How did the syncretism of Shintö and Buddhism beliefs regarding ancestor worship come to be? What are the differences in imperial ancestor rites between 1901 and now? Did imperial ancestor veneration increase after the Meiji Restoration and, if so, to what extent? 1s Japanese ancestor worship and its rites 'tradition' or rather 'invented tradition'?Ancestor worship is a unique belief system that can affect various aspects of life. Whether one believes in the afterlife or reincarnation, in fate or karma or even in creating one's own destiny, the belief in past family members or respected individuals of past times can be bent and mended to one's own needs and circumstances. Maybe it is the memory of their lives and the love they granted their descendants, maybe it is the respect and admiration for the lives and achievements they left behind or maybe less positive reasonings lead people to venerate their dead, for example wanting to appease malicious souls that might influence their descendant's lives negatively. Some might say these differences are dependent on the region or religion. The author would argue that it is dependent on families or even individuals. But surely, general tendencies can be identified in different regions and religions of the world. While ancestor worship might have some religious aspects at its' core, one cannot argue, that it is not also a socially and culturally influenced belief system. There might be people that still visit their parents' graves, even though they are not religious or don't believe in a higher power. Likewise, there might be some that identify as very religious, and still do not venerate their ancestors.

The purpose of this translation of Collado's Ars Grammaticae Iaponicae Linguae of 1632 is to make more readily available to the scholarly community an annotated version of this significant document in the history of both Japanese language study and grammatical description in general. Collado's work, derived in all its significant features from the Arte da lingoa de Iapam completed in 1608 by João Rodriguez, is in a strict, scholarly sense less valuable than its precursor. However, if used with the Arte as a simplified restatement of the basic structure of the language, Collado's Grammar offers to the student of the Japanese language an invaluable ancillary tool for the study of the colloquial language of the early 17th Century. While less extensive and less carefully edited than the Arte, Collado's Grammar has much to recommend it as a document in the history of grammatical description. It is an orthodox description attempting to fit simple Japanese sentences into the framework established for Latin by the great Spanish humanist Antonio Lebrija. Thus, as an application of pre-Cartecian grammatical theory to the structure of a non-Indo-European language, the Ars Grammaticae is an important document worthy of careful examination by those wishing insight into the origins of what three centuries later was to become the purview of descriptive linguistics. The present translation was begun with the able assistance of Ms. Roberta Galli whose contribution to my understanding of the Latin text is most gratefully acknowledged. For his continued encouragement in this undertaking I am grateful to Professor Roy Andrew Miller. This collection focuses on metaphorical as well as temporal and physical border-crossing in writing from and about Japan.With a strong consciousness of gender and socio-historic contexts, contributors to the book adopt an intercultural and interdisciplinary approach to examine the writing of authors whose works break free from the confines of hegemonic Japanese literary endeavour. By demonstrating how the texts analysed step outside the space of 'Japan', they accordingly foreground the volatility of textual expression related to that space. The authors discussed include Takahashi Mutsuo and Nagai Kaf¿, both of whom take literary inspiration from geographical sites outside Japan. Several chapters examine the work of exemplary border-crossing poet, novelist and essayist, It¿ Hiromi. There are discussions of the work of Tawada Y¿ko whose ability to publish in German and Japanese marks her also as a representative writer of border-crossing texts. Two chapters address works by Murakami Haruki who, although clearly affiliating with western cultural form, is rarely discussed in specific border-crossing terms. The chapter on Ainu narratives invokes topics such as translation, indigeneity and myth, while an analysis of Japanese prisoner-of-war narratives notes the language and border-crossing nexus.A vital collection for scholars and students of Japanese literature.

This book is based on our belief that the most enjoyable and efficient way to learn to read in Japanese is to dive in and start reading almost immediately, learning new kanji with the help of memory aides as you go. In order to make this approach workable, we introduce new kanji at the beginning of each chapter and then ask you to take a quick pre-test on theirpronunciations before you start to read. The practice reading material in each chapter includes only kanji characters that you know or are in the process of learning, and we provide immediate feedback about your reading accuracy in the form of same-page romaji equivalents and translations. The book is designed for students who are at least somewhat familiar with the 1,528 kanji that were introduced in Learn to Read in Japanese, Volumes I, II and III. Like the first three books, this volume includes at least three practice sentences for each new kanji, for a total of 912 sentences. We introduce 8 new kanji in each chapter of the book, and we group the new kanji by chapter in the Core Kanji catalogue, which is sold separately, so that it is convenient to study them in groups of eight before starting a new lesson. If you want to learn to read in Japanese, it's best to make an effort early on to become at least somewhat familiar with all of the kanji that are most frequently used by Japanese people, which we call the "core kanji." Once you have developed a basic acquaintance with those characters, you can turn your attention to reading practice, which will naturally strengthen your knowledge of the kanji. Our goal is to help students to achieve basic Japanese reading fluency as efficiently as possible, and to that end we have produced four other volumes titled Learn to Read in Japanese, A Japanese Reader, in which we attempt to demystify and systematize the kanji-learning process and where we provide a large number of memory aids, as described below.This book is a companion to those four Japanese Readers, and it functions as an efficient tool for the memorization and retrieval of 2,088 core kanji. It lists the characters that we believe you need to know, together with the basic information required to get started reading. For each kanji, this information consists of 1) The pronunciations that you are likely to encounter for each character; 2) The meanings of the character;3) One or more sample Japanese words for each of the character's possible pronunciations;4) A memorable description of the character, to help you to recognize it more easily in the future; such descriptions often focus on differences between the current kanji and other similar ones;5) A brief sentence that contains retrieval cues (or mnemonics) for each of the character's possible pronunciations; 6) Comparisons between the character and other similar kanji; and7) Kanji groups, in which kanji with similar traits are assembled.The book includes all of the files that you will need to learn to use Kanji ID, our innovative technique for identifying kanji that you encounter in your reading. These files include a kanji catalogue listing 2,088 kanji as described above, instructions for using Kanji ID, a Kanji Table to use for practice as you learn Kanji ID, a Kanji Group Index listing kanji groups, and a Kanji Trait Index in which you can look up characteristic traits for individual kanji that you encounter.Long before you have become fully acquainted with all of the core kanji, you should begin to read Japanese text that is keyed to your level of knowledge.
