."
This book is a fascinating introduction to Italian cooking. It contains an illustrated reference guide, with information about all the common and less well-known Italian ingredients. Each section includes facts about how and where the ingredient is made or grown, its history and culinary uses, and essential information on buying and storing, along with detailed cooking and preparation instructions and basic recipes where appropriate. The recipe section has over 320 regional and contemporary recipes.

«This comprehensive, insightful and well-researched work is an essential and timely contribution to sustaining the training of healthcare interpreters. It provides an important foundation for trainers, researchers and practitioners, based on a thorough and up-to-date reflection on the challenges and needs of healthcare interpreting today, and on the development of training materials for interpreter trainers carried out by the European project ReACTMe. It is a rich, powerful, compelling and much needed book in the field of healthcare interpreting studies.»(Dora Sales, Senior Lecturer, Department of Translation and Communication, Jaume I University, Spain)«This volume breaks new ground by examining health inequities through a pedagogical and justice-oriented lens in the context of healthcare interpreting in Spain, Italy and Romania. By foregrounding specialized training that targets both emerging interpreters as well as trainers, the authors offer a fresh look at teaching and learning for healthcare interpreters by offering authentic, creative resources that can be adapted for any national context.»(Melissa Wallace, Associate Professor of Translation and Interpreting Studies and Director of the Graduate Certificate in Translation & Interpreting Studies, University of Texas at San Antonio, USA)Medical Interpreting: Training the Professionals presents the results of the project Research & Action and Training in Medical Interpreting (ReACTMe) funded by the European Commission, which analysed the interpreting services offered in healthcare settings in Spain, Italy and Romania. This edited collection provides the reader not only with an update on the current situation regarding medical interpreting from different perspectives (decision makers, trainers, professional interpreters, healthcare providers and patients) but also with training resources and a proposal for an academic programme to teach medical interpreters. It is therefore ideal reading for medical interpreting trainers, researchers and practitioners. The book is also of interest to healthcare professionals as it includes a decalogue on how to work with interpreters in five languages.

A stunning intergenerational mystery set in Italy, full of intrigue, betrayal, and murder. The silky marigold chemise seems to have a mind of its own. Whoever wears it ends up having prophetic dreams and is incapable of parting with it. In the early seventeenth century, sixteen-year-old Lucida secretly poses in the garment for a series of sensuous paintings, done by her best friend Alessia. Her talented friend longs for recognition, but women are not considered serious artists at the time. The paintings can never see the light of day. Lucida and Alessia's families would be dishonored by the impropriety of the chemise and Lucida's poses, as well as the female artist behind them. However, the paintings are so good, and would set up Alessia's family for years, that her father sells them anonymously. They wind up in the studies of wealthy Italian businessmen in Roma, one of whom is the father of Lucida's arranged new suitor, Niccolo, though Lucida is under the chemise's spell and cannot part with it even then. The garment and the paintings travel through generations of Italian families all the way through present day, following the headstrong women of the Bianchi, Galvani, and Orazio families through Rome, Florence, New York, and finally Corsica. As the luxurious marigold lingerie passes from woman to woman, arousing greed, deception, and secrecy, the women and their families must find a way to persevere and stay together.

Here for the first time is the single-volume edition of Singleton's celebrated translation. This beautifully illustrated book brings together all three volumes of Dante's poem, describing his travels down to the circles of Hell, up over the mountain of Purgatory, and his ultimate ascension through the celestial spheres of Paradise. Dante's divine tour provides a timeless allegory for the journey of one's soul toward union with God.Featuring an incisive introduction by Simone Marchesi, a glossary, and stunning illustrations by acclaimed artist Roberto Abbiati, this handsome edition of The Divine Comedy introduces a new generation of readers to what is perhaps the preeminent achievement of Italian literature"--
